冬天逼近了,寒风夹着雪花向他袭来……That day he decreased the distance between him and the ship by three miles; the next day by two-for he was crawling now as Bill had crawled; and the end of the day found the ship still seven mailes away and him unable to make even a mile a day. Still the indian summer held on, and he continued to crawl and faint ,turn and turn about; and ever the sick wolf coughed and wheezed at his heels. His knees had become raw meat like his feet, and though he paddled them with the shirt from his back it was a red track he left behind him on the moss and stones. Once , glancing back, he saw the wolf licking hungrily his bleeding trail, and he saw sharply what his own end might be-unless-unless he could get the wolf. Then began as grim a tragedy of existence as was ever played-a sick man that crawled, a sick wolf that limped, two creatures dragging their dying carcasses across the desolation and hunting each other’s lives.

The Meaning of Life 生命的意义When we talk about something like the meaning and purpose of life, on the one hand, the answer we demand is to illustrate it with finite steps, finite words, quite similar to writing stories of our own. On the other hand, we expect this story to be as general as possible, with a relatively regular commencement, development, highlight, and ending. But this kind of answer is, to be honest, extremely hard to obtain. Although we share the same beginning of birth and ending of death, it is still almost impossible to find a singular content between them. So what we are truly curious about when this question comes up is how to fill our story with an exhilarating process and happy ending. As we have agreed, there is no both general and specific answer, so what I believe meaningful to provide here is nothing but a common goal at the start and a standard to check if your life is satisfactory enough at the end of it.As long ago as human beings came into existence, there is only one aim for which we have been striving for thousands of years—to improve the quality of our life—both as individual and as the entirety of mankind. But at some moments we just become too embarrassed to admit it, quite unaware of the fact that this process itself serves as the most valuable meaning while we are busily engaged in seeking it. This idea may not look very noble, but it is a realistic and practical one for the simple reason that it is always when we are faced with difficulties and frustration that this question pays a visit to our mind. So if it is bothering you as a young man, try to think about some ways to change your life into a better one, both physically and mentally. As for the standard, allow me to introduce a quotation from Wittgenstein①: the best answer to the question is the extermination to the question, that is to say: as your life is coming to an end, when you look back at it, you find nothing to be regretful for as you have achieved everything that was in you to do; you feel your story is complete and your life is increasingly merged in the universal life; when this question strikes you as an old friend, there seems nothing more to say, then you shall deserve the congratulation that you have found your own meaning of life and freedom from confusion because when you find there’s no need answering the question is always the time when you have already had one.I.New Words and Expressionspurpose [ˈpɜːpəs] n. 内容exhilarating[ɪɡˈzɪləreɪtɪŋ] adj. 整体unaware[ˌʌnəˈweə(r)] adj.未察觉的engage[ɪnˈɡeɪdʒ] in phrasal verb 参加;从事frustration[frʌˈstreɪʃn] n. II.Notes to the Text1.Wittgenstein,

In conclusion, the meaning of life is a deeply personal and subjective concept. It is something that we must each discover for ourselves through our own experiences and interactions with the world. For me, the meaning of life is about finding our own unique path and using our passions and talents to make a positive impact on the world around us.
What is the meaning of life? This is a question that has puzzled humanity for centuries. Some people believe that the meaning of life is to seek happiness, while others believe that it is to fulfill a certain purpose or destiny. As for me, I believe that the meaning of life is to find our own unique path and to make a positive impact on the world around us.

