Apparently Yang Jiang wrote the book to fulfill the last wish of their cherished daughter, Qian Yuan, who died of cancer in 1997, even one year earlier than her father. We Three tells Yang Jiang’s family story。
The book is written in a unique style. In the first two parts, the author describes an extremely long dream. The scene of final separation is depicted naturally here。
However, the seemingly calm narration cannot hide the author’s immense inner pain. Life is ju st like a dream. That’s what Yang Jiang tells us after experiencing such a dramatic life。

An introduction to a translator I admire (Yang Jiang)
-陈莉莉-110501
As we all know, Qian Zhongshu and Yang Jiang is one of the famous couple of translator, who went through ups and downs.
Both Yang Jiang and QianZhongshu went to academics and made important contributions to the development of Chinese culture .people always be familiar with Qian Zhongshu much more
than Yang Jiang. But as for me, I admire Yang Jiang, the graceful,
vivid and profound women, rather than. Yang Jiang is a Chinese playwright, author, and translator.
She has written several successful comedies, and was the first Chinese person to produce complete Chinese version of Don Quixote from the Spanish original.
The legendary woman was born in Beijing in 1911, originally named Yang Jikang. She had a happy childhood, all this is contribute to her parents who lets every daughter development
their character freely, which is rare at that time and even at present. After graduating from Soochow university in 1932,Yang
Jiang enrolled in the graduate school of Tsinghua as a postgraduate, where she met her husband Qian Zhongshu and they
fell in love and married . Qian was a Chinese literary scholar
and writer who known for his wit and erudition. They two are
meant to each other .Qian’s well known satirical novel Fortress Besieged is inseparable from the help of yang. As the saying goes, behind every successful man stand at a women. Yang Jiang is not only playing an important role in her family, but do well at her work. In 1940s, while she live in Shanghai, her drama were brought onto the stage .after she commonly was known as Yang Jiang (her pen name) .people also called her Mr.YangJiang(in that period time, people will add Mr(xian sheng) in front of the first name of women to express their respect.) she had acquired English and French before, in order to make translation of Don Quixote better. She start to learn Spanish by herself in 1958,that year she was forty seven . her manuscript experience many difficulties before it has be finished. Her Chinese edition of Don Quixote was published and was given to the king of Spain by Deng Xiao ping, the great work was used twenty two years of Yang Jiang.
About her literary works: widow of the scholar – novelist QianZhongshu, she has written a memoir called We Three, recalling her husband and her daughter Qian Yuan .The short novel Mr.wang written in 1984was selected ass the passage in our middle school text book. In 1988, she published her only novel Baptism, a masterpiece of her husband. At the age of
ninety six, she surprised the world with her latest work Reaching the Brink of Life.
Her translate works: The 16th century spainish picaresque novel Lazaraillo de Tormes; French long novel Gill Blas;a selection of English essays since 1939;The Phaedo; Don Quixote.
From Yang Jiang I can learn that if I want to be a good translator. Firstly, of course, gaining large number of vocabularies of different fields is necessary .secondly, you should be patient. A good work will take much time. Slow and steady wins the race. Yang Jiang’s twenty two years of Don Quixote is a good example. She will read a whole book just for a correct note, retranslate a chapter a sentence and even cancel seven and a half chapters in Don Quixote for the lack of continuity when there is only eight. Third, as yang Jiang said that translation is like the servant who has to serve two masters, which is to say that translation should be loyal to both culture. A good translator should be loyalty to the original work, never put one’s own opinion into the work one’s need to translate.。
