Hi everybody! Welcome to English Solon, the only bilingual talk show in Jianghuai radio station. This is Jim with my partner, Betty.
在今天的节目里，我将和Jim 来盘点一下英语中的一些不查字典肯定会出错的词汇。
说起来挺复杂，其实就是把英语当中的一些鲜为人知的，在老外看来十分地道的用法为大家列举出来，以防以后遇到它们的时候望文生义，闹出笑话…

Jim ，之前咱们说过要把英语当中的一些长相具有欺骗性的，而在老外看来十分地道的用法为大家列举出来，right?
是的。
汉语讲究“顾名思义”，而英语因为语法或习惯等原因，可能名和义正好相反，稍不注意就会闹出大笑话。
下面就是一些经常会出错的词汇用法，找找你可能会犯错的词吧？
B .bank holiday. bank holiday 不是银行节，是公共假期.在英国国定假日叫bank holiday，也许银行与英国人关系太密切了，是生活中不可或缺的，所以国定假日银行不开门，就称之为bank holiday。
J living room. living room就是客厅，在英国又称之为sitting room，主要是普罗阶层的说法。
豪门贵族的客厅则称之为drawing room，但这里和画画没关系。
从前贵族客厅乃男士高谈阔论的地方，女性和小孩通常都会回避,withdraw。
所以, drawing room其实是withdrawing room的简称。
flat-footed. flat-footed 不是扁平足，有可能是手足无措
扁平足英文叫做flatfoot。
扁平足的人脚弓instep arch直接触地，不利于行走，因此flat-footed 常用来指笨手笨脚，手足失措。
如：
A recent drought caught the government flat-footed.
milk k run不是牛奶用光了，是旅行搭的飞机或火车停很多站，有别于直飞或直达，停靠好几站载客的飞机或火车，就像milkman送奶工，一天要跑好多地方一样，所以叫做milk run。
另外，英国有所谓的milk round，milk round 是指大公司每年到各大学征才的活动。
大概就是招聘会。

Jim，你觉得fourth estate应该是什么意思？
Fourth嗯，第四个。
Estate是地产财产的意思。
那fourth estate不就是第四笔地产吗？
分析的貌似挺有道理，不过不对！fourth estate不是第四笔地产，是指记者或新闻界。
estate 有地产、遗产、地位的意思。
欧洲传统上认为社会由贵族、教会、平民三大基层构成。
大家是否还记得高中历史书上的法国大革命的图片。
这些就是所谓的estate of the realm；近代新闻记者自成一个势力，则是传统三大阶层以外的第四阶层，称为fourth estate,有人把它译为第四权。
J full of beans. full of beans不是到处都是豆子，是精力充沛.bean,b-e-a-n, 通常指四季豆，大概是豆子营养丰富的原因，所以full of beans 意为精力充沛。
不过在美国俚语中另有“错误连篇”的意思。
on the couch. on the couch不一定是坐在沙发上，是看心理医师.couch就是sofa，看心理医师的时候，病人躺下来谈话的长椅也叫couch，所以 on the couch 也就有看心理医师的意思。
crow's feet. Crow是乌鸦，但是crow's feet在语句里可能并不止乌鸦脚，而是眼角的皱纹，鱼尾纹。
free shipping. Free shipping不是免费“偷渡”，而是免费邮寄
labour of love. labour of love不是为情所困，而是为了兴趣嗜好而无怨无
悔做的
industrial action. industrial action不是工业行动，是罢工之类的抗议手段
gray matter. gray matter不是灰色的东西,而是大脑皮层表面的灰质…大脑
里面的白质也就是 white matter
moonshine moonshine不一定是月光，也指私酒，或馊主意。

什么crow’s feet
不是乌鸦的脚，而是鱼尾纹，bank holyday 不是银行节而是公共假期。
这些与本土文化紧密相关的，比较口语化词汇，对于我们学英语的人来说就像是陷阱，
They’re kind of like many traps，making it difficult for us non-native speakers to get the right idea.
嗯，这些英语中的成语我们其实不必要刻意的去背，但如果偶尔遇到的时候，就把它记住，肯定是大有好处的。
你比如别人对你说 you must be pulling my leg 的时候，你可能会非常纳闷，pull your leg？How come he says Iam pulling his leg？我哪有拽他的腿啊？哈哈，实际上那是因为你不知道pull one’s leg 这个短语的意思。
Pull one’s leg就等于 be kidding，是开玩笑，而不是“拉后腿”。
还有，in one's birthday suit。
in one's birthday suit的意思是赤身裸体，不是“穿着生日礼服”。
an apple of love. an apple of love 西红柿，不是“爱情之果”
handwriting on the wall handwriting on the wall是不祥之兆，不是“大字报”。
bring down the house bring down the house 博得全场喝彩，不是“推倒房子”。
make one's hair stand on end. make one's hair- stand-on-end这个词组，可不是让某人气得头发竖起来，令人发指，而是令人毛骨悚然，十分恐怖的意思。
You don't say!在比较随意的对话中，You don't say!的意思为：是吗！表示不相信或者征求肯定，等等。
可不要按照字面意思理解成“你别说”,that’s too weird
You can say that again! You can say that again! 说得好！不是“你可以再说一遍”.
You can't be too careful in your work. You can't be too careful in your work，你工作越仔细越好，而不是“你工作不能太仔细”。

当然，要真正学会一个单词，除了要正确发音与拼写外，还必须了解单词的正确意义，才能准确使用。
当然最重要的是要有决心和信心。
