When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice. What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

Missus Sommers one day found herself the unexpected owner of fifteen dollars. It seemed to her a very large amount of money. For a day or two,she walked around in a dreamy state as she thought about her choices. Her daughter Janie was wearing worn shoes and needed new ones. She would buy cloth for new shirts for the boys. Her daughter Mag should have another dress. And still there would be enough left for new stockings for her children. The idea about how to spend the dollars made her restless with excitement. On the day she planned to go shopping with the money, she ate a light meal---no!Between getting the children fed and the house cleaned, and preparing herself to go shopping, she forgot to eat at all! When she arrived at the large department store, she spotted a pile of silk stockings at the entrance. A sign nearby announced that they had been reduced in price. A young girl behind the counter asked her if she wished to examine the silky leg coverings. She smiled as if she had been asked to inspect diamond jewelry, and started to feel the soft, expensive items. Missus Sommers picked up a black pair and looked at them closely. Two red marks suddenly showed on her pale face. She looked up at the shop girl and said proudly,"Well, I will buy this pair.”Missus Sommers changed her cotton stockings for the new silk ones in the ladies' rest area. She had let herself be controlled by some machine-like force that directed her actions and freed her of responsibility. How good was the touch of the silk on her skin! Then she put her shoes back on and put her old stockings into her bag. Next, she went to the shoe department, where she tried on a pair of new boots. Her foot and ankle looked lovely. She could not believe that they were a part of herself.

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday. Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that's a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of hear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase (追赶).Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh. At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now. Paragraph 1:The car abruptly stopped in front of him._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2:A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived._______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________二、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

With shoulders shivering, her tears cannot help streaming down her face.

Be a story; Beyond a story.

Wrinkles of confusion spread across Holly ' s forehead as she unwrapped the gift from her best friend Susan. "I (I)thought you could use it for something." Susan's explanation did nothing to help usunderstand why a twelve-by-eighteen-inch dark blue carpet remnant (零料,布头)was being presented as a birthday gift.My heart went out to my daughter. Starting over at a new school had been a difficult adjustment. Until she met Susan , Holly had experienced little success making new friends. The whispered "thanks" was barely audible (听得见的) as Holly tried not to allow her disappointmentto show. She laid the carpet on the kitchen counter , and they headed outside to play. The extent ofHolly ' d s isappointment didn ' b t ecome evident until the following evening when she came downstairs to say good night. "Well , I guess we know how much my best friend thinks of me , huh, Mom ?" she said intears. "I ' m so sorry ,honey" was all I could manage to say.The next morning , I carried the kitchen rubbish outside. My heart sank as I lifted the lid of the trash can and saw Susan's carpet lying there. Hesitating only for a moment , I took it out and brought it into thehouse."Susan invited me to come over to her house tomorrow ," Holly announced as she arrived home fromschool a week later. Although her voice carried a so-what attitude , I sensed she was pleased by theinvitation. In spite of the number of times Susan had visited us , our invitations were never returned and itwould be the first time for Holly to go.The next day I drove Holly to the destination. A tall woman stood in the doorway to greet us. The house was shabby but neatly decorated with used furniture. From the chat with the woman we knew Susan had long been separated from her parents and that she was Susan's stepmother. A warm light shone in her eyes as she revealed to me her fondness for Susan. I came to respect this generous-hearted woman who had opened her home to a young girl and attempted to make a difference in her life.
