常熟市位于中国经济最活跃的区域——上海经济圈中心，东倚上海，南接 苏州，西邻无锡，北枕长江与南通隔江相望，具有得天独厚的区位优势。近20 年经济增长一直保持在15%以上，综合实力显著增强。特别是近几年来，外向 型经济发展迅猛，投资环境不断改善。截至2003年10月，累计批准外商投资 企业1732家，总投资133.5亿美元，注册外资50.2亿美元。 一、开发区成 为外资投入的高度聚集区。 全市现有一个国家级开发区常熟经济技术开发 区，一个国家级大学科技园常熟国家大学科技园，及一个省级开发区常熟东南 经济开发区和3个市级开发区。这些开发区基础配套设施完备，功能定位合理， 区域特色明显，到2007年10月，已有332家外商投资企业落户，注册外资32.5 亿美元，占全市总量的65%。

常熟旧有虚廓园、水吾园两处私家园林，俗称曾园、赵园。后经修缮， 两园合二为一，称曾赵园。现为江苏省文物保护单位。园内以水景见长， 亭台楼榭布局错落，更借景虞山，风致卓绝。
