A.Be familiar with.B.Be curious about.
Spring ended, and by then I had accumulated almost every type of electronic equipment I had always wished to have back home.
Then this new idea came to mind. I had heard about a man who traveled back home every few months. He drove a truck filled with boxes of new and used stuff that people were sending to relatives. So I told my father that I would send as many types of items as I could so that he could start his resale business.

C.Zero-emissions vehicles are popular.

7:The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run _________.
A.at least 25 miles B.more than 25 miles
It was back in 1981, and I saw many people gathered in someone’s front yard. As I went nearer to see what was happening I got my first introduction to yard sales. For the few dollars I had in my wallet, I was able to buy a seven-inch black-and-white portable TV. I also bought a flashlight.
In other words, those "zero-emissions" cars are likely coal-burning cars. Because the coal is burned somewhere else, it looks clean. It is not true. It's as if the California Greens are covering their eyes—“If I can't see it, it's not happening.”Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas(or another fuel)and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat--at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc.
B. the second TV set was color TV
C. the second TV set was very cheap
D. he wanted two TV sets very much
3. What did the author think of the“junk”he bought?
People in California love to talk about“zero-emissions(排放)vehicles”, but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity mes from. Power plants most all use fire to make it. Apart from the few people who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators(发电机). Generators are fueled by something--usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal(地热)plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.
The following weekend, at another yard sale, I saw a 14-inch color TV being sold for almost nothing. I felt I could not miss the offer and bought it. Now I had two sets and couldn’t wait to see what else I could afford the next weekend.
Three years later, when I visited my family for the first time since leaving home, I learned that many of the families in our neighborhood had a piece of“trash”. It proved that I had the responsibility to keep people back home up to date with the latest technology you no longer need.
