1.H ow Long Will It Take to Learn

English

A: How long will it take to learn English? Will I be able to take other courses next semester or will English take up all of my time?

B: It’s hard to say. Language isn’t like other studies.

A: You mean I could finish this course and still not know English? You’ve got to be kidding!

B: I’m not kidding. Learning a la nguage is a question of forming language habits and that takes time.

A: So do we have to stay in this English class forever?

B: No. You just have to stay here long enough to get some orientation. Then you go on practicing and learning outside. A lot of learning depends on your personal motivation.

A: So it’s really the same story. Practice, practice, practice and more practice is the only way to learn a language.

B: You said it.

★It’s hard to say.

B: What do you think now?

A: There are lots of jobs, and almost everybody works. There is a high standard of living. People earn a lot, but they spend a lot to live. So there isn’t so much money after all.

B: But I still say Americans spend a lot more money on useless things than we Chinese do.

A: That’s true. But Americans work hard for their money like we do. I don’t know why our spending habits are so different.

A: I don’t think I understand what you mean. Could you explain a little more?

B: In reading you need to recognize language by seeing the words on the page and knowing what they are. In writing you have to produce language, you have to create your own words on a blank page.

A: Oh, now I see what you mean. When you’re reading, you are ju st looking, but when you are writing, you are actually doing something!

B: A reading knowledge of a language is larger and different from a writing knowledge. Don’t you think so?

A: I think I see what you mean. I can read Shakespeare but I definitely can’t write it.

B: Exactly.

A: So I have another question for you. What do you think is harder, speaking or understanding?

B: They’re bot h harder than reading or writing.

A: In what way?

B: Because they are direct communication with another person, and there’s a time limit. This time limit is the most serious problem for foreigners, even for those who know lots of English.

A: You are making me feel really discouraged.

B: I’m not trying to discourage you. I’m trying to help you. You have to live with these difficulties. Isn’t it better to know about them? The more you know about what you have to face, the better you’ll do. I promise!

A:Hi, there. My name’s Paul Brown. I’m from the United States. B:Nice to meet you, Paul. My name’s Kelly Cook. You can call me Kelly. I’m from Canada. A: Nice to meet you, too, Kelly. Canada is a beautiful country!

【Kim’s Note】This is a very casual and common way to greet someone. However, guys use this greeting to girls much more frequently than girls use it to guys. It is a little bit flirtatious because it sounds as though someone has just caught your eye for attention. But if you want to get a guy’s attention, I highly recommend this greeting! (2)Nice to meet you. I’m glad/pleased to meet you. 或Nice meeting you. Nice to meet you, too. (正式) 或Same here. A:I don’t think we’ve met before. My name’s Sam. 我叫山姆) B: No, I don’t think so either. Nice to meet you. I’m Ann. A:Hello! Are you a friend of Bill’s?
