ASome places in the world have strange laws. It’s important for you to know about them before going there.Whoever likes to chew gum (口香糖) may have to leave Singapore. The government really wants to keep the city clean and will fine you for chewing gum. Before you leave for the United Arab Emirates you’d better make sure you aren’t visiting during Ramadan (斋月). During that time you aren’t allowed toeat or drink in public. Tourists have been fined up to $275 for drinking in public.Lovers spend so much time kissing each other goodbye at train stations that trains often start late. This law—no kissing your lover goodbye at train stations---is rather old, and isn’t in use today in France. In Thailand it’s against the law to drive a car or motorcycle without a shirt on, no matter how hot it is. Punishments are different in different areas and can include warnings and tickets costing about $10. No joke—the localpolice will stop you.Studies in Denmark have shown that cars with their headlights on are more noticeable by other drivers than those with their headlights off. Drivers there are required to leave their headlights on even during the day, or they may face a fine up to $100.Do you often buy things using coins? Don’t do it in Canada. The Currency Law of 1985 doesn’t allow using only coins to buy things. Even the use of thedollar-coin is limited. I could feel her chest shaking as she tried not to cry but failed. For all of my twenty-four years, my mom had been supportive. Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me. Now I knew it would have to flow the other way.Mom didn’t stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer, she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications(药物) with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school. “The not-knowing is the worst.” she said. The operation was successful. The chemo(化疗) was the harder part. I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one. She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish. “Cancer can take my hair, my nails, my health, my very life. But it can’t take my smile.” Mom said.Mom learned to share her fears with me, and it formed an even deeper bond between us. Yet I am certain there were fears she didn’t share because she was still protecting me—worries she only shared with Dad. Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer. Mom always said, “When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it, you take away some of its power.”Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars. From her, I’ve learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it.24. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?A. There were other ways to treat cancer.B. B.Complaint does no good to one’s health.C.Positive attitudes get one through hardships. D.Sharing feelings helps reduce sufferings a lot.CImagine you’re at the supermarket checkout. You pay the cashier, load your food into the cart, then take one third of your newly purchased items outside and throw them into the trash. This may sound unbelievable, but millions of us worldwide do this regularly, although in a more non-di rect way.In the West, most of this food is thrown away by businesses that are unable to sell it, or by consumers who buy too much. And the majority of this food, despite being past its shelf life, is still perfectly fit for human consumption. So where do these excess products end up?“We receive food from various sources, including food banks, restaurants, cafes, food photographers, and events” says Adam Smith, founder of The Real Junk Food Project. The British company recently made headlines in the UK after it became the country’s first “food waste supermarket”, offering products that would otherwise have ended up in waste. Most of its customers are low-income families, or even college students who find it difficult to afford food.“We ask our customers to pay what they feel in time, money or skills. Wedo have people coming with the intention of paying and if it carries on like it does, it will pay for the cost of the warehouse,” Smith explains. Some shops across Europe are also taking action. France recently passed a law that says all supermarkets must now donate all of their unsold produce to charities, while the Italian government has also put similar measures in place. Hundreds of cafes that serve meals made from surplus food have been set up across the continent too, selling dishes at bottom prices or even giving them away for free.So what can we do to prevent our dinner ending up in the bin? “Buy less. Or at least shop smarter,” said Smith. After all, the best place for food is in our stomachs, not the trash.28. What’s the meaning of the underlined “being past its shelf life” in Paragraph 2?A. Being past its “sell-by” date.B. Being far from enough.C. Being past the length of being eatable.D. Being out of date.29. Wha t do we know about The Real Junk Food Project?A. It gets food from the waste.B. It wants to make a fat profit.C. It drew massive attention lately.D. Its main aim is to do charities.30. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?A. Some countries in Europe are actively helping poor people.B. Some countries in Europe are trying to address food waste.C. Related shops in Europe are willing to give away their food.D. All the countries in Europe have made laws to handle food waste.31. What is the best title of the passage?A. Turning Trash into TreatsB. Buying Less and SmarterC. Food Trash IndustryD. Warn against Food WasteDWhen a storm is coming, most people leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety. But there are a few people who will get into cars and gostraight for the center of the storm. These people are willing to risk being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up.“Storm chasing(追逐)” is becoming an increasingly popular hobby, especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.Although anyone can do it, storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm seasons.Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement. “Storm chasing is 95% driving,” says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. “Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers.”However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature. It is the greatest show on Earth.”32. For storm chasing, the first thing storm chasers do is to ____.A.get quickly into their cars for safety B.wait patiently for the storm to developC.head straight for the center of the storm D.collect information about a coming storm33. Beginners of storm chasing are advised ____.A.to do it in an organized way B.to spend much more timeon itC.not to get too close to a storm D.not to drive in aheavy rain34. By saying “it is all worth it” in the last paragraph, the author meansthat ___.A.storm chasing costs a lot of money B.efforts in stormchasing are well paidC.storm chasing is worth hours of waiting D.a storm presents the greatest show on Earth35. What can we learn from the text?A.Storm chasing is only fit for young people.B.Some storm chasers were killed during the storms.C.Storm chasing is becoming popular around the world.D.Sometimes storm chasers get nothing but disappointment.第二节七选五(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。

