It stars Jackie Chan.M: OK, that’s fine. I like him, too.Text 8M: Hey, Lucy. Do you have some time to talk about next w eek’s trip with me?W: Sure, Dave.M: OK. So, we’re leaving on Monday from Hartsfield International Airport, and returning on Friday. Do we take ourselves to the airport? Now, how much money do you expect to have for a year?M: From what I’ve read, it seems that a starting pay would be around $12,000 a year. W: Here, you would start at $10,500 for the first year…a kind of training period. Then you would go to $15,000.M: That sounds fair enough. What do you think are the chances for me to get a job here?W: Well, I’m talking to three people today and four tomorrow. We’ll be hiring two people. You’ll hear from us sometime next month. Good luck! And thanks for coming in today.Text 10M: Well, I’d love to share with you my pe rsonal opinions on city life and life in small towns. I grew up in a small town until I was 18 and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. Afte r ten years of living in one, I can’t imagine ever living in a small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can’t get around without one because there isn’t any kind of public transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you have a choice of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, if you don’t have a car, you’d better live in th e city. I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. However, these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. However, you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of course, safety should be considered, and that’s one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more careful and live in a large city than to feel safe but dull.。

Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks(群)so large that they darkened the sky for hours. It was calculated that when its population reach its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons – a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant birds in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.Sadly, the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands. Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans’ need for wood, which scattered(驱散)the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again. In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons, but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden in September 1, 1914.【小题1】In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons _______.A. were the biggest bird in the worldB. lived mainly in the south of AmericaC. did great harm to the natural environmentD. 1. Dear John,My name is Amber and I want to share my story with you because what you've shared about life and positive energy has changed my life. This past year has been one of the hardest for me. I felt I was stuck in a position that had nothing to do with what I wanted to do with my life. In January, after two years of being together, my boyfriend left me.I read your blog every Monday morning as I drink my coffee at work, but it wasn't until this March that I told myself "no more negativity(消极)" as you taught readers in your blog. Since then I've got into new habits at work to keep my energy positive. When people walk in the front door, I'm the first face they see, so I smile big when I say "good morning" to them, especially on Mondays. Instead of waiting for someone to ask me for help, I offer it with an open mind. The CEO noticed my change and offered me the executive assistant position that I wanted. One of the biggest things I've taken to heart from your blog is changing my perspective(看法)on my job. Yes, it was not an important position, but when I was passionate(热情的)about it, I could make my life fulfilling. All in all, I have to thank you somehow for having the passion to help others because it trulyis inspiring to me. The air quality has worsened in the Chinese capital since Wednesday, causing reneweddiscontent among residents.Without rainfall and wind to decrease pollutants, particulate matter(颗粒物质) has been accumulating in the air. Most monitoring stations measured PM 10 (particulate matter smaller than 10 micrograms) at higher than 300 micrograms per cubic meter. In southwestern Beijing's Fangshan District, the Liangxiang station recorded 516 micrograms of PM 10 per cubic meter, the highest reading of the day, according to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center.More than 150 micrograms is considered harmful to health.Beijing has been covered by heavy smog off and on this winter, and the ongoing air concerns are wearing on residents, particularly as they prepare to celebrate the Spring Festival holiday next week."I almost got choked by the smog when I stepped out of the office building on Wednesday, "said Yang Yanli, 24, an accountant."The smell is so terrible, as though I'm ________ lots of coal, that it has spoiled my holiday mood."Unlike the smog that hit mostly the southern part of the capital on January 1, the smog in recent days has covered the entire city, according to the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau.Worse yet, it will continue until Saturday, when the wind will pick up and blow it away, the bureau predicted. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests people stay at home to protect themselves from breathing and heart problems caused by heavy smog and people with breathing problems put off traveling if the smog stays. But many people said they had to brave the bad air to travel, especially migrants who are eager to reunite with their families during the Spring Festival.