Miracle Plays.Miracle play or mystery play is a form of medieval drama that came from dramatization of the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church. It developed from the 10th to the 16th century, reaching its height in the 15th century. The simple lyric character of the early texts was enlarged by the addition of dialogue and dramatic action. Eventually the performance was moved to the churchyard and the marketplace.2. Morality Plays.A morality play is a play enforcing a moral truth or lesson by means of the speech and action of characters which are personified abstractions – figures representing vices and virtues, qualities of the human mind, or abstract conceptions in general.3. Interlude.The interlude, which grew out of the morality, was intended, as its name implies, to be used more as filler than as the main part of an entertainment. As its best it was short, witty, simple in plot, suited for the diversion of guests at a banquet, or for the relaxation of the audience between the divisions of a serious play. L'Allegre and IL Pens eroso (1632)are his early masterpieces, in which we find Milton a true offspring of the Renaissance, a scholar of exquisite taste and rare culture. Next came Comus, a masque. The greatest of early creations was Lycidas, a pastoral elegy on the death of a college mate, Edward King.(2)The second period is from 1641 to 1654, when the Puritan was in such complete ascendancy that he wrote almost no poetry. In 1641, he began a long period of pamphleteering for the puritan cause. For some 15 years, the Puritan in him alone ruled his writing. He sacrificed his poetic ambition to the call of the liberty for which Puritans were fighting.(3)The third period is from 1655 to 1671, when humanist and Puritan have been fused into an exalted entity. This period is the greatest in his literary life, epics and some famous sonnets. The three long poems are the fruit of the long contest within Milton of Renaissance tradition and his Puritan faith. They form the greatest accomplishments of any English poet except Shakespeare. In Milton alone, it would seem, Puritanism could not extinguish the lover of beauty. In these works we find humanism and Puritanism merged in magnificence.3. Metaphysical Poets and Cavalier Poets.1. Metaphysical PoetsThe term “metaphysical poetry” is commonly used to designate the works of the 17th century writers who wrote under the influence of John Donne. Pressured by the harsh, uncomfortable and curious age, the metaphysical poets sought to shatter myths and replace them with new philosophies, new sciences, new words and new poetry. They tried to break away from the conventional fashion of Elizabethan love poetry, and favoured in poetry for a more colloquial language and tone, a tightness of expression and the single-minded working out of a theme or argument.2. Cavalier PoetsThe other group prevailing in this period was that of Cavalier poets. They were often courtiers who stood on the side of the king, and called themselves “sons” of Ben Jonson. The Cavalier poets wrote light poetry,polished and elegant, amorous and gay, but often superficial. Most of their verses were short songs, pretty madrigals, love fancies characterized by lightness of heart and of morals. Cavalier poems have the limpidity of the Elizabethan lyric without its imaginative flights. They are lighter and neater but less fresh than the Elizabethan's.VI. John Dryden.1. Miracle Plays.Miracle play or mystery play is a form of medieval drama that came from dramatization of the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church. It developed from the 10th to the 16th century, reaching its height in the 15th century. The simple lyric character of the early texts was enlarged by the addition of dialogue and dramatic action. Eventually the performance was moved to the churchyard and the marketplace.2. Morality Plays.A morality play is a play enforcing a moral truth or lesson by means of the speech and action of characters which are personified abstractions – figures representing vices and virtues, qualities of the human mind, or abstract conceptions in general.3. Interlude.The interlude, which grew out of the morality, was intended, as its name implies, to be used more as filler than as the main part of an entertainment. As its best it was short, witty, simple in plot, suited for the diversion of guests at a banquet, or for the relaxation of the audience between the divisions of a serious play. 3、英国人的占领同时,大不列颠也被成群的海盗给侵略着。

