This lead to the invention of the 2LA Series, which has been the backbone of the aluminum cylinder market for the past 13 years. 2LA Series innovations included new use of aluminum for endcaps and pistons , an externally-remov-able bronze gland and a unique extruded profile cylinder body . The result is a light-weight , low-cost , high performance package that pleased the eye.Atlas Cylinders, the pioneer in the design and development of the aluminum NFPA cylinder, con- tinues its innovation leadership with the release of the new 3MA Series .Atlas Cylinders has always been at the forefront of cylinder design. For medium duty applications, we per-ceived the need for a light-weight, low-cost air cylinder with great performance and sleek aesthetics.REDEFINING MOTIONDoing business with AtlasCylinders means that you always have the latest in technology to meet rapidly changing market and application demands . The 3MA Series represents the next generation solution for NFPA cylinder applications. The Next Generation NFPA Cylinder199420073MA3MA3MA Series NFPA CylinderNew Value for aCommon PlatformSuperior PerformanceResulting from efficient design, reduced weight, low friction andadvanced sealing technologyFlexible MountStandard mount accommodatesNFPA mounts as accessoriesSensor-ReadyMagnetic piston ring is standard.Sensors “drop-in” to grooves incylinder body for easy, inexpen-sive assembly and protectionSafetyRod lock version availableEnvironmentally FriendlyReduced noise from RoHS-compliant materials2-D and 3-D CAD FilesImmediately available at• Heads and caps are designed witha flexible mounting platform thatallows almost every NFPA mountto be fastened as an accessory.• Cylinder with mountingsattached at the factory are avail-able, or you may choose to installmountings from separate kits - it’syour choice.• Rod lock feature utilizes the 3MAstandard head for assembly.Flexible Mount3MA Series NFPA Cylinderminimize cylinder response time.• Composite inserts allow us to offer adjustable cushions at no additional cost.• Individual flow geometry for each bore size results in effective cush -ioning that is easy to adjust and set.• Floating check-seal design com-bines the sealing capability of a lipseal with check valve action for quick stroke reversal.• Cushioning performance is outstanding due to symmetrical piston geometry and long-lasting urethane seals.nificantly reduce inertia of moving parts and total cylinder weight.• Additional advantages include cushions as a standard feature, noise reduction without the need for bumpers, and lower friction than other materials.REDEFINING MOTION in Cylinder Design• Anodized aluminum alloy endcaps and cylinder body for high strength, corrosion resistance and low fric-tion.• Zinc plated steel endcapfasteners for tough environments.• Case hardened, hard chrome plat-ed and polished carbon steel piston rod for damage resistance, long rod seal life and low friction.• Outboard “Molythane” urethane rod wiper to remove external debris and adherents from the piston rod during the entire stroke.Proven Exterior Toughness3MA Series NFPA CylinderREDEFINING MOTION in Cylinder Designcomposite parts are classified as , which means they can also reduction by as much as 20 dB, specify bumper piston seals.Although the 3MA is perfectly suited for many applications, there is an occasional need for something different. To accommodate these demands, we designed the highly-versatile 4MA Series cylinder. The 4MA will provide the same fit as the 3MA, but its construction offers more flexibility for modification.General 4MA features include:• Available in 1½" – 8" bore sizes • Machined head and cap from ex-truded aluminum bar stock, black anodized for corrosion resistance • Externally removable bronze alloy gland/bearing for easy maintenance • Same piston rod assembly options and cylinder body as the 3MA • Oversize rods • RoHS compliantoptions:• Combination with the following as standard offerings:– HB slide packages to become guided cylinders (HBC/HBT/HBR/HBB)– “B” Series air valves as an air cylinder/valve combination unit (ACVB Option)– Bolt-On Linear Transducer for continuous piston rod position sensing (LPSO Option)– Rod lock (4MAJ Series)• Custom designs for endcaps, pistons, piston rods, mounts, etc.