One day when he was working, there was a gas explosion (爆炸), killing one worker and injuring him.“I lost my right arm above the elbow, about three inches above the elbow, and my leftabout six inches below,” he explained.“How am I going to make a living and take care of my family? I had always worked with my hands,” he said. Then with a simple little drawing, a new future opened up for him.“I thought it was wonderful in a way,” Damon said. “Something was telling me to focus on this and everything will be alright.” Damon doesn’t have a perfect prosthetic arm (假肢)—just a hook (钩子), which he finds works best.He and his wife Jen run True Grit Art Gallery in Middleboro, Massachusetts, where he shows the works of local artists. With his disability check from the government, he can afford to be an artist. He is a man doing what he wants with his life, a nd doesn’t look at his situation as a hard time.“I don’t see it that way,” Damon said. “Suffering an injury like this has a way of making you focus on what’s important in life.”He believes his best work is still ahead of him. But it turns out that today’s students are not going to be satisfied with any job. According to the latest survey, making a difference through their work is essential (必要的) to young people’s happiness. The survey found that 72 percent of graduating college seniors believe being able to have a positive social influence through their work is essential to their happiness. Making a difference is so important to them that 45 percent say they would take a 15-percent pay cut to work at an organization that has a social or environmental influence, and 58 percent say they would take a pay cut to work for an organization whose values are the same as their own.Besides this, the survey found that female students are far more likely to put social influence in first place than their male classmates, echoing the results of a former study showing that female maths and science majors are more likely to say they go into those fields to make a difference. One reason for the emphasis (强调) on improving the world probably has to do with the culture of colleges, which encourages students to connect their studies back to real-world problems. Students are used to discussing important social issues (问题) with their friends and professors, and doing something about them in class or through volunteer activities. Once students develop those habits, they don’t shut them off when graduation rolls around. 8.What does the underlined word “echoing” in paragraph 3 probably mean?A.Learning . B.Repeating.C.Believing. D.Creating.9.What is one of the reasons for the emphasis on students wanting to improve the world? B.Less than half of the college seniors will take a pay cut to work with the same values. C.Most college graduates believe it important to have a positive social influence in work.D.Female graduates are all putting more social influence in first place than male graduates. 11.Which could be the best title for the passage?A.Female Students Are Concerned about SocietyB.Young People’s Happiness Doesn’t Depend on MoneyC.Graduates Become More Interested in Challenging JobsD.Many Graduates Would Take a Pay Cut to Make a DifferenceDid you ever have to say “no” to somebody? Such as a classmate who asks to go to lunch with you? New research suggests that, at least socially, a rejection (拒绝) should not include an apology. In other words, saying you are sorry does not make the person being rejected feel any better. In fact, it might make the rejected person feel worse. That is surprising. Many people consider it to be good manners to say they are sorry when they turn down a request.Gili Freedman is doing some related research at Dartmouth College. For her research, she asked over 1,000 people to respond to different examples of social rejection. In one example, the researchers asked people for their reaction (反应)after a person named Taylor asked to join a co-worker who went out to lunch every Friday. And Taylor was told “no”. But in some cases, the person rejecting Taylor offered an apology. In other cases, the people doing the rejection did not say they were sorry. People were asked how they would feel if they were being turned down, just as Taylor was. Most said they would be more hurt by a rejection with an apology than a rejection without an apology.Freedman said the reason is that apologies make people feel like they need to say that the rejection was okay— even when they felt like it was not okay. Rejection without an apology lets them express their feelings of disappointment, hurt or anger more easily. Freedman also said that an apology often makes the person doing the rejection feel better—even as it makes the person being rejected feel worse. Her research deals only with social communication. A business situation might be very different. “If a manager rejects a job interviewee or a boss must tell an employee that he or she is being fired from a job,” Freedman said, “reactions to apologies may be different.”12.Why do people say they are sorry when they express rejection?A.Because they think it is more polite.B.Because they think it helps them express their dislike better.C.Because they think apologies are the basis of communication.D.Because they think it sounds more comfortable for the listener.13.In Gili Freedman’s research, over 1,000 people ________.A.rejected others without an apologyB.offered an apology when rejecting othersC.would be more hurt by a rejection with an apologyD.were asked to answer the question in different situations14.What role does an apology play in rejection?A.It makes the rejection more acceptable.B.It makes a good impression on the listener.C.It makes the communication more pleasant.D.It makes the person doing the rejecting feel better.15.What will be mentioned next according to the last paragraph?A.The effect of an apology during a rejection.B.Gili Freedman’s research on business situations.C.A rejection with an apology in a business situation.D.The difference between a social situation and a business one.