AA German company was concerned about talks in Moscow trying to sell some 100 million dollars worth of equipment to a Russian State company. Talks went smoothly but differences remained. So Martin Bayer himself, the CEO of the German Company, decided to come to Moscow to head the talks. Besides caring about his business, the CEO wanted to go to Russia to hunt bears.Martin Bayer was one of the greatest hunters of our time (and the Russians knew about it). He went to the Sahara more than hundred times and hunted lions, crocodiles; he hunted polar bears in the North Pole and tigers in the rain forests of India. But he had never hunted Russian bears. So the Russians decided to organize a bear hunt for Mr. Bayer to sweeten the talks. This wasn't a simple task. Some people in the west still believe that bears may be found and seen everywhere in Russian cities just like squirrels may be seen in our back yards. This is not true. The closest place one may find bears in the wild is maybe 2,500 miles away from Moscow. However, a solution was quickly found. The Russian businessmen went to Moscow Circus(马戏团)and for $2,000 bought a very old bear. This bear used to amuse and amaze audiences in many countries for 30 years, but got and looked too old, and was retired.“Be careful, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening,” they told to Mr. Bayer. “If compared to the Russian bears, your African lions are nothing more than harmless cats.” The bear was brought to a forest 50 miles from Moscow and was left there. Mr. Bayer was told that bears were plentiful in that forest and that many cattle and even people had been eaten in the surrounding villages.Meanwhile, an 18-year old female drove through the forest on a motorcycle and suddenly saw a bear (no bears had been seen in those places for 200 years). She was frightened, fell, left her helmet and her motorcycle and ran away.Mr. Bayer was excited and ready to hunt. This could become the most successful part of his extraordinary hunting experience. The next moment Mr. Bayer saw a bear in a helmet driving on a motorcycle through the forest in front of him. The bear had a happy expression on his face, as he was doing something he had been doing in the circus for 30 years: circling on a motorcycle!Mr. Bayer lives in a private mental institution near Hamburg happily ever after. The equipment was never sold to Russia. It was sold to Iraq instead.21. Why did the Russians invite Mr. Bayer to hunt bears?A. Russian bears are famous for their cruelty.B. They managed to find a bear for hunting.C. They expected the trade to be successful.D. There was a bear in Moscow Circus.22. Why did the Russians say “Be carefu l, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening”?A. To tell Mr. Bayer that many people had been killed by bears.B. To make Mr. Bayer feel the hunting really challenging.C. To warn Mr. Bayer to mind his safety while hunting.D. To tell Mr. Bayer that the bear is really dangerous.23. We can infer from the last paragraph that __________.A. Mr. Bayer has gone madB. the bear injured him badlyC. he has worked in a mental institution since thenD. the trade has gone smoothly between Russian and IraqBMy son has poliomyelitis (小二麻痹症) and he suffered from it a lot. When he was young, my wife and I took him to see so many doctors and got different kind oftreatments. But still, he couldn’t walk like a normal kid.So he was laughed at by his classmates for his walking style and he was very sad. Then he became afraid of going to school. He wouldn’t go anymore. One night, my wife had a breakdown and shouted at him, “I tell you, my kid, you might be like this forever. You are a freak in other’s eyes, and perhaps it would never change. But in my eyes, in your dad’s eyes, you are not a freak! You are not! Even if you are, we love you and will love you forever!” My son spoke nothing for two days. He didn’t eat or sleep. We could read he was hurt. We hoped something[ wonderful would fall in our family. On the third morning, he struggled to walk to my car, with his school bag in his hand of course. He raised his head high and hugged me, saying “I want to go to school. Nothing will beat me.”You know, from then on, he was never afraid of being laughed at any longer. If he couldn’t avoid these looks, he chose to look at them i n the eyes. Later, something nice really happened and my son went to Harvard University. When he was asked how he managed to bear the p ressure, he said, “Because of my parents.”My dear fellows, if you care too much about how other people look at you or what their opinions are, you will never become what you want to be.29. The boy owed his success to his parents and was grateful to them32. From the passage we can say that the boy is _________________.A. confident and outgoingB. brave and hard-workingC. wise and easy-goingD. determined and braveCWith the development of science and technology, new inventions, especially new electronic products, have made people’s lives easy and convenient. But as the saying puts: A coin has two sides. One day, I was walking in the park with a friend and his cell phone rang, interrupting our conversation. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and…I became invisible, absent from the conversation. The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent. Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a tragedy to the closeness of human interaction. With email and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine. As almost every contact we can imagine between human beings gets automated, the alienation(疏远) index goes up. You can't even call a person to get the phone number of another person any more. Directory assistance is almost always fully automated.Pumping petrol at the station? Why say good morning to the attendant when you can swipe(刷)your credit card at the pump and save yourself the bother of human contact?Making a deposit at the bank? Why talk to a teller who might live in the neighborhood when you can just insert your card into ATM?Pretty soon you won’t have the burden of making eye contact at the grocery shop. Some supermarket chains are using a self-scanner so you can check yourself out, avoiding those check-out people who look at you and ask how you are doing.I am not against modern technology. I own a cell phone, an ATM card, a voice mailsystem, and an email account. Giving them up isn't wise…they're a great help to us. It's some of their possible consequences that make me feel uneasy.More and more, I find myself hiding behind e-mail to do a job meant for conversation. Or being relieved that voice mail picked up a call because I didn't really have time to talk. The communications industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier. So I've put myself on technology restriction: no instant messaging, with people who live near me,no cell phoning in the presence of friends, no letting the voice mail pick up when I'm at home.32. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A. The Advance of Communications TechnologyB. The Consequences of Modern TechnologyC. The Process of Communications RevolutionD. The Automation of Modern Communications33. Paragraphs 5 to 7 are listed as examples, which show that the use of modern communications is ___________.A. encouragingB. disappointingC. satisfyingD. embarrassing34. The passage implies that _______________.A. modern technology is bridging the peopleB. modern technology is separating the peopleC. modern technology is developing too rapidlyD. modern technology is interrupting our lives35. What does the writer think to do with the modern technology?A. We may use them no matter what others are doing.B. We can throw them away and return to the ancient.C. We can be far away from them forever.D. We can use them less and communicate with the people around us.DI was 16 when my father finally decided he would send me to wilderness camp for several months. He had threatened to do it many times before, but my mother had alwaysmanaged to prevent him from doing so. This time he insisted on doing it.The latest incident was the last straw. Impulsively(冲动地), I had pushed Mr. Ford, my math teacher, down a flight of steps at school. He broke his arm in two places. Anyway, he had agreed not to accuse me as a favor to my dad, who was in the middle of a tight race for sheriff(执法官) in our town. But my reckless behavior had my dad’s closest advisor talking.“John, he’s your son and he’s a kid, but he is dragging you down,” I heard Jake Hutch tell my dad through his closed office door the night after I pushed Mr. Ford. “If you can’t make your son o bey the rules, how can you make the law obeyed in this town?”So, off to Pisgah National Forest I went. I imagined hours of untold abuse at the hands of some strong sergeants(军士). I was determined no to be broken. I was who I was.Nearly every day for six months, a small group of other troubled teens and I carried our 30-pound backpacks on a difficult journey covering about 10 miles. We hiked in a rough wilderness that seemed untouched by civilization. Our sergeants were firm but kind, not frightening as I had imagined. We learned how to make a fire without matches and create a shelter with branches and grass. We learned which plants were safe to eat out in the wild. I felt myself change. I was calm and often reflective. My old, impulsive self was gone. One morning, six months later, my dad came to pick me up. I ran to hug him and saw relief and love in his eyes.“So what’s it like being sheriff?” I asked on the ride home.“I lost the race, Danny,” he said.“I’m sorry, Dad.” I knew my behavior probably had a lot to do with the defeat.Dad squeezed my shoulder and brought me close. “As long as I don’t ever lose you, I’m okay.”24. We are taught at home and at school that using violence is the least civilized (文明的) way to solve problems. For example, last week I thought about hitting my friend for winning a beautiful shell while we were playing at the beach.I talked with him instead and we came to anagreement. If two adults had a disagreement, and if they used violence towards each other in order to win, is it all right? When two countries disagree, they often fight a war. Why is using violence not okay at home, at school, or in your country but okay between countries? So many people have been killed because of wars, not only soldiers butordinary people, even small children and babies. And refugees (难民) exist, too.A war is a great violence, like two people fighting over a shell, just much bigger. Adults say they are fighting wars in order to solve problems and make peace. But can you really “make peace” by killing so many people?I don’tthink bombs (炸弹) can reach people’s hearts and change them. Bombs can’tcreate love and caring, and that’s what we need in the world. Why do adults use violence so quickly? Why can’t they use their wisdom and talk it over?Adults might say that things are not that easy. But they are the ones that teach us to be kind, not to hurt people, and not to kill. W hy don’t they act as what they say?