Ultra-lean Combustion Mode. Under most normal driving
Chapter 2 Internal Combustion Engine 2.7 Gasoline direct injection
Two main operating modes of Volkswagen AG's fuel stratified injection (FSI) which uses more operating modes and FSI’s fuel-saving potential is shown in Figure 2-16. A typical pulse injection system with direct injection is given in Fig.2-17.

conditions, up to speeds of 120 km/h, the Mitsubishi GDI engine operates in ultra-lean combustion mode, resulting in less fuel consumption. In this mode, fuel injection occurs at the latter stage of the compression stroke and ignition occurs at an ultra-lean air-fuel ratio of 30-40. This operating mode is also called as stratified-charge mode. Superior Output Mode. When the GDI engine is operating with higher loads or at higher speeds, fuel injection takes place during the intake stroke. This optimizes combustion by ensuring a homogeneous, cooler air-fuel mixture which minimizes the possibility of engine knocking. This mode is also called as homogeneous-charge mode.

3.5 Automtomatic transmission with hydrodynamic converter (AT)-Conventional automatic transmission Torque converter ( Fig.3-10 ) serves as a starting clutch to facilitates smooth and comfortable drawing away, transmits and multiplies the engine torque, and damps engine torsional vibrations. gear systems are used to multiply torques, reduce speeds and reverses the direction of rotation for the reverse gear. Most automatics use the planetary gear sets (Fig.3-11). The commonly used planetary gears are Ravigneaux set and Simpson set. A simple planetary-gear set can also be connected to the upstream or downstream of a Ravigneaux set or Simpson set. Either the outer gear or the sun gear may be held stationary, providing more than one possible torque multiplication factor for each set of gears. Also, if all three gears are forced to rotate at the same speed, the gear set forms, in effect, a solid shaft.

Chapter 2 Internal Combustion Engine 2.6 Gasoline Electronic Fuel Injection System
Engine load is transmitted to the computer by means of an intake manifold absolute pressure sensor. The sensor converts manifold vacuum into a small electrical signal. This input allows the computer to increase fuel supply when the engine is under load and needs a richer mixture, and decrease fuel supply when engine load is light. Every injection system has a temperature sensor to measure engine coolant temperature. Many injection systems have an additional sensor to measure the temperature of the incoming air. Some late model fuel injection systems monitor the amount of air entering the engine by using an airflow sensor(Fig.2-10). The computer takes this input and compares it with engine RPM and manifold vacuum to determine the amount of fuel to inject. There are three types of airflow sensors, the heated wire, the air valve and the Karmann vortex.

III. Exercises
❖The motor vehicle engine is basically a device for converting the internal energy stored in its fuel into mechanical energy. It is classified as an internal combustion engine by virtue of this energy conversion taking place within the engine cylinders . Since the term ”energy” implies the capacity to perform work, the engine is thus able to propel the vehicle along the road and, within limits, overcome unwanted opposition to its motion arising from rolling friction and air drag. To facilitate this process the engine is combined with a transmission system.

Chapter 6 Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems
6.1 Lead Acid Battery and Circuit protection
devices
6.1.1 lead-acid storage battery A lead-acid storage battery (Figure 6-1) is an electrochemical device that produces voltage and delivers electrical current. The battery is the primary "source" of electrical energy used in vehicles today. When charging, the battery converts electricity into chemical energy, and when discharging, it converts chemical energy into electricity, producing a current. 6.1.2 Circuit protection devices It is necessary to protect electrical circuit against shorting (accidentally touching ground) that could burn up the wiring. Electrical units must be protected against overloads also. In circuits, Circuit protection devices must be installed in series with the electrical devices or wiring to be protected. The common types of circuit protection devices are fuse, fusible link and circuit breaker, see Table 6-1.
A circuit may be protected by a special wire that acts as a fuse. This wire is called a fusible link.
A Circuit breaker feeds current through a bimetallic strip and a set of points to the remainder of the circuit. When the current exceeds the breaker’s rating, the bimetallic strip heats and bends to separate the points. Once it cools, it will close the circuit.
Relays are used to direct large current flows that might overheat and damage a switch, they are a type of solenoid switch that closes electrical contacts. Most of relays are usually contained in relay block and junction block (J/B).