• Gland options, including the HI LOAD design for side load conditions and metallic rod wiper design• High temperature (to +250ºF) and low temperature (to -50ºF) construction• Hydraulic service to 400 PSIG (4ML)• And many, many more. Please see page 14 for a detailed list. For complete information of the 4MA Series, including how to order, please see pages 9 to 43.4MA - Designed for ModificationV3MA Series NFPA CylinderAdvancedManufacturingCylinders, by nature, are custom-ized products. Whether it is some-thing basic, such as stroke length,or something more complex, suchas a special head, raw materialand basic parts must be procuredand manufactured into componentsfor configured cylinders.Organizing cylinder production andassembly requires some degree ofplanning. To do so, without sacri-ficing customer service, requires asharp focus on advanced manufac-turing processes.Lean ManufacturingPrinciplesAtlas Cylinders has utilized LeanManufacturing techniques for manyyears, even before it was calledby name. Cellular Manufacturing,Value Stream Mapping, Kaizenevents, Kanban, One-Piece Flowand other influences are pervasivein our manufacturing processes. Wenow follow Lean Implementation tofocus all aspects of our operation onthe same goals for customer service. REDEFINING MOTION in Cylinder Technology3MA Series cylinders are manufac-tured in Akron, Ohio; Portland,Oregon; and Milton, Ontario.Location is a significant part of ourcustomer service model. We believethat customers value a domesticpresence, in different time zones, for many reasons. A few include:• Quick Delivery – standard leadtime is a few days, with the capa-bility of shipping some cylinderconfigurations within 24 hours. We deliver to your request.• Made-To-Order – we are able toquickly manufacture customizedproducts without the need to carryfixed finished goods inventory. This minimizes time-to-customerand cost-to-customer concerns.• Late-Day Orders – a West Coastpresence creates an order timeadvantage of three hours, whichmay be instrumental in keepingyou on schedule.• Non-Standard Designs – since50% of applications require cylin-ders that are not catalog-standard,we organized our entire culturefor flexibility. Our manufacturingprocesses are prepared to accom-modate non-standard designs withminimal lead-time adjustments.• Early Morning Service – anEastern US presence establishestimely customer service for theentire country.• Risk Management – the absenceof international risks when dealingwith suppliers from other conti-nents can help you sleep at night. Our goal is to offer you the bestproduct, on time, with your finan-cial concerns in mind.Made in U.S.A. and CanadaV3MA Series NFPA CylinderParker Hannifin Corporation Actuator DivisionWadsworth, Ohio USAVIAir Cylinders3MA/4MA SeriesCatalog AU03-AC0929/NAWarning / Offer of Sale© Copyright 2007 Parker Hannifin Corporation, All Rights ReservedOffer of SaleThe items described in this document are hereby offered for sale by The Company, its subsidiaries or its authorized distributors. See the detailed information on preventivemaintenance. If the product is not working properly, take it out of service and inspect it.If no detailed information about preventive maintenance is included, follow these general guide-lines:■Clean appropriate parts accurately■Replace any defective or worn partsATEX Certification InformationTemperatures■The maximum surrounding temperature for which the certification is valid is 40°C.■40°C is also the maximum allowed temperature of the compressed air when it enters the product.■If the product is installed in an equipment, the entire equipment has to correspond to the guidelines 2014/34/EU.■Make sure that the compressed air fulfil our quality demands (quality classes 2.4.3. and 3.4.4 respec-tively 3.5.4 acc. to ISO/DIS 8573-1:2010).■Do not exceed maximum pressure of 6.3 bar, or as stated on the product nameplate. Exceeding the operating pressure can increase the surface temperature due to higher rotating speed and the prod-uct can become an ignition source.ATEX Code DefinitionDescription6© Atlas Copco Industrial Technique AB - 9839 2144 01PZB15-L-AR500-11EN Product InformationEx ClassificationIf the product is part of an assembly where the components have different Ex classification, the compo-nent with the lowest level of safety defines the Ex classification of the complete assembly.Explosion Prevention GuidelinesCleanliness■Make sure the product is kept clean from dust and dirt to prevent increased bearing and surface tem-perature.■If using a silencer: Make sure a silencer with a filtering effect at the air outlet is installed to prevent any friction-heated particles entering into the surrounding atmosphere.Usage■Make sure the product is earthed to the equipotential bonding system of the workshop, for example through accessories such as hoses and air-pressure connections.