---A page from a 12-tear-old boy, Joshua’s diary.36. It was to be performed on a twenty-one week old fetus (胎儿)in uterus(子宫)at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. At that time, in 1999, twenty-one weeks in uterus was the earliest that the surgical team would consider for surgery. The worst possible outcome would be that the surgery would cause premature delivery, and no child born earlier than twenty-three weeks had survived. The tension could be felt in the operating room as the surgery began.A typical C-section cut was made to access the uterus, which was then lifted out and laid at the junction of the mother’s thighs(大腿). The entire procedure would take place within the uterus, and no part of the child was to breach the surgical opening. During the procedure, the position of the fetus was adjusted by gently moving the outside of the uterus. The entire surgical procedure on the child was completed in one hour and thirteen minutes. When it was over, the surgical team breathed a sigh of relief, as did I.As a doctor asked me what speed of film I was using, out of the corner of my eye I saw the uterus shake, but no one’s hands were near it. It was shaking from within. Suddenly, an entire arm thrust out of the opening, then pulled back until just a little hand was showing. The doctor reached over and lifted the hand, which reacted and squeezed the doctor’s finger. As if testing for strength, the doctor shook the tiny fist. Samuel held firm. I took the picture! Wow! It happened so fast that the nurse standing next to me asked, “What happened?” “The child reached out,” I said. “Oh. They do that all the time,” she responded. The surgical opening to the uterus was closed and the uterus was then put back into the mother and the C-section opening was closed. It was ten days before I knew if the picture was even in focus(对焦). To ensure no digital manipulation(篡改) of images before they see them, USA Today requires that film be submitted unprocessed. When the photo editor finally phoned me he said, “It’s the most incredible picture I’ve ever seen.”【小题1】What may be the best title for the passage?A. An Amazing MomentB. A Pitiful FetusC. An Honorable Job as a PhotographerD. An Impressive Surgeon 【小题2】 In 1999, people believed that it was ________.A. possible for a fetus 21 weeks born to surviveB. li kely for a fetus born 21 weeks to be come abnormalC. right time for a fetus born 21 weeks to receive an operationD. risky for a fetus 21 weeks in uterus to receive an operation【小题3】From the second paragraph, we can see that the surgery was ________.A. challenging but successfulB. demanding and unsuccessfulC. simple and shortD. long-lasting and difficult 【小题4】The underlined “It” in paragraph 3 refers to ________.A. the uterusB. the arm of the fetusC. the pictureD. the head of the fetusBMany cities have subways and underground public transportation to take locals and tourists alike rapidly around the city. However, there’s something different about riding a London subway. It may not look different, but the historical value of one of England’s most popular forms of transportation is enough to make riding the subway a must when visiting London. With a little under 300 different stations, the subway can take you almost anywhere you need to go.Riding a London subway, a person from other countries will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That’s not rudeness ―people are just toobusy to bother looking.Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the t ime for a moment of quiet thinking.Nor are they reading a book.New technology has replaced quiet habits.Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(使用月票上下班者).Since the launch of the iPhone in 2020, over 40,000―yes, that’s 40,000 “apps” have been designed.Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillers.One “app”, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks.Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination.iSteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “steam” on your phone screen. For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣)of choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music-iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages. And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you occupied, then perhaps you would prefer a film? The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV shows or films on the way to work. With all these distractions, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train.CI was sitting in the room reading when I heard a loud noise. To defend my home from break-in, I picked up my defense weapon--- a broom and went out. There on the roof of my porch(门廊), I saw a grey fluffy squirrel. I drove her away with the broom, but