他们是来自北欧的三个部落:盎格鲁人,撒克逊人和朱特人民族。

这三个部落在大不列颠海岸登路,把大不列颠人民赶到西部和北部,然后自己定居下来。

朱特人占领了岛屿东南部的肯特。

Interlude.The interlude, which grew out of the morality, was intended, as its name implies, to be used more as filler than as the main part of an entertainment. As its best it was short, witty, simple in plot, suited for the diversion of guests at a banquet, or for the relaxation of the audience between the divisions of a serious play. He sacrificed his poetic ambition to the call of the liberty for which Puritans were fighting.(3) The third period is from 1655 to 1671, when humanist and Puritan have been fused into an exalted entity. This period is the greatest in his literary life, epics and some famous sonnets. The three long poems are the fruit of the long contest within Milton of Renaissance tradition and his Puritan faith. They form the greatest accomplishments of any English poet except Shakespeare. In Milton alone, it would seem, Puritanism could not extinguish the lover of beauty. In these works we find humanism and Puritanism merged in magnificence.3. Metaphysical PoetsThe term “metaphysical poetry” is commonly used to designate the works of the 17th century writers who wrote under the influence of John Donne. Pressured by the harsh, uncomfortable and curious age, the metaphysical poets sought to shatter myths and replace them with new philosophies, new sciences, new words and new poetry. They tried to break away from the conventional fashion of Elizabethan love poetry, and favoured in poetry for a more colloquial language and tone, a tightness of expression and the single-minded working out of a theme or argument. 2. Cavalier PoetsThe other group prevailing in this period was that of Cavalier poets. They were often courtiers who stood on the side of the king, and called themselves “sons” of Ben Jonson. The Cavalier poets wrote light poetry, polished and elegant, amorous and gay, but often superficial. Most of their verses were short songs, pretty madrigals, love fancies characterized by lightness of heart and of morals. Cavalier poems have the limpidity of the Elizabethan lyric without its imaginative flights. They are lighter and neater but less fresh than the Elizabethan's.VI. John Dryden.1. 第一章:英国的组成
1、大不列颠人(英国人)
在开始学习英国文学史之前,了解一下英国这个民族是很必要的。

英国这个民族是一个混血族。

早期居住在这个岛上的居民是凯尔特人的一个部落,我们现在称它为大不列颠人。

大不列颠人把这个岛屿命名为大不列颠岛,凯尔特人是其原始居民。

他们分为几十个小部落,每个部落都以小屋群居为主。

"最古老的凯尔特人法律今天归结起来显示出氏族任然充满着生命力"。

英国人曾生活在部落社会。

2、罗马人的占领
在公元前55年,大不列颠岛被罗马征服者凯撒入侵,而这是的凯撒刚刚占领了高卢。

但是罗马人刚登上大不列颠岛海岸时,就遭到了在首领领导下的大不列颠人的狮子般疯狂的反击,随着罗马将领来来往往的这个世纪,直到公元78年英国从被于罗马帝国完全征服过。

