Owing to my outstanding performance at high school, I was given an offer to the BA program in English in Chongqing University, one of the “China’s Ivy League Universities, without taking the mandatory National College Entrance Examination. Majoring in English, I took many courses related to English languages and culture, covering linguistics, phonology, grammar, literature, and western cultures, all of which equipped me with some knowledge related to language acquisition to help me better understand English in practice. Besides, I also self-taught English pedagogy by reviewing many scholastic journals including TESOL Quarterly, all providing me with innovative and up-to-date teaching methodologies. My due diligent efforts were paid off as I ranked top 17 in my major and won scholarships for academic excellence many times. My solid foundation in the English language and English pedagogy will put me at an advantage when studying at your TESOL program. In order to unleash my potential in doing research, I joined a scientific and technology training program for undergraduates as the team leader, during which I gave my leadership a full play by successfully leading and finishing the project. Out of sheer interest in the phenomenon of studying overseas, we drew our research topic on the Chinese students’Craze for Studying Overseas and its Financial Returns. Before the research, I led a conference to brainstorm our ideas of questionnaire design. Upon completion of questionnaire design, I divided the group into several smaller ones to facilitate working efficiency. With data collected, I was responsible for software-assisted data analysis and the writing up of the research report. Finally, our excellent oral defense won many complimentary words from teachers. Through this process, not only did I strength my research skill, a required quality for TESOL teachers, I also became fascinated by the innovative teaching mode that is used in western countries. Therefore, it is from then on that the seed of studying overseas was sown.Apart from improving my linguistic ability and research skills, I also tried to hone what I had learned into teaching practices through securing internships. My internship as a teaching assistant at Shandong Justice Police V ocational College is a rewarding experience in my college years. My position as a TA not only allowed me to handle some teaching management issues like sorting outstudents’ information, grading students papers and designing test papers, but also provided me with chances to serve in the real-life teaching practices. In the process, I did not act like a sage on the stage, giving orders for students to follow; instead, I served more than a guide to inspire students learning by using effective teaching methods to attract their attention and participation. Realizing that students in that class showed little interest in English learning, I tried my endeavor to conduct English teaching in a relaxed method. Role-plays, film dubbing, movie appreciation all constitute my methods for motivating students to learn. In view that students’ English proficiency is not on the same level, I used my own tool to motivate-humor.
