What Is Halloween?

Halloween falls every year on 31st October. It is also known traditionally as ‘All Hallows’ Eve’ by Christians. This is because it falls the day before All Saint’s Day (1st November), when some people think about and pray for the people they know who have died. Not everyone agrees that Halloween should be celebrated. Some people think that it celebrates evil spirits and witchcraft.
To stay safe it is important that children always take an adult with them if trick or treating.

The lanterns were originally carved out of turnips in Ireland. Later, lots of Irish people went to live in America. They wanted to make lanterns but couldn’t find enough turnips, so carved pumpkins instead. Today people have fun carving all sorts of pictures into the pumpkins and using them as fun decorations.

A large container is filled with water, with apples floated on the surface. Players then try to catch an apple, using only their teeth. They are not allowed to use their hands to help them.
