After graduating from high school, Neil went to study aeronautical engineering at Purdue University.Not long after finishing college, Neil joined the US Navy and became a test pilot. His job was to fly experimental planes and rockets to test their capabilities and safety. This was very dangerous work, but Neil was brave and an excellent pilot. During the Korean War, he flew 78 combat missions as a naval aviator.In 1962, Neil achieved his dream of becoming an astronaut when he was selected for NASA's Astronaut Group 2.