伴随着罗马人的侵略占领,罗马式的生活方式也开始融入英国。

罗马式剧院和澡堂很快的在城镇中兴起。

而这些高雅的文明只不过是罗马侵略者的娱乐享受方式罢了,大不列颠人民却像奴隶一样被压迫着。

罗马人的占领持续了将近400年,在这期间,罗马人因其军事目的在岛上修建了后来被称之为罗马路的纵横交错的公路,这些公路在后期发展中起到了很大的作用。

沿着这些公路开始建立起大量的城镇,伦敦就是其中之一,开始成为重要的贸易中心城市。

罗马的占领也带来了基督教文化。

但是在15世纪初期,罗马帝国处于逐渐的衰落阶段。

公元410年,所有罗马军队撤回欧洲大陆再也没有返回。

因此,也标志这罗马人占领的结束。

3、英国人的占领
同时,大不列颠也被成群的海盗给侵略着。

他们是来自北欧的三个部落:盎格鲁人,撒克逊人和朱特人民族。

这三个部落在大不列颠海岸登路,把大不列颠人民赶到西部和北部,然后自己定居下来。

朱特人占领了岛屿东南部的肯特。

撒克逊人占领了岛屿南部地区,并建立起像韦塞克斯,埃塞克斯和东萨塞克斯这样的小王国。

盎格鲁人席卷了东部中部地区,并在东英吉利亚建立
王国。

七个像这样的王国在大不列颠岛上逐渐出现。

到公元7世纪,这些小王国开始合并成为今天称为英格兰的统一王国,或被称作盎格鲁人之国。

这三个部落的人混合在一起,被称为今天的英国人,而盎格鲁人占绝大多数。

他们说的三种方言自然而然的发展成为一种语言--盎格鲁撒克逊,或者古英语,和今天我们所说的英语有着很大的区别。

4、盎格鲁撒克逊人的社会状况
在盎格鲁撒克逊人定居在大不列颠之前,他们仍过着部落式生活。

家庭成员以亲属关系联合在一起,分别定居在不同的村落。

主要的战争乐团由年轻人组成,勇士们食用族长的食物与其分享战利品。

虽然说族长有权决定他子民的生死,但是将在外难免军令有所不受。

他熟悉他的每一个士兵,和他们一起吃喝玩乐。

这就是当时盎格鲁人称作为"氏族军事民主"。

在占领大不列颠后,盎格鲁撒克逊的社会形态发生了巨大的变化。

"我们知道,统治管理未屈服的人民是与非犹太人的法令相违背的…因此,非犹太人社会体系需要改革成为国家机关…首先,征服者代表必须是军事指挥官,被占领地区的内外安全需要加强指挥官的权利。

这样,军事领导权转变成君权的时刻到来。

一切以成定局。

因此,盎格鲁撒克逊时期见证了英国由部落社会向封建社会转变的过程。

5、盎格鲁撒克逊人的宗教信仰以及其影响
盎格鲁撒克逊人是异教徒。

他们信奉北欧的古老神话传说。

那就是为什么北欧神话学说在英语这门语言中留下痕迹的原因。

例如,一周中的天数就是由北神命名的。

奥丁,我们所说的神,星期三以他的名字命名,星期四以托尔的名字命名,美丽女神弗丽嘉,祈祷者以她的名字命名星期五。

星期二则是为了纪念另一个北欧之神--蒂乌。

盎格鲁撒克逊人受7个世纪基督教文化的影响,寺院在全国兴起。

在这些寺院中,只有极少数的和尚拥有读写能力,因此最早的英文书籍由他们记录下。

但是和尚憎恨异教徒书籍,因此他们给这些书添上基督教色彩,却和书的主要内容没有太大的关系。

第二章:贝奥武甫
1、盎格鲁撒克逊诗歌
英国文学始于盎格鲁撒克逊民族定居英格兰。

古英语文学仍然保留着5个遗迹,包括诗歌或歌曲,盎格鲁撒克逊的吟游诗人在宴会大厅里用他们来歌颂古时候首领和他的勇士们的英雄事迹。

其它四个是长篇诗歌的残余的一部
分。

但是,有一篇长达3000行的长篇诗歌,这就是英国人民的民族史诗--《贝奥武甫》。

2、贝奥武甫的故事
贝奥武甫是南部济兹国王哈吉拉可的外甥,丹麦日德兰人。

丹麦人国王王赫罗斯加有难的消息传到贝奥武甫那里。

王赫罗斯加建造了一座大厅,但是怪物戈兰德尔夜夜都侵扰这座大厅并每次带走国王的勇士,因而这座大厅就逐渐变的荒芜了。

当听到这个消息后,贝奥武甫带领14个随从向丹麦出发,决定帮助国王对付怪兽。

在受到接风洗尘后,贝奥武甫和他的同伴们在大厅里躺下,这时怪兽戈兰德尔出现了并吞食了贝奥武甫的一个同伴。

怪兽开始向贝奥武甫发起攻击,因为武器对怪兽不起作用,贝奥武甫便单手和怪兽扭打起来,经历了惨烈的徒手搏斗之后,戈兰德尔受到重伤并撤退,留下了一只手给贝奥武甫。

接下来,大厅又恢复到以往的生机,充满了欢声笑语,大家尽情的舞蹈歌唱。

但是,戈兰德尔的母亲因儿子重伤而死开始复仇,并劫走了王赫罗斯加的首席军师(顾问),贝奥武甫和他的同伴们沿着血迹来到了一个湖的边缘,这时,贝奥武甫纵身跳入湖中,找到女怪兽并跟着她来到水底大厅。

