During a winter storm in 1919, one dog managed to save the lives of the people on the ship Ethie. Today, people still tell the story of the dog.
In December 1919, Ethie was travelling along the coast of northern Canada. Without warning, the ship ran into a bad storm. Because of high winds and heavy snow, the captain could not tell where he was going. Sailing too close to the shore (岸), the ship could not move because of some rocks. Ethie was in danger.
The captain decided to save the people on his ship. He thought it was too dangerous to try to reach the shore by lifeboat, so he sent up flares (闪光信号) to call for help. People saw the flares and rushed to the beach. The crew (船员) tried to throw a rope (绳子) to them, but there seemed to be no way to get a rope to the shore.
In the early 1900s ships often carried a large kind of dog called a Newfoundland. Newfoundlands are excellent swimmers. During sea journeys, Newfoundlands would bring back things that had fallen off the ship or even save people from the sea.
The Newfoundland on Ethie was named Tang. The captain decided that Tang offered their best hope of survival (幸存). He gave the dog a long rope. Holding the rope between his teeth, Tang jumped into the turbulent water. He fought his way through high waves and strong winds. Finally he reached the beach.
The people on the shore took the rope. The rope became the ship?s lifeline.
Because of Tang, all the people on Ethie landed on the beach safely. He was given a special medal for being a hero. Tang wore the medal for the rest of his life.

Father of American musical theatre -Jerome Kern
Jerome Kern is considered as the father of American musical theatre (戏剧). Kern is remembered for the hundreds of songs he wrote for musical plays and films. Jerome Kern was born into a middle-cla ss family in New York City in 1885. Jerome?s mother, Fanny, loved the piano. She began to teach Jerome how to play the piano when he was very young.
Jerome was a quiet boy but not a top student. When he completed high school, his father said he would have to work in the family?s store. But he later came to believe that Jerome might do better in music than in business. So he let the boy go to Europe to study music, as almost all young musicians did at that time.
Jerome Kern began his career as a songwriter in theatres in London and New York City. Success came quickly. By the early 1920s, Kern was a successful young composer for Broadway musical comedies. In one three-year period alone, he wrote music for nineteen shows.
However, Kern wanted to try something completely new. He thought a musical play should be a real work of art, not just a collection of songs and dances. Kern wanted to do a truly American musical, with real American characters and real situations.
In 1927, he found the story he wanted. It was the book Show Boat by American writer Edna Ferber. The story of Show Boat took place in the 1880s on a passenger steam boat that travelled along the Mississippi River. The story was made into the greatest musical play by Kern. Although Kern died in 1945 at the age of sixty, Show Boat has been performed thousands of times all over the world.