the next day I heard her again.I searched squirrels on the net and found because their teeth keep growing, they have to constantly chew on things to shorten their teeth. This was disturbing so I asked my husband to call in some wildlife control people. On Monday morning two men showed up, with guns in their hands. I pointed uneasily to the hole in my porch roof. They held up their guns. Suddenly I saw in my mind the baby nursery inside. I stopped them and confirmed that they wouldn’t harm her. They hesitated, but finally put down their g uns. Then they brought out a bottle of deodorizer(除臭剂)and sprayed it into the squirrel’s home. They told me she would not like the smell and would leave. There was no sign of Mrs. Squirrel, so they blocked the hole, took my cheque for $250 and left. Shortly after they left, Mrs. Squirrel returned from her shopping trip. She was mad at being driven out and began feverishly clawing at the porch roof. In order to stop the destruction of my home, I drove her away with the broom again. Each day thereafter, Mrs. Squirrel continued her attack on my possession. I then called the company to report that “SHE’S BAAAAAACK…” The receptionist said that if Mrs. Squirrel had managed to find another way into my porch roof, it would be a new charge. I replied I couldn’t c ontinue contributing my husband’s hard-earned income to their silly wildlife experts and hang up.I went to the porch and banged on the roof. Mrs. Squirrel came outand glared at me. We negotiated some terms, came to an agreeable arrangement and went back into our respective homes. All is quiet these days, although large quantities of materials have been removed from my garage wall and my daughter claims that some of her doll-house furniture has disappeared. I still hope that Mrs. Squirrel would leave, but I will wait until it is warmer and hopefully until after the birth of the little ones.【小题1】What did the author think of the squirrel at first? A.Troublesome. B.Dangerous. C.Interesting. D.Clever. 【小题2】Why didn’t the author ask the wildlife con trol people to come again? A.She worried about the safety of the squirrel.B.She thought the company charged too much.C.She decided to drive away the squirrel herself.D.She doubted the ability of the wildlife control people.【小题3】What can we learn from the passage?A.Getting rid of the squirrel needs patience.B.The squirrel has destroyed the author’s house.C.The author has developed affection for the squirrel.D.The author singed an agreement with Mrs. Squirrel.。

MoreoverAEver since they were first put on the market in the early 1990s, genetically modified ( 转基因) foods have been increasingly developed and marketed in many countries in the world, mainly on the basis of their promise to end the worldwide food crisis. But can GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would, is it the best solution?Despite what it promises, GM technology actually has not increased the production potential of any crop. In fact, studies show that the most widely grown GM crop, GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, a report that analyzed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.Something else, however, has been on the rise. While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides (杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. "The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But neither is true." said Bill Christison, Presidentof the US National Farm Coalition. At the same time, the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution(分配) and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report. As a matter of fact, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops havelittle to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which "green" farming is supposed to be the first choice.36.The author develops the second paragraph mainly ________.A. by classificationB. by comparisonC. by examplesD. by supposition (37.What does the underlined word "boost" in the third paragraph probably mean?A. Control.B. EvaluateC. Obtain.D. Increase.38.GM companies promise farmers that they will benefit from________.A. practicing "green" farmingB. use of less chemicalsC. fair distribution of their cropsD. using more crops for fuel39.Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards GM technology?A. Optimistic.B. Defensive.C. Disapproving.D. Pessimistic.BThroughout the history of the arts, the nature of creativity has remained constant to artists. No matter what objects they select, artists are to bring forth new forces and forms that cause change-to find poetry where no one has ever seen or experienced it before.Landscape(风景) is another unchanging element of art. It can be found from ancient times through the 17th-century Dutch painters to the 19th-century romanticists and impressionists. In the 1970s Alfred Leslie, one of the new American realists, continued this practice. Leslie sought out the same place where Thomas Cole, a romanticist, had produced paintings of the same scene a century and a half before. Unlike Cole who insists on a feeling of loneliness and the idea of finding peace in nature, Leslie paints what he actually sees. In his paintings, there is no particular change in emotion, and he includes ordinary things like the highway