(1)According to the passage, most monitoring stations in Beijing measured PM 10at________this week.A higher than 300 micrograms per cubic meterB smaller than 10 micrograms per cubic meterC 516 micrograms of PM 10 per cubic meterD more than 150 micrograms per cubic meter.(2)According to the passage, the highest reading about pollution is taken in________.A The Chinese Center for Disease Control and PreventionB Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring CenterC Beijing Environmental ProtectionBureau D Southwestern Beijing's Fangshan District.(3)The underlined word"inhaling"in the third paragraph probably means________.A coughingB breathing inC chokingD sneezing.(4)The smog weather is supposed to last until________.A springB the Spring FestivalC SaturdayD Wednesday.3. What is politeness? This sounds like a simple question. In daily life, we often make judgments about what is polite and what is not polite. For example, to offer your seat to the elderly on a bus is considered polite behavior, and to interrupt when someone is talking is considered impolite; to greet someone the first time you meet him in the morning is polite and to stand up to reach for the dish you want at a dinner table is impolite. So politenesscan first of all be regarded as a phenomenon, an observable social phenomenon. What I would like to propose is that as an observable social phenomenon, politeness is something superficial, but to account for what is understood at the surface, we should dig into the depth where different cultural values are rooted. When being complimented (赞美), an English﹣speaking person would readily accept the compliment by saying something like"Thank you"to show his appreciation of the praise, but a Chinese speaker would try to deny the truth of the compliment. They both think they are behaving properly.Yet neither of them would think the other is being polite. The English speaker is being polite to the extent that by accepting and showing appreciation of the compliment, and he avoids hurting the positive face of the person who makes it; the Chinese speaker is showing modesty by Denigrating(贬低) himself, ignoring the fact of the compliment paid to him.As has been mentioned, self﹣denigration has been at the core of the Chinese understanding of politeness for over two thousand years. The Chinese, in order to show modesty, will go to such lengths as to underrate what he himself has achieved and deny the truth of a complimentary remark.(1)According to the first paragraph, politeness can be briefly described as________A proper social phenomenaB being modestC showing appreciationD an observable social phenomenon.(2)In the author's opinion, the nature of politeness lies in________.A something superficialB what is understood at the surfaceC different cultural valuesD the root of different thoughts.(3)Which of the following is TRUE?________A Chinese speakers dislike being complimented.B English﹣speaking people are reluctant to accept compliment.C Chinese tend to show politeness and modesty by denying the truth of praise.D Chinese people think highly of British politeness while English people think poorly of Chinese politeness..(4)What's the author's attitude towards Chinese politeness?________A Objective.B Critical.C Optimistic.D Approving.4. Why is it so difficult to fall asleep when you are overtired? There is no one answer that applies to every individual. But many people fail to note the difference between fatigue, physical tiredness and sleepiness, the inability to stay awake. It's possible to feel"tired"physically and still be unable to fall asleep, because while your body may be exhausted, you don't feel sleepy. To fall asleep, you need enough time to relax, even if you feel fatigued. It's not so easy to simply"turn off".According to Carl E.Hunt, director of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research in Bethesda, Maryland, most people do not allow themselves relaxed.Lack of sleep complicates matters even more.Experts say adults need at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night to function properly. When you get less sleep than that on consecutive (连续) nights, you begin to be burdened by"sleep debt".As sleep debt increases (and functionality decreases), your body experiences a stress response andbegins to release adrenaline (肾上腺素).Now a bad cycle has been created: You experience the feeling of being more and more tired, but your body is increasingly stimulated."Power sleeping"for more hours on weekends is only a temporary solution."There is no substitute for getting a good night's sleep on a regular basis, "says Hunt. Most of us, however, don't get the sleep we need.According to the 2002 National Sleep Foundation, Americans sleep an average of 6.9 hours per night during the week, and 58 percent of adults experience sleeplessness a few nights a week or more.(1)The writer intends to tell us________.A Americans don't get enough sleepB what benefits we can get from enoughsleep C lack of sleep has a bad effect on our body D why it's difficult for overtired people to fall asleep.(2)Which of the following is NOT caused by lack of sleep?________A Power sleeping.B Sleep debt.C Lack of adrenaline.D Function badly..(3)From the passage we can draw a conclusion that lack of sleep________.A is so common that it isn't worth paying attention toB doesn't matter for it can be solved by"Power sleepingC can make it easy to fall asleep when one isovertired D may make it difficult to fall asleep when one is overtired.第二节(共1小题;每小题10分,满分10分)阅读短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。