这绝望的战斗之下,贝奥武甫的剑毫无作用,他几乎陷入绝境,幸而抓住了一把古时巨人留下的一把巨剑,他奋力的砍下了女怪兽的头颅。

在这所大厅之中,贝奥武甫找到了戈兰德尔的遗体并同时砍下他的头颅。

带着这两样战利品,贝奥武甫回到丹麦国王的大厅,胜利的喜悦被盛宴,歌声,舞蹈给庆祝着,之后,贝奥武甫回到了家乡南部济兹。

贝奥武甫现在成为了国王,并统治了将近50年。

然而这时,一条火龙从他的密室里出现并向他的子民喷射火焰,这时的贝奥武甫已经是一个年迈的老人了,但是他毅然决然的告别了他的家人,带领11位随从开始追寻火龙。

同样的,贝奥武甫单手与火龙搏斗,剑再次不起作用,他被火焰团团围住。

虽然火龙最后被消灭了,但是贝奥武甫也受了重伤。

这篇史诗以英雄贝奥武甫的葬礼结尾:
"他被南部济兹全国人民哀悼,
英雄逝去,但的精神永存,
与世界上的国王相比,
他是如此的和蔼和受爱戴,
我们歌颂他的仁慈,热情和善良。

3、《贝奥武甫》内容分析
《贝奥武甫》是一部民间传奇,由盎格鲁撒克逊人从他们的大陆家乡带到英国。

在10世纪以诗歌的形式写下之前已经被传诵了几百年之久。

故事主要内容(与怪兽战斗)明显地是原始北部部落的民间传奇。

这样的部落沿欧洲西北海岸聚居。

在他们聚居地后面是一片不可能穿越的森林,在其聚居地前面是一片充满暴风的北海。

他们必须与野兽斗争,与恶劣、神秘、未知的自然环境做斗争。

当他们带着功勋远航回来时,勇士们就把生活在海底、沼泽地和内陆黑暗森林怪异的怪兽的故事一一讲述。

勇士们很勇敢但是也很迷信。

这就是了不起的《贝奥武甫》的背景。

贝奥武甫是一个伟大的英雄,他淡泊名利,坦诚的对待自己的人民,独自勇闯陌生土地去拯救他的人民。

面对死亡,他毫无惧色,只想着他人的利益。

虽然这首长诗写于10世纪,但是这位英雄毫无疑问的是原始大陆部落的产物。

这首叙事诗很可能是由吟游诗人从北部欧洲传诵而来然后在英国完成的。

他的手稿源于英国和爱尔兰历史,盎格鲁人提及《贝奥武甫》的历史意义,反映了古时部落社会的特征。

4、《贝奥武甫》的特征
诗歌形式最显著的特征是运用了头韵。

在头韵诗歌中,每行特定的重音字节都以相同的辅音开头。

一行中有四个重读音节,三个突显出头韵特征,可以从引文中看出。

《贝奥武甫》的其它特征是隐喻和轻描淡写并用。

像"赏赐"一次是国王的象征,"壁炉同伴"是他随从勇士的代名词,海用"天鹅浴"或"鲸路"代替,"海洋木头"则代表船。

这样的隐喻在诗中大量的出现。

轻描淡写则以"不麻烦"代替热烈欢迎,"不需赞扬"替代有谴责的权利,给人留下深刻的印象并添上了讽刺的幽默色彩。

这种品质常被认为是英语的永久性特征。
