(60 points)Directions: there are 6 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C,D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on your answer sheet .Passage oneYou never see them, but they're with you every time you fly. They record where you're going, how fast you're traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally. Their ability to withstand almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic book. They're known as the black box. When planes fall from the sky, as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean June 30, 2018, the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong. So when a French submarine (潜水艇) detected the device's homing signal five days later, the discovery marked a huge step toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152 passengers were killed. In 1958, Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic information like altitude and direction. That was the first model for a black box, which became a requirement on all US commercial flights by 1960. Early models often failed to withstand crashes, however, so in 1965 the device was completely redesigned and moved to the rear of the plane—the area least subject toimpact—from its original position in the landing wells That same year, the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes, which were never actually black, be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility.Modern airplanes have two black boxes: a voice recorder, which tracks pilots' conversations, and a flight-data recorder, which monitors fuel levels, engine noises and other operating functions that help investigators reconstruct the aircraft's final moments. Placed in an insulated (隔绝的) case and surrounded by quarter-inch-thick panels of stainless steel, the boxes can withstand massive force and temperatures up to 2 000°F. When submerged, they're also able to emit signals from depths of 20 000 ft. Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447, which crashed near Brazil on June 1, 2018, are in water nearly that deep, but statistics say they're still likely to turn up. In the approximately 20 deep-sea crashes over the past 30 years, only one plane's black boxes were never recovered.21.What does the author say about the black box?A.It ensures the normal functioning of an airplane.C.The idea for its design comes from a comic book. Its ability to prevent disastersis incredible.D.It is a necessary device on an airplane.22.What information could be found from the black box on the Yemeni airliner?A.Data for analyzing the cause of the crash.B.The total number of passengers on board.C.The scene of the crash and extent of the damage.D.Homing signals sent by the pilot before the crash.23.Why was the black box redesigned in 1965?A.New materials became available by that time.B.Too much space was needed for its installation.C.The early models often got damaged in the crash.D.The early models didn't provide the needed data.24.Why did the Federal Aviation Authority require the black boxes be painted orange or yellow?A.To distinguish them from the color of the plane.B.To caution people to handle them with care.C.To make them easily identifiable.D.To conform to international standards.25.What do we know about the black boxes from Air France Flight 447?A.There is still a good chance of their being recovered.B.There is an urgent need for them to be restructured.C.They have stopped sending homing signals.D.They were destroyed somewhere near Brazil.Passage twoAs yo u are probably aware, the latest job markets news isn’t good: Unemployment is still more than 9 percent, and new job growth has fallen close to zero. That’s bad for the economy, of course. And it may be especially discouraging if you happen to be looking for a job or hoping to change careers right now. But it actually shouldn’t matter to you nearly as much as you think. That’s because job growth numbers don’t matter to job hunters as much as job turnover data. After all, existing jobs open up every day due to promotions, resignations(辞职), terminations (解雇), and retirements. (Yes, people are retiring even in this economy.) In both good times and bad, turnover creates more openings than economic growth does. Even in June of 2018, when the economy was still humming along, job growth was only 132,000, while turnover was 4.7 million! And as it turns out, even today — with job growth near zero — over 4 million job hunters are being hired every month.I don’t mean to imply that overall job growth doesn’t have an impact on one’s ability to land a job. It’s true that if total employment were higher, it would mean more jobs for all of us to choose from (and compete for). And it’s true that there are currently more people applying for each available job opening, regardless of whether it’s a new one or not.But what often distinguishes those who land jobs from those who don’t is their ability to stay motivated. They’re willing to do the hard work of identifying their valuable skills; be creative about where and how to look; learn how to present themselves to potential employers; and keep going, even after repeated rejections. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that 2.7 millionpeople who wanted and were available for work hadn’t looked within the last four weeks and were no longer even classified as unemployed. So don’t let the headlines fool you into giving up. Four million people get hired every month in the U.S. You can be one of them.26.The author tends to believe that high unemployment rate ______A.take away many people’s job opportunities.B.prevents many people from changing careers.C.should not stop people from looking for a job.D.does not mean the U.S. economy is worsening.27.Where do most job openings come from?A. Job growthB. Job turnoverC. Improved economyD. Business expansion28.What does the author say about overall job growth?A.It doesn’t have much effect on individual job seekers.B.It increases people’s confidence in the economy.C.It gives a ray of hope to the unemployed.D.It doesn’t mean greater job securi ty for the employed.29.What is the key to landing a job according to the author?A. EducationB. IntelligenceC. PersistenceD. Experience30.What do we learn from the passage about the unemployment figures in the US?A.They clearly indicate how healthy the economy is.B.They provide the public with the latest information.C.They warn of the structural problems in the economy.D.They fail to include those who have stopped looking for a job.Passage threeBoys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and are more likely to get involved in activities such as art, dance and music, according to research released today.Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity(男子气概)in which students either sink or swim, the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure to conform(符合) to a stereotype(传统观念), the US study says.Boys at single sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to conform to the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man".The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills. But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with specifically "boy-focused" approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around. "Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的)and prefer the modern genre(类型) in which violence and sexism are major themes," James wrote.Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to conform to a stereotype that men should be "masterful and in charge" in relationships."In mixed schools, boys feel compelled to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means," the study reported.31.The author believes that a single-sex school would ________.A.force boys to hide their em otions to be “real man”B.help to cultivate masculine aggressiveness in boysC.encourage boys to express their emotions more freelyD.naturally reinforce in boys that traditional image of a man32.It is commonly believed that in a mixed schools boys ________.A. perform relatively betterB. grow up more healthilyC. behave more responsiblyD. receive a better education33.What does Tony Little say about the British education system?A.It fails more boys than girls academically.B.It focuses more on mixed school education.C.It fails to give boys the attention they need.D.It places more pressure on boys than on girls.34.According to Abigail James, one of the advantages of single-sex schools is________.A.teaching can be tailored to suit the characteristics of boysB.boys can focus on their lessons without being distractedC.boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested inD.teaching can be designed to promote boys’ team spirit35.Which of the following is characteristic of boys according to Abigail James’report?A. They enjoy being in charge C. They have sharper visionB.They conform to stereotypesD. They are violent and sexistPassage fourAs Artificial Intelligence(AI) becomes increasingly complicated, there are growing concerns that robots could become a threat. This danger can be avoided, according to computer science professor Stuart Russell, if we figure out how to turn human values into a programmable code.Russell argues that as robots take on more complicated tasks, it’s necessary to translate our morals into AI language. For example, if a robot does chores around the house, you wouldn’t want it to put the pet cat in the oven to make dinner for the hungry children. “You would want that robot preloaded with a good set of values,” said Russell. Some robots are already programmed with basic human values. For example, mobile robots have been programmed to keep a comfortable distance from humans. Obviously there are cultural differences, but if you were talking to another person and they came up close in your personal space, you wouldn’t think that’s the kind of thing a properly brought-up person would do.It will be possible to create more complicated moral machines, if only we can find a way to set out human values as clear rules.Robots could also learn values from drawing patterns from large sets of data on human behavior. They are dangerous only if programmers are careless. The biggest concern with robots going against human values is that human beings fail to do sufficient testing and they’ve produced a s ystem that will break some kind of taboo(禁忌).One simple check would be to program a robot to check the correct course of action with a human when presented with an unusual situation. If the robot is unsure whether an animal is suitable for the microwave, it has the opportunity to stop, send out beeps(嘟嘟声), and ask for directions from a human. If we humans aren’t quite sure about a decision, we go and ask somebody else. The most difficult step in programming values will be deciding exactly what we believe in moral, and how to create a set of ethical rules. But if we come up with an answer, robots could be good for humanity.36.What does the author say about the threat of robots?A.It may constitute a challenge to computer programmers.B.It accompanies all machinery involving high technology.C.It can be avoided if human values are translated into their language.D.It has become an unavoidable threat as technology gets more complicated.37.What would we think of a person who invades our personal space according to the author?A. They are aggressive.B. They are outgoing.C. They are ignorant.D. They are ill-bred.38.How do robots learn human values?A.By interacting with humans in everyday life situations.B.By following the daily routines of civilized human beings.C.By picking up patterns from massive data on human behavior.D.By imitating the behavior of properly brought-up human beings.39.What will a well-programmed robot do when facing an unusual situation?A.Keep a distance from possible dangers.B.Stop to seek advice from a human being.C.Trigger its built-in alarm system at once.D.Do sufficient testing before taking action.40.What is most difficult to do when we turn human values into a programmable code?A.Determine what is moral and ethical.B.Design some large-scale experiments.C.Set rules for man-machine interaction.D.Develop a more sophisticated program.Passage fiveWhy do some people live to be older than others? You know the standard explanations: keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what effect does yourpersonality have on your longevity(长寿)?Do some kinds of personalities lead to longer lives? A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at this question by examining the personality8characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100.The study shows that those living the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic (神经质的) than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from the evolutionary theory: those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough times.Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whether study participants were likely to live longer. Those who were more self-disciplined, for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas had no relationship to long life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their ways.Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible.Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother’s personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when we’re adults, which may mean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger.Personality isn’t destiny(命运), and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isn’t just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health.41.The aim of the study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society is____.A.to see whether people’s personality affects their life spanB.to find out if one’s lifestyle has any effect on their healthC.to investigate the role of exercise in living a long lifeD.to examine all the factors contributing to longevity42.What does the author imply about outgoing and sympathetic people?A.They have a good understanding of evolution.B.They are better at negotiating an agreement.C.They generally appear more resourceful.D.They are more likely to get over hardship.43.What finding of the study might prove somewhat out of our expectation?A.Easy-going people can also live a relatively long life.B.Personality characteristics that prove advantageous actually vary with times.C.Such personality characteristics as self-discipline have no effect on longevity.D.Readiness to accept new ideas helps one enjoy longevity.44.What does the recent study of Norwegian mothers show?A.Children’s personality characteristics are invariably determined by theirmothers.B.People with unhealthy eating habits are likely to die sooner.C.Mothers’ influence on children may last longer than fathers’.D.Mothers’ negative personality characteristics may affect their children’s lifespans.45.What can we learn from the findings of the two new studies?A.Anxiety and depression more often than not cut short one’s life span.B.Longevity results from a combination of mental and physical health.C.Personality plays a decisive role in how healthy one is.D.Health is in large part related to one’s lifestyle.Passage sixCulture is the total sum of all the traditions, customs, beliefs, and ways of life of a given group of human beings. In this sense, every group has a culture, however savage, undeveloped, or uncivilized it may seem to us.To the professional anthropologist, there is no intrinsic(本质的;固有的)superiority of one culture over another, just as to the professional linguist there is no intrinsic hierarchy(等级制度) among languages.People once thought of the languages of backward groups as savage, undeveloped forms of speech, consisting largely of grunts and groans. While it is possible that language in general began as a series of grunts and groans, it is a fact established by the study of “backward” languages that no spoken tongue answers that description today. Most languages of uncivilized groups are, by our most severe standards, extremely complex, delicate, and ingenious(机灵的) pieces of machinery for the transfer of ideas. They fall behind our Western languages not in their sound patterns or grammatical structures, which usually fully adequate for all language needs, but only in their vocabularies, which reflects the objects and activities known to their speakers. Even in this department, however, two things are to be noted: 1. All languages seem to possess the machinery for vocabulary expansion, either by putting together words already in existence or by borrowing them from other languages and adapting them to their own system. 2. The objects and activities requiring names and distinctions in “backward” languages, while different from ours, are often surprisingly numerous and complicated. An accidental language distinguishes merely between two degrees of remoteness (“this” and “that”); some languages of the American Indians distinguish between what is close to the speaker, or to the person addressed, or removed from both, or out of sight, or in the past, or in the future. This study of language, in turn, casts a new light upon the claim of the anthropologists that all culture are to be viewed independently, and without ideas of rank or hierarchy.46. The language of uncivilized groups as compared to Western languages arelimited in __. A. sound patterns B. vocabularies C. grammatical structuresD. both A and B47.The author says that professional linguists recognize that ___.A.Western languages are superior to Eastern languagesB.All languages came from grunts and groansC.The hierarchy of languages is difficult to understandD.There is no hierarchy of languages48.The article states that grunt-and-groan forms of speech are found ___.A. nowhere todayB. among the Australian aboriginesC. among Eastern culturesD. among people speaking “backward” languages49.According to the author, languages, whether civilized or not, have ___.A.the potential for expanding vocabularyB.their own sound patternsC.an ability to transfer ideasD.grammatical structures50.Which of the following is implied but not clearly stated in the passage?A.The study of languages has discredited anthropological studies.B.The study of language has reinforced anthropologists in their view that there is no hierarchy among cultures.C.The study of language is the same as the study of anthropologists.D.The study of languages casts a new light upon the claim of anthropologists. Part3 WritingSection A:Translation (20 points)Directions: For this part, you are required to translate a short passage into English. Please write the translation neatly on your answer sheet.