■It is the responsibility of the user to make sure that the product and all possible accessories, such as wrenches and air connections, conform to the national safety regulations for equipment used in po-tentially explosive areas.© Atlas Copco Industrial Technique AB - 9839 2144 017Installation EN PZB15-L-AR500-118© Atlas Copco Industrial Technique AB - 9839 2144 01Installation RequirementsAir Quality■For optimum performance and maximum product life we recommend the use of compressed air witha maximum dew point of +10°C (50°F). We also recommend to install an Atlas Copco refrigeration type air dryer.■Use a separate air filter which removes solid particles larger than 30 microns and more than 90% ofliquid water. Install the filter as close as possible to the product and prior to any other air preparation units to avoid pressure drop. For impulse/impact tools make sure to use lubricators adjusted for these tools. Regular lubricators will add too much oil and therefore decrease the tool performance due to too much oil in the motor.Make sure that the hose and couplings are clean and free from dust before connecting to the tool. Both lubricated and lubrication free products will benefit from a small quantity of oil supplied from a lu-bricator.Compressed Air ConnectionWARNING Risk of severe injury Air under pressure can cause injury.►Always shut off the air supply when not in use or before any adjustments.►Drain the hose of air pressure and disconnect the tool from air supply when not in use or before any adjustments.►Always use the correct hose size and air pressure for the tool.WARNING Compressed AirHigh air pressure can cause severe damage and bodily injury.►Do not exceed maximum air pressure.►Make sure that there are no damaged or loose hoses or fittings. For correct air pressure and hose size, see the Technical Product Data on - https:// or .Make sure that the hose and couplings are clean and free from dust before connecting to the tool.PZB15-L-AR500-11EN Installation© Atlas Copco Industrial Technique AB - 9839 2144 019Shaft Load DiagramShaft Load■Make sure that the maximum shaft load is not exceeded, in order to prevent an excessive increase ofthe bearing temperature.Installation InstructionsConnecting the Air SupplyWhen the compressed air supply is connected to the inlet, the direction of rotation will be as shown in the figure below. If the exhaust air is to be piped away, a hose should be connected to the exhaust outlet. The compressed air supply should be connected to the corresponding inlet for desired rotation direction, see figure below. The inlet that is not in use, functions as a main outlet and must not be plugged.Ais for ventilation only and must not be plugged.Installation EN PZB15-L-AR500-1110© Atlas Copco Industrial Technique AB - 9839 2144 01PZB15-L-AR500-11EN OperationErgonomic GuidelinesConsider your workstation as you read through this list of general ergonomic guidelines and see if you canidentify areas for improvement in posture, component placement, or work environment.■Take frequent breaks and change work positions frequently.■Adapt the work area to your needs and the work task.■Adjust for convenient reach range by determining where parts or tools should be located to avoid static load.■Use workstation equipment such as tables and chairs appropriate for the work task.■Avoid work positions above shoulder level or with static holding during assembly operations.■When working above shoulder level, reduce the load on the static muscles by reducing the weight of the load. You can also reduce the load on the static muscles by holding the load close to thebody.■Make sure to take frequent breaks.■Avoid extreme arm or wrist postures, particularly for operations requiring a degree of force.■Adjust for convenient field of vision by minimizing movement of the eyes and head during the work task.■Use the appropriate lighting for the work task.■Use ear protection equipment in noisy environments.■Use dust extraction system or mouth protection mask in dusty environments.Operating InstructionsHot SpotsThe following hot spots on the motor can reach high temperatures during operation.■Seal ring at the output shaft■CasingThe highest temperatures occur when the motor is running at maximum allowed speed. With increasingtorque, the air motor reduces the rotational speed and the temperature.Keep below the Maximum Free Speed, see marking on the product or the product specific Safety In-formation.© Atlas Copco Industrial Technique AB - 9839 2144 0111Operation EN PZB15-L-AR500-1112© Atlas Copco Industrial Technique AB - 9839 2144 01PZB15-L-AR500-11EN ServiceMaintenance InstructionsService RecommendationsPreventive maintenance is recommended at regular intervals.
