Holding the same motivation to be together with their own loves, the two pair of lovers, Romeo and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai in The Butterfly Lovers seem lived in tragic lives and both of their loves became poignant love stories.Romeo and Juliet could not get rid of their family feud,and them died for their love.and Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai could not get rid of the feudal bondage, also their love was sad.however, because of different cultural backgrounds, their visions of love, Psychology and their ending are totally different.
Firstly, Romeo and Juliet was written by Shakespeare, it was one of his best tragedy.The Butterfly Lovers was written in feudal society. That make them have the different cultural backgrounds. In the time of Shakespeare, there is a renaissance, the tragedy is one of the bourgeois humanists' important anti-feudal weapon. In this sense, Romeo and Juliet was the reflection of the renaissance’s spirit. The Butterfly Lovers described the lovers in feudal society , their love could not be bless by their family . it was the reflection of feudal society.
The second difference was the vision of love. In "Romeo and Juliet" the lovers reflected the bright bold of Westerners. Romeo and Juliet fall
in love at first sight, and show their love apparently. Them came to the
church to get marry soon after they expressed their love to each other. On the Contray, the Butterfly Lovers embodied the ideas of Easterner completely, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai were classmates for three years, and they lived in togeter, using the bowls to divide the bed, Liang Shanbo never knew that Zhu Yingtai was a girl. All of those embodied the implicit beauty of Eastern love. But in order to follow her ideal love, she died after Liang Shanbo’s death, this inspired generations of young men and women to pursue their ture love.
The third difference was the differeces of the characters. Romeo, using the words of his enemy: “Frankly speaking, he is a good guy in Verona.”In the conflicts of the family. He was not a troublemaker. He pursued of a ideal love, and he dared to die for the love. Juliet, who was full of enthusiasm, candor, intrepidity. For love, she can abandon the rule of her family, and gave up her own surname to love her enemy’s son. Similarly, Zhu Yingtai was active, daring, enthusiasm and commitment. Benting to marry Liang Shanbo, and dared to die with him. And Liang Shanbo, a farmer’s son, he was naive, honest, loyal, kind and humane. In his love, using death to express his loyalty of love, he struggled with it, and resisting the dark feudal ethical society of his unique way. We can say that all of the four characters are perfect, they all pursued the faithful love. But, Romeo and Juliet loved each other at the first glance, and they soon passionately in love. However, The Butterfly Lovers used many years to
determine their relationship of love.
The last and also the biggest difference between then was the ending. In "Romeo and Juliet", Romeo and Juliet were belong to two famous families which had a feud. The two families struggled for power, and the conflict had escalated to a breach of the peace. Their love were following their fates in the beginning, ultimately, they died for their love, became the victims of the interests of the feudal family.But“The Butterfly Lovers”was different from Romeo and Juliet ,the Butterfly Lovers and their love story took place in the feudal social. Their parents ordered of their marriage, but they ignored the feudal doctrine dogma, seeking for the freedom and happiness by self-determined life. It was impossible for them to get a ture happy ending, but Chinese were not accustomed to give a complete tragic ending to a beautiful love, so that there was a butterfly cracked the tomb, giving the tragedy a strong mythological happy ending.
Romeo and Juliet and The Butterfly Lovers are all the excellent works. Although they are different, but it does not matter for people to love the two stories.。
