We were lucky enough to spot massive bison just wandering across the roads and grassy fields. They looked like prehistoric beasts! Mom wasn't too thrilled about that close encounter!We also saw dozens of elk with their massive antlers. It's right near the Pacific Ocean and the border with Mexico. They had a whole section on dinosaurs that lived in the ocean too with books and models showing what they may have looked like. I also loved the Dinosaur 4-D movie we watched that made you feel like you were really there. When theT-Rex roared, the whole room would shake from the sound. So awesome!Speaking of awesome experiences, we also went to this place called LEGOLAND that was basically a gigantic playground and amusement park, but everything was made out of LEGOs! They had roller coasters, a giant LEGO castle, and all sorts of LEGO characters walking around that we could take pictures with. My favorite part was MINILAND though - it was like an entire city in miniature made from millions of LEGO bricks! They recreated famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, the Statue of Liberty, and even the Las Vegas strip all out of LEGOs. It was so detailed and realistic, you could spend hours just staring at it all.We also checked out the beach in San Diego which was beautiful. The water was a little chilly but we still went swimming and body surfing in the waves which was a blast. We saw pelicans and seagulls soaring overhead and walked along the shoreline looking for cool seashells. I even buried Dad in the sand when he wasn't looking - you should have seen the look on his face when he emerged as just a head sticking out of the beach!The most fun though was going to the amazing San Diego Zoo. We saw leopards, jaguars, and other big cats prowling up close at the Tiger Trail habitat. It's like being inside their underwater home. I pressed my face up to the tunnel and saw sharks, rays, and huge groupers just gliding past. A grouper is this humongous ugly fish with a mouth so big it could swallow my entire body in one bite! Good thing they're well-fed at the aquarium.Another amazing exhibit is the Ocean Explorer gallery which has the largest window to view ocean animals in the whole world. Our tour guide said the bright colors were caused by bacteria that can survive in the extremely hot temperatures. About every 90 minutes, Old Faithful would start rumbling and then FWOOOOSH a massive stream of boiling hot water would burst up like 180 feet into the sky! It was so awesome.While we were waiting for Old Faithful to erupt again, we walked around the area and saw all these other smaller geysers going off too. There were pools of bubbling mud that would occasionally burp and fling mud several feet into the air. Therewere also some fumaroles which were like geysers but they shoot out clouds of steam instead of water. The whole place smelled like rotten eggs from all the sulfur but it was still really cool.One of the most fun parts of Yellowstone though was seeing the wildlife. We were driving along the road one day and we had to stop because a massive hulk of a bison was just chillin' in the middle of the road! The park ranger said bison are pretty chill but you're not supposed to get too close because they can get cranky and charge you. You could ride a spinning disk and feel crazy forces pushing you. You could bend streams of water by charging them with electricity. They even had a miniature tornado machine and a huge Van de Graaff generator that makes your hair stand straight up with static electricity! My sister got such a bad case of static hair. We alsosaw a show in the physics theater all about temperature and how substances change state between solids, liquids and gases. They made a miniature cloud form inside the theater using liquid nitrogen and fog machines. Awesome!The nature and biology wing had tons of interesting live animal exhibits - a tropical rainforest environment with birds and butterflies, a New England forest area with deer, a shark tank, and even a swamp with alligators! They also had a huge dinosaur skeleton on display that was terrifying but mesmerizing.After that was the geology and paleontology area all about rocks, minerals, earthquakes, volcanoes and fossils. You could experience what an earthquake feels like on a shake table and see fluorescent rocks glow under black lights. So trippy!Finally, we went to the technology and innovation wing, which was definitely the most fun. You could try piloting a flight simulator, program little robots to run through mazes, design and test your own video games, and use cutting-edge tools like 3D printers and laser cutters. They even let you use enormous Tesla coils to conduct two million volt lightning storms! Insane!Everywhere you looked there were crazy contraptions to play with and experiment on. I could have spent days there without getting bored. I hardly got to experience half of whatthey had.
