2. Calm

1)adj. 平静的,镇静的;无风浪的;常用在keep,stay,remain等系动词的后面做表语。

2)v.冷静;使。。。。。。平静

① His gentle voice calmed me.他温柔的声音使我平静下来。

②The crying child soon calmed down.那哭闹的孩子很快安静下来.

Calm/quiet/still/silent

Calm指无风浪或人遇事镇定

She was very calm when I told her the news.

Quiet 指不吵闹或心情不烦的

Still指人或物体不运动 The kids found it hard to stay still.

Silent强调不讲话或没有声音 He choose to keep silent about the matter.

10.Let out放。。。。。。出去;释放;泄露

11.Make up

1)捏造,编造make up a story/ an excuse/a dialogue

2) 组成,形成

They make up one-third of the province's population. 他们占全省人口的三分之一。

(4) 化装,打扮

The actors were making up when we arrived.当我们到达的时候,演员们正在化妆。

(5) 补偿,弥补

They have made up for the loss. 他们己弥补了损失。

I have not worked this term,but I will make up for it next term.

这学期我没干什么,不过我要在下学期弥补上。

2)表示肯定的意思。这时too后面常常跟表示心情,态度或倾向性方面的的形容词,主要有anxious, eager, easy, glad,happy,pleased, easy,willing等。

They were too anxious to leave.他们急于要离开。

Can never be too..无论如何也不过分

1. The spaceship,called shenzhou V. was carrying China’s first astronaut, Yang Liwei.

Called 过去分词作定语,相当于which was called ShenzhouV.

现在分词和过去分词都可以作定语修饰名词,它们的区别主要表现在语态和时间关系上。

首先,在语态上不同:现在分词表示主动的意思,而过去分词多表示被动的意思。请比较:

1、surprising news 使人吃惊的消息

surprised listeners 吃惊的听众

2、an exciting movie 令人激动的电影

excited children 激动的孩子

3、The teacher told his students a lot of interesting stories. 老师给学生讲了许多有趣的故事。

She is interested in Chinese. 她对汉语感兴趣。

值得注意的是,有一些过去分词由不及物动词变来,它们只表示一个动作已完成,没有被动的意味。例如:fallen leaves 落叶(已经落下的树叶),the exploded bomb 已爆炸的炸弹a retired miner 退休的矿工,returned students 归国的留学生。

其次,时间关系上不同:一般来说,现在分词表示的动作往往正在进行,而过去分词所表示的动作往往已经完成。请比较:

1、the changing world 正在发生变化的世界

the changed world 已经变化了的世界

2、boiling water 正在开的水

boiled water 已经煮开过的水(可能是凉开水)

3、developing countries 发展中国家

developed countries 发达国家

He stood on the deck, pipe in mouth.