二、完形填空It happened when our grandchild, Anne, was three years old. For a fever, I would receive a red pill, which I now know is a type of antibiotic (抗生素).Another thing I know now is that the criminal behind my cold is a virus. The drugs I used only relieved the symptoms. When I went to a German hospital intending to get some medicine to treat my cold, I got nothing more than a pat on my shoulder and words from the doctor, saying that I should get some really good rest. The first time this happened, I was shocked. I wondered how I could put up with my sickness without the help of medicine. But the longer I stayed in Germany, the better I knew how to self-medicate as other Germans do.I learned to take vitamin C to build up my resistance. But what I like the most is drinking "Erkaltungstee" . For German people, Erkaltungstee is what their grandmother gives them when they catch a cold. It's a tea bag mainly made of lime flower and orange rind. Another popular cold remedy in Germany is chicken soup. During my first winter in Germany, I got a really bad cold. My neighbor brought me a bowl of chicken soup to make me feel better. It contained a lot of ginger, onion, garlic, carrots and celery. It's better than chicken soup.(4) What can we infer from the text?A. Germans tend not to use antibiotics to treat cold.B. The author often catches a cold in Taiwan.C. Dooring is when a driver or passenger opens the door into another road user—typically cyclist—without looking for other road users.Cycling UK chief executive Paul Tuohy told Gloucestershire Live: "Some people seem to see car dooring as a bit of a joke, but it's not and can have serious consequences. Cycling UK wants to see great awareness made about the dangers of opening your car door carelessly, and people to be encouraged to look before they open."The charity says 2, 009 of the 3, 000 injuries were sustained by cyclists, resulting in five fatalities but says this might not be the full extent of the danger.Cycling UK says not all car dooring incidents will be attended by police, so the charity has written to transport minister Jesse Norman calling for a public awareness campaign urging all car occupants, not just drivers, to look before opening vehicle doors. One of the ways the charity suggests is the "Dutch reach", where people leaving a vehicle reach over and use the non-door side hand to open the door.Cycling UK also suggests harsher laws and advice on safer road positioning for people who cycle.Mr. Tuohy said: "In the Netherlands, they are known for practicing a method, known sometimes as the 'Dutch reach', which we think could be successfully encouraged in the UK.""Cycling UK has written to the Department for Transport asking them to look into this, and highlight the dangers of 'car dooring' through a public awareness THINK style campaign."If you're really concerned about opening a door into the path of a cyclist coming behind you, consider using what's known as the "Dutch reach" to open the door. Its creators hope the plane will make the first around-the-world journey without any fuel. The plane is called Solar Impulse 2. It has one seat and is made from carbon fiber. The plane weighs only as much as a car but its wings are wider than a Boeing 747. The plane's wings stretch 72 meters across. "We want to show we can fly day and night in an aircraft without a drop of fuel." Mr. Piccard said. Some parts of the trip will require the pilots to be in the tiny plane for five to six days and nights in a row. They will cross the Pacific Ocean, stop in the United States, and continue over southern Europe or North Africa. In a new study, dog owners took 2, 760 additional steps-compared to people who didn’t have a dog at home. But here’s the real good news: That extra exercise could help adults meet their recommended weekly totals for physical activity. The research, published in BMC Public Health, focused on adults 65 and older, who tend to be less active than younger people. The study included 43 dog owners and 43 non-dog owners, all of whom were monitored (监控) continuously for three week-long periods. When they compared the two groups, the researchers found that dog ownership was connected with a large, potentially health-improving effect.Dog owners walked about 23 minutes longer each day than non-dog owners, 119 minutes against 96 minutes on average. They also took an additional 2, 760 steps, and had eight fewer continuous periods of sitting down. Most of that extra walking was done at proper pace, 100 or more steps a minute. Dog owners walked at this pace for 32 minutes a day, against just 11 minutes a day for non-dog owners. The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests that adults get at least 150 minutes ofphysical activity a week. This increased walking time alone could satisfy that requirement, say the researchers - so it makes sense that 87 percent of dog owners in the study met these guidelines, versus just 47 percent of non-dog owners.Co-author Nancy Gee says that pet ownership may help older adults get more activity or keep their current activity level for a longer period of time. “This could improve their chances of a better quality of life, improved cognition (认知), and perhaps, even a long life, ” she said. Here at Health, we’ll add that caring for pets has been shown to have plenty of other physical and mental health benefits as well.16.What can we learn about the research?A. It was targeted at old people.B. It had an undesirable effect on dog owners.C. It was sponsored (资助) by the BMC Public Heal.D. It mainly considered the mental health of dog owners.17.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?A. To show the guidelines of the research.B. To present the results of the research.C. To describe the process of doing the research.D. To explain the reasons for conducting the research.18.What does Nancy Gee think of owning a dog?A. It will take a lot of time.B.