in thebackground. He also takes advantage of the latest developments of color photography(摄影术) to help both the eye and the memory when he improves his painting back in his workroom.Besides, all art begs the age-old question: What is real? Each generation of artists has shown their understanding of reality in one form or another. The impressionists saw reality in brief emotional effects, the realists in everyday subjects and in forest scenes, and the Cro-Magnon cave people in their naturalistic drawings of the animals in the ancient forests. To sum up, understanding reality is a necessary struggle for artists of all periods.Over thousands of years the function of the arts has remained relatively constant. Past or present, Eastern or Western, the arts are a basic part of our immediate experience. Many and different are the faces of art, and together they express the basic need and hope of human beings.40. The underlined word “poetry” most probably means __________.A. an object for artistic creationB. a collection of poemsC. an unusual qualityD. a natural scene41. Leslie's paintings are extraordinary because .A. they are close in style to works in ancient timesB. they look like works by 19th-century paintersC. they draw attention to common things in lifeD. they depend heavily on color photography42. What is the author's opinion of artistic reality?A. It will not be found in future works of art.B. It does not have a long-lasting standard.C. It is expressed in a fixed artistic form.D. It is lacking in modern works of art.43. What does the author suggest about the arts in the last paragraph?A. They express people's curiosity about the past.B. They make people interested in everyday experience.C. They are considered important for variety in form.D. They are regarded as a mirror of the human situation.CMini Book Excerpts(节选)BiographyWhen Salinger learned that a car park was to be built on the land, the middle-aged writer was shocked and quickly bought the neighboring area to protect it… The townspeople never forgot the rescue and came to help their most famous neighbor.J. Others had cokes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids'. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would merely be content with black marks. None of us was allowed the measure of being a dropout. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I'm now trying to bring up my three children. I'm filled with pride when my children think I am mean because nowI thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world. 48.From the passage we can learn that the writer's mother was______.A.not generous at allB.very strict with her childrenC.very mean with money mattersD.very cruel to her children49.Which of the following things did the writer hate to do most?A.Eating differently from other kids.B.Wearing clean clothes made by mother.C.Going to bed early and getting up early.D.Letting mother know where they were.50.It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A.the writer worked hard and got good grades in studiesB.mother was punished for breaking the Labor LawC.all the other kids studied better than the writerD.the writer's family lived a miserable lifeA major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. Travelling with their baby daughter, they flew on to Cairns in Australia which was then struck by one of the most tremendous tonadoes in the nation's history. From there, the couple, in their 20s, were forced to shelter for 24 hours on the cement floor of a shopping centre with 2,500 others. "Trees were being knocked over and big branches were scattered across the streets," Mr Svanstrom told Sweden's Express newspaper. "We escaped by the skin of our teeth," said Svanstrom. They then headed south to Brisbane but the city was experien cing massive flooding, so they crossed the country to Perth where they narrowly escaped raging bush fires. The couple then flew to Christchurch, New Zealand, arriving just after a massive magnitude 6.3 earthquake destroyed the city on February 22. Mrs. Svanstrom said, "When we got there the whole town was a war zone." "We could not visit the city since it was completely blocked off, so instead we travelled around before going to Japan." But days after the Svanstroms arrived, Tokyo was rocked by Japan's largest earthquake since records began. "The trembling was horrible and we saw roof tiles fly off the buildings," Mr. Svantrom said. "It was like the buildings were swaying back and forth."The family returned to Stockholm on March 29,2011 after a much calmer visit to their last destination China. But Mr. Svanstrom, who also survived the destructive Boxing Day tsunami that hit southeast Asia in 2004, said the marriage was still going strong. He added, "I know marriages have to endure some trials, but I think we have been through most of them." "We've certainly experienced more than our fair share of catastrophes, but the most important thing is that we're together and happy." Mrs. Svantrom added: “ To say we were unlucky with theweather doesn’t really cover it! It’s so absurd that now we can only laugh.”【小题1】How many countries did the couple visit during their honeymoon?A. 6.B. 5.C. 4.D. 3.【小题2】What's the right order of the following things according to the passage?a.
