阅读理解A(2017·安徽黄山二次质检)When I was young, I wished for a good car and a big house. That was my idea of success. I took all the advanced classes and tried to do well in the exams with my mind set on going to a key school. I just knew that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford the car and the dream house. All the way through junior years, my mind was planning this beautiful future. Then in the eleventh grade, many losses changed my mind. First, one of my friends di ed at 16. Soon after, my greatgrandmother passed away, followed by my beloved fourthgrade teacher. These events left me not knowing what to do or where to go. Death had never touched me so closely. After a long period of emptiness, it finally struck me: Life is not promised and neither is future success. Though I was attempting to achieve material success, I was not enjoying my daily life. I realized that finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with me forever and that is real success.Enjoying life's precious quirks (偶发事件) makes an ordinary person more successful than a wealthy person who isn't content and takes everything for granted. The summer before senior years, my attitude changed greatly. Instead of memorizing facts, I began learning skills. Instead of focusing on the future, I focused on today and many blessings and successes that came with it.I still get excellent grades, but now I devote weeks to studying instead of struggling for exams, and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. For me, being successful means truly living life each day.

B(2017·湖南衡阳第二次联考)For visitors, Teller Lake in Colorado looks like a fishbowl filled with thousands of gorgeous goldfish. However, to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department they are a group of dangerous species that could end up destroying the lake's ecosystem. The problem is that these fish aren't native to the lake, which means they have no predators (捕食者). This allows them to multiply in large numbers. Park officials believe that most of them are a result of a few unwanted pet goldfish that were thrown into the lake. While that may appear to be a kind thing to do, it is extremely dangerous, not to mention illegal. That's because as this nonnative species grow in numbers, they compete with the existing fish for food sources like small insects. Given that there is only a limited supply of resources, this could result in the goldfish overpowering the native fish species. In the case of Teller Lake, the officials are particularly worried that the goldfish will move downstream and affect the population of some of the endangered native species that live there. Another major cause for concern is the diseases the goldfish may be carrying. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologists, therefore, have no option but to removethe fish from the lake in the most efficient manner. The fish will then be fed to injured birds like eagles and osprey.Experts say that most owners believe they are doing the “right thing” by returning their pet to the wilderness. However, saving one pet often results in destroying the area's ecosystem and hurting other animals. According to experts, the best way to dispose_of unwanted fish or any other animal is to get advice from the people that sold the pet.

A less well-known benefit of having great EQ is that it can help in effective stress management,or in other words,to bring our stress to a comfortable level. But how can Emotional Intelligence help in stress management? Our emotions are good indicators of our stress level. If we are aware of our own emotions,we can identify the signs of unusually high stress earlier. Then we can take steps to relax or to control our emotions, and avoid further stress. For example, getting angry ten times in one single day at our team members, peers,or other people we interact with is most likely not a sign that they have suddenly become more annoying or incapable. It is more likely to be a sign that our level of stress has increased, and that our tolerance for anything that doesn’t go our way has decreased.Self-management,the second dimension of Emotional Intelligence, also helps decrease our stress.Self-management is our ability to prevent the waves of our negative emotions from rising too high.An example of self-management is keeping our sadness or anger from reaching an intensity when we cannot function and work normally, and when it can even be painful.Such high emotional wave further escalates stress in two ways.First, stress is expanded by the feeling that we are “losing control”.And then it can be accompanied by guilt...and even more stress.Secondly, decisions we make during these emotional waves are usually not well-thought and usually bring us more trouble and more stress. For example, decisions we make during a period of anger can be expected to result in extra work to repair “additional damages”.Social awareness, the third dimension of Emotional Intelligence decreases stress by reducing interpersonal conflicts in the workplace. One serious conflict with one of our team members or peers can eat up a large amount of our energy and result in a lot of stress. How exactly does better social awareness lead to less conflicts?Social awarenessis the ability to recognize emotions in other people, and to handle them resourcefully. In situations when conflicts can easily arise, this skill is particularly useful.By identifying the emotions in our counterpart and then acknowledging these emotions,we can prevent a disagreement from turning into an open personal conflict. As a conclusion,if you are feeling that you are too stressed,I encourage you to look at how you could develop your Emotional Intelligence further.1.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “escalates” in Paragraph 4?A.Decreases.

environment,” Buckminster Fuller said,“Pollution is nothing but the resources(资源)we are not harvesting. We allow them to be left around because we’ve been ignorant of their value.” To take one example, let’s compare the throwaway economy(经济)with a recycling economy as we feed a cat for life.Say your cat weighs 5kg and eats one can of food each day. Each empty can of its food weighs 40g.In a throwaway economy, you would throw away 5,475 cans over the cat’s 15-year lifetime. That’s 219kg of steel—more than a fifth of a ton and more than 40 times the cat’s weight. In a recycling economy,we would make one set of 100 cans to start with, then replace them over and over again with recycled cans.Since almost 3% of the metal is lost during reprocessing,we’d have to make an extra 10 cans each
