Sonnet is a very important form of English metrical poetry. It has 14 lines written to a regular rhyme scheme. Sonnet was invented by the Italian poet, Francesco Petrarch in the early 14th century. Sonnet makes it easier to express deep thought and emotion. In English poetry, there are three types of sonnet: the Italian, the Shakespearean and the Spenserian. These three types of sonnet all consist of 14 lines, but the rhyme schemes are different.

The Cenci was a five-act tragedy based on the history of a 16th-century Roman family, and The Mask Of Anarchy was a political protest which was written after the Peterloo massacre大屠杀. In 1822 the Shelley household moved to the Bay of Lerici. There Shelley began to write The Triumph Of Life.

莎士比亚主要作品英文赏析

The revolutionary rebellious young Shelley was influenced by all the revolutionary and ideas of this time, Through Mab, he announced that “there is no God!” What he visualized was an ideal society under the rule of the goddess Necessity. In it humanity would return to its natural condition of good-ness and freedom.
To him the emancipation of mankind could only be won “by resolute perseverance and in-courage, and the systematic efforts of generations of men of intellect and virtue”

Poetry1THE POETRY OF DRESSRobert Herrick (1591-1674)A sweet disorder in the dressKindles in clothes a wantonness:--A lawn about the shoulders thrownInto a fine distraction,--An erring lace, which here and thereEnthrals the crimson stomacher,--A cuff neglectful, and therebyRibbons to flow confusedly,--A winning wave, deserving note,In the tempestuous petticoat,--A careless shoe-string, in whose tieI see a wild civility,--Do more bewitch me, than when artIs too precise in every part.

Percy Bysshe Shelley

• The first section is fairly straightforward with constant references to death, corpses and destruction that Shelly uses as a metaphor for autumn. The allusion to disease and darkness describes the West Wind in this first section. • Shelly sees it as a sort of 'grim reaper' but seems to come back from the whole topic by also calling it the "preserver".

•In the first stanza, the autumn wind scatters dead leaves and seeds on the forest soil, where they eventually fertilize the earth and take root as new growth. Both "Destroyer and Preserver," the wind ensures the cyclical regularity of the seasons. These themes of regeneration and the interconnectedness of death and life, endings and beginnings, runs throughout "Ode to the West Wind."

Shelley is one of the leading Romantic poets, an intense and original lyrical poet in the English language.
Like Blake, he has a reputation as a difficult poet: erudite, imagistically complex, full of classical and mythological allusions.

Ode to the West Wind: Notes
❖ This poem was conceived and chiefly written in a wood that skirts the Arno, near Florence, and on a day when the tempestuous wind, whose temperature is at once mild and animating, was collecting the vapours which pour down the autumnal rains. They began, as I foresaw, at sunset with a violent tempest of hail and rain, attended by that magnificent thunder and lightning peculiar to the Cisalpine regions.
After Harriet Shelley's suicide in 1816, Shelley and Mary officially married.
The following year Shelley and Mary left England and settled in Italy.
