Charlotte Bronte's works are all about the struggle of an individual consciousness towards self-realization，about some lonely and neglected young women with a fierce longing for love, understanding and a full，happy life. In her mind, man’s life is composed of perpetual battle between sin and virtue, good and evil. Besides，she is a writer of realism combined with romanticism.”(From Wikipedia)II.main content of “Jane Eyre”This story is set in England in the 19th century. It starts with the ill-treatment that the heroine Jane Eyre gets in her aunt’s family and her rebellious actions towards it. The story goes on with her experience in a cruel and inhumane charitable institution “Lowood”, where she suffers from coldness and starvation and witnesses death, but luckily gains knowledge. After eight years’ training in Lowood, six as a student and two as a teacher, Jane leaves Lowood and seeks a position as a governess in Thornfield. It is in Thornfield that she meets her future husband, Edward Rochester, but on their wedding day Edward is proved to be a married man. In facing this situation, Jane leaves Edward. But later, when Edward’s wife dies and Edward is disabled, Jane returns to Edward and takes the responsibility to look after him. In the end, they get married and live a happy life.III．Analysis of the novel1）characters of protagonistsJane Eyre:“an orphan child with a fiery spirit and a longing to love and be loved，a poor，plain，little governess who dares to love her master，a man superior to her in many ways，and even is brave enough to declare to the man her love for him”. It is said that Jane Eyre is an autobiography of Charlotte Bronte. This is one of the main features of Charlotte Bronte’s novel: characters and plots both are closely related to her own life. This kind of female lyric style has great influence on later writer writing, therefore, people regarded charlotte’s work as "the modern women fiction's classic".Edward Fairfax Rochester:“The master of Thornfield Manor. A Byronic hero, he is tricked into making an unfortunate first marriage to Bertha Mason many years before he meets Jane, with whom he falls madly in love. Mr. Rochester had huge wealth, but was hurt by his father andbrothers.”He was that kind of gloomy and cold image, but in reality he was full of tenderness and kindness. From his love to Jane Eyre, he was an infatuated man and completely dismissed the view of the difference of the rich and the poor. At the same time, he had independent personality and was not willing to share his secrets with Jane. From going to marry Miss Ingram and dressed up as a witch these two kinds of things to see, he was also a dramatic man. Jane Eyre and Edward Fairfax Rochester: In this novel, Jane Eyre is depicted as a woman rebelling against convention. This can be clearly seen in her relationship with Edward Rochester. When she finds that she has fallen in love with Edward, a man at her father’s age, she bravely expresses her love rather than cowers back, not letting age become the barrier of love. She sticks to the belief that beauty is indispensable in forming a perfect lady. As a woman, she regards legal marriage status the precondition in the combination of a man and a woman. When Rochester was blind and lost his big house Jane immediately came to his help and comforted him. Her love was generous and pure, like the spring sun reviving the desert in Rochester’s heart. Money is just an additional bonus of life. It is a tool, a means but never the main tune of life. Only love can be the reason of life. Only love can heal the broken hearts and carry the desperate ones through the gloomy days. That’s why they get together at last.B. Jane Eyre and St. John Eyre Rivers:For Jane, St. John Eyre Rivers is her life saver. In the moor house, she submits herself to St. John, a devotional God admirer, doing many harsh tasks and trying her best to meet his requirements, though these are not favorable to her. After St. John proposes to Jane several times, Jane is bewildered. She asks a favor from God. If s he didn't hear Edward’s call, most probably she would follow St. John to fulfill God’s mission as long as life endures if God directs her to do so.C. Edward Fairfax Rochester and Blanche Ingram：Blanche Ingram was a socialite whom Mr. Rochester temporarily courts in order to make Jane jealous. She had no emotions and displayed callous behavior and avaricious intent. There were no degree of love between Edward Fairfax Rochester and Blanche Ingram, though they were equivalent family background.3) Writing style——beautiful sentencesDelicate and charming sentences could be found everywhere in this novel. Following are listed: “My spirit can address yours, as if both have passed through the grave and stood before heaven equal.”“Life is too short, can not be used vengeful build hate.”“Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little I am soulless and heartless? Y ou think wrong!-I have as much soul as you-and full as much heart!”“I had not intended to love him; the reader knows I had wrought hard to extirpate from my soul the germs of love there detected; and now, at the first renewed view of him, they spontaneously arrived, green and strong! He made me love him without looking at me.”IV. The theme of the novelThere were various opinions about the theme of “Jane Eyre”, and approximately concluded to these: Morality, God and religion, Social class, Gender relations, Love and passion, Feminism, family and so on. Here I will provide my comments on two of them——real beauty, and true love.In the actual fact, Jane Eyre cannot be regarded as a beauty, even she knows that, and of course, the ordinary appearance make others had bad opinions on her, even she was easy to be looked down upon and teased, but she was totally much more than “the plain and ugly tutor”. “Although God did not grant her a beauty and wealth person, instead, God gave her a kind mind and a thoughtful brain. Her idea of equality and self-respect impresses us extremely much and makes us feel the power inside her small body.”Now I get a better understanding of what real beauty is, as we are all human-beings, so we should distinguish whether a man is noble or vulgar.Second topic is about true love. Jane Eyre lived in the lower classes of British society with kind-hearted, however, still is a rebellious woman. Even though she had mental and physical torture in her aunt’s home, or had bad treatment in the orphanage, she can vigorously struggle. What an audacious and independent female she is! At the same time, she says that real happiness is a spiritual world and noble and pure mind. Thus, abandoned secular marriage bondage, she accepts her boss’s love and prepare to live with him. However, something unexpected may happen any time. He has married. The desperate Jane left him and accidentally found her cousins and inherited her uncle’s legacy. She shared the money with her cousins. When she found out her love, Mr. Rochester, was blind, she decisively went back to him. Charlotte successfully created the first female image who dares to struggle, to fight for liberty and equality, to pursuit love, and take an independent positive attitude to life.V. the ending of Jane EyreAlthough at last Rochester's supple body like goshawk had defects, and his daily life had to rely on Jane, but I think most of time, he should be very happy. No one states goshawk must ever soar in the sky, looking down on creational ways so lofty, because that's too tired. Similarly, Jane has also been aware of the gap between Rochester with her for a long time, but she does not care. She never feels low self-esteem because of her own bad origin, and she always do a reasonable manner in dealings with Rochester, and adhere to the principle. She believes all humans in the presence of God in the face of love are equal. At the same time, this light of wisdom has been felt by sensitive Rochester, which is difficult to ignore. Be careless with status difference, age difference, only cared about the soul of communication，the two people loved each other with vigor and vitality, and no one could deny that their love wasn’t the most pure and beautiful. When she refused to marry him from John, she was also aware of her own soul had lost in Rochester, and everything happened before with Rochester is always so clear in the heart and heavier with the passage of time. My view of this novelThe novel shows to us is the one kind of simplifying, a phenomenon back to nature, and a feeling which is pursuit to devote fully without taking into account the feelings of the pros and cons. It is like a glass of ice water, which purifies readers' mind, and the pursuit to life. Jane’s belief and action deeply impresses readers’ heart s. Jane Eyre is a woman who has rational knowledge and who has firm commitment to her own happiness and who no longer blindly follows men and secular requirements for females. Her own value and emotion makes her a strong independent woman. Charlotte Bronte created an unprecedented female image that pursues equality and independence. That’s why I choose the book “Jane Eyre”, because I think her story makes me think about life and I learn much from her experience with a fresh new recognition of real beauty and true love.。