The True Meaning of Life。

Life is a precious gift that we have been given, but many of us often find ourselves questioning its true meaning. Some may believe that the meaning of life lies in achieving success, wealth, or fame, while others may find meaning in relationships, experiences, or personal growth. However, I believe that the true meaning of life goes beyond these superficial pursuits and lies in the connections we make, the impact we have on others, and the legacy we leave behind. One of the most important aspects of life is the connections we make with others. Our relationships with family, friends, and even strangers shape who we are and how we view the world. These connections provide us with love, support, and a sense of belonging that can bring meaning and fulfillment to our lives. By fostering these relationships and nurturing them with care and compassion,we can create a sense of purpose and connection that transcends our individual experiences.Furthermore, the impact we have on others can also give meaning to our lives. Whether it is through acts of kindness, generosity, or service to others, the way we interact with those around us can leave a lasting impression that extends far beyond our own existence. By making a positive impact on the lives of others, we can create a ripple effect that spreads love, joy, and hope to those in need. In this way, our actions can have a profound impact on the world around us and contribute to the greater good of humanity. Finally, the legacy we leave behind is another important aspect of the true meaning of life. While material possessions and achievements may fade with time, the impact we have on others and the memories we create can endure long after we are gone. By living a life of purpose, integrity, and compassion, we can leave a legacy that inspires others to follow in our footsteps and continue the cycle of love and kindness that we have started. In thisway, our lives can have a lasting impact on future generations and contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. In conclusion, the true meaning of life lies in the connections we make, the impact we have on others, and the legacy we leave behind. By nurturing our relationships, making a positive impact on the world around us, and living a life of purpose and integrity, we can find meaning and fulfillment in our own lives and create a lasting legacy that will endure for generations to come. Let us strive to live each day with love, kindness, and compassion, and make the most of the precious gift of life that we have been given.。

The meaning of life生命的意义John Boynton PriestleyLife is never just being. It is becoming a relentless, flowing on. Our parents live on through us, and we will live on through our children. The institutions we build endure, and we will endure through them. The beauty we fashion cannot be dimmed by death. Our flesh may perish, our hands will wither, but that which they create in beauty and goodness and truth lives on for all time to come.

Don't spend and waste your lives accumulating objects that will only turn to dust and ashes. Pursue not so much the material as the ideal, for ideas alone invest life with meaning and are of enduring worth.

1Compared to the universe, our lives are really short, just like a meter. But the meaning of life doesn’t depend on its length but contributions. For example, Marie Curie, in order to find the radium, she devoted her whole life to the research. Though the radioactive element had shorter her life, she never gave up her mind to serve the world. According to her story, I conclude that the first meaning of life is contribution. The standard ofjudging a life isn’t how much he asks for but how much he gives away.

Have you thought about what you want people to say about you after you’re gone? Can you hear the voice saying, “He was a great man.” Or “She really will be missed.” What else do they say?
One of the strangest phenomena of life is to engage in a work that will last long after death. Isn’t that a lot like investing all your money so that future generations can bare interest on it? Perhaps, yet if you look deep in your own heart, you’ll find something drives you to make this kind of contribution---something drives every human being to find a purpose that lives on after death.
Do you hope to memorialize your name? Have a name that is whispered with reverent awe? Do you hope to have your face carved upon 50 ft of granite rock? Is the answer really that simple? Is the purpose of lifetime contribution an ego-driven desire for a mortal being to have an immortal name or is it something more?
A child alive today will die tomorrow. A baby that had the potential to be the next Einstein will die from complication is at birth. The circumstances of life are not set in stone. We are not all meant to live life through to old age. We’ve grown to perceive life3 as a full cycle with a certain number of years in between. If all of those years aren’t lived out, it’s a tragedy. A tragedy because a human’s potential was never realized. A tragedy because a spark was snuffed out before it ever became a flame.
By virtue of inhabiting a body we accept these risks. We expose our mortal flesh to the laws of the physical environment around us. The trade off isn’t so bad when you think about it. The problem comes when we construct mortal fantasies of what life should be like. When life doesn’t conform to our fantasy we grow upset, frustrated, or depressed.
We are alive; let us live. We have the ability to experience; let us experience. We have the ability to learn;
let us learn. The meaning of life can be grasped in a moment.
A moment so brief it often evades our perception.
What meaning stands behind the dramatic unfolding of life? What single truth can we grasp and hang onto for dear life when all other truths around us seem to fade with time?
These moments are strung together in a series we call events. These events are strung together in a series we call life. When we seize the moment and bend it according to our will, a will driven by the spirit deep inside us, then we
have discovered the meaning of life, a meaning for us that shall go on long after we depart this Earth.
