Weekly Address: Happy Thanksgiving from the Obama FamilyWashington, DC -- In this week's address, the President wished ever yone a happyThanksgiving and reflected on the history of our countr y and its celebration ofdiversity. He gave thanks for the many Americ ans who sacrifice every day, fromvolunteer workers who serve their c ommunities, to men and women in uniform whoserve us all. On Than ksgiving, a holiday that is uniquely American, he reminded usto focus on what unites -- our commitment to American ideals like justice an dequality and our gratitude and love for our country.Remarks of President Barack ObamaWeekly AddressThe White HouseNovember 27, 2014On behalf of the Obama family -- Michelle, Malia, Sasha, Bo, and Sunny -- I want to wish you a veryhappy Thanksgiving. Like many of you, we'll spend the day with family and friends, catching up,eating some good food and watching a little football. Before we lift a fork, we lend a hand b y goingout in the community to serve some of our neighbors in need. And we give thanks for each other, and for all of God's blessings. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because, more than any other, it is uniquely American. Each ofus brings our own traditions and cultures and recipes to the table -- but we all share this day, united by the gratitude for the bounty of this nation. And we welcome the contributions of allpe ople -- no matter their origin or color or beliefs -- who call America home, and who enrich the lifeof our nation. It is a creed as old as our foundi ng: "E pluribus unum" -- that our of many, we areone. We are reminded that this creed, and America itself, was never an inevitability, but the result ofordinary people in every generation doing their part to uphold our founding ideals -- by taking theblessings of freedom, and multiplying them for those who would follow. As President Kennedy oncewrote, even as we give thanks for all that we've inherited from those who came before us --"thedecency of purpose, steadfastness of resolve and strength of will, for the courage and the humility, which they posessed," we must also rem ember that "the highest appreciation is not to utter wordsbut to live by them."Today, we are grateful to all Americans who do their part to live by those ideals, including ourbrave men and women in uniform overseas and th eir families, who sacrifice so much to keepAmerica safe. To our service members who are away from home, we say an extra prayer for youand your loved ones, and we renew our commitment to take care of you as well as you've takencare of us.We are grateful to the countless Americans who serve their communities in soup kitchens andshelters, looking out for those who are less fortun ate, and lifting up those who have fallen on hardtimes. This generosity, this compassion, this belief that we are each other's keepers, is essentia l towho we are, not just on this day, but every day. It's easy to focus on what separates us. But as we gather with loved ones on this Thanksgiving, let's remember and be grateful for what binds u s together. Our love of country. Our commitmentto justice and equality. Our belief that America's best days are ahead, and that her destiny is o ursto shape -- and that our inherited ideals must be the birthright of all of our children. That's what today is all about: that out of many, we are one. Thank you, God bless you, and frommy family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.。

Hi, everybody. For millions of Americans, this is a special and sacred time of year. This week, Jewish families gathered around the Seder table, commemorating 1 the Exodus 2 from Egypt and the triumph of faith over oppression. And this weekend, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and I will join Christians 4 around the world to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the hopeful promise of Easter. In the midst of all of our busy and noisy lives, these holy days afford us the precious opportunity to slow down and spend some quiet moments in prayer and reflection. As Christians, my family and I remember the incredible sacrifice Jesus made for each and every one of us—how He took on the sins of the world and extended the gift of salvation 5 .And we recommit ourselves to following His example here on Earth. To loving our Lord and Savior. To loving our neighbors. And to seeing in everyone, especially "the least of these, as a child of God.Of course, those values are at the heart not just of theChristian 3 faith; but of all faiths. From Judaism to Islam; Hinduism to Sikhism; there echoes a powerful call to serve our brothers and sisters. To keep in our hearts a deep and abiding 6 compassion 7 for all.And to treat others as we wish to be treated ourselves. That's the common humanity that binds 8 us together. And as Americans, we're united by something else, too: faith in the ideals that lie at the heart of our founding; and the belief that, as part of something bigger than ourselves, we have a shared responsibility to look out for our fellow citizens. So this weekend, I hope we're all able to take a moment to pause and reflect. To embrace our loved ones. To give thanks for our blessings 9 . To rededicate ourselves to interests larger than our own.And to all the Christian families who are celebrating the Resurrection, Michelle and I wish you a blessed and joyful 10 Easter. God bless you. And may God continue to bless the United States of America.■文章重点单词注释:1commemoratingv. He was presented with a scroll commemorating his achievements.

Obama

Good morning.Nearly 150 years ago, in one of the darkest years of our nation's history, President Abraham Lincoln set aside the last Thursday in November as a day of Thanksgiving.America was split by Civil War.But Lincoln said in his first Thanksgiving decree(颁布命令)that difficult times made it even more appropriate for our blessings to be(and I quote), “gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people.”This week, the American people came together with families and friends to carry on this distinctly American tradition. We gave thanks for loved ones and for our lasting pride in our communities and our country. We took comfort in good memories while looking forward to the promise of change. But this Thanksgiving also takes place at a time of great trial for our people.Across the country, there were empty seats at the table, as brave Americans continue to serve in harm’s way from the mountains of Afghanistan to the deserts of Iraq.We honor and give thanks for their sacrifice, and stand by the families who endure their absence with such dignity and resolve. At home, we face an economic crisis of historic proportions.More and more Americans are worried about losing a job or making their mortgage payment.Workers are wondering if next month's paycheck will pay next month's bills.Retirees are watching their savings disappear, and students are struggling with the cost of tuition. It's going to take bold and immediate action to confront this crisis. That's why I'm committed to forging a new beginning from the moment I take office as President of the UnitedStates.Earlier this week, I announced my economic team. This talented and dedicated group is already hard at work crafting an Economic Recovery Plan that will create or save 2.5 million new jobs, while making the investments we need to fuel long-term economic growth and stability. But this Thanksgiving, we're reminded that the renewal of our economy won't come from policies and plans alone. It will take the hard work, innovation, service, and strength of the American people.I've seen this strength firsthand over many months--in workers who are ready to power new industries, and farmers and scientists who can tap new sources of energy;in teachers who stay late after school, and parents who put in that extra hour reading to their kids;in young Americans enlisting in a time of war, seniors who volunteer their time, and service programs that bring hope to the hopeless. It's a testament to our national character that so many Americans took time out this Thanksgiving to help feed the hungry and care for the needy. On Wednesday, I visited a food bank at Saint Columbanus Parish in Chicago. And there, as in so many communities across America, folks pitched in time and resources to give a lift to their neighbors in need.It is this spirit that binds us together as one American family--the belief that we rise and fall as one people;that we want that American Dream not just for ourselves, but for each other. That's the spirit we must summon (召唤)as we make a new beginning for our nation.Times are tough. There are difficult months ahead. But we can renew our nation the same way that we have in the many years since Lincoln's first Thanksgiving: by coming together to overcome adversity;by reaching for--and working for--new horizons of opportunity for all Americans. So this weekend, with one heart, and one voice, the American people can give thanks that a newand brighter day is yet to come.

2016.05.07】( MP3+MP4 )Weekly Address: Happy Mother ' s Day From President Obama每周电视讲话:祝天下母亲节日快乐WASHINGTON, DCIn this week's address, President Obama recognized all mothers in celebration of this upcoming Mother's Day, including FirstLady Michelle Obama. The President emphasized that we should give all parents the support they need by providing paid maternity and paternity leave, sick leave, accommodations for workers who are pregnant, good health care, affordable child care, flexibility at work, equal pay, and a decent minimum wage.Underscoring the importance of these issues, the President called on Congress to give meaning to Mother's Day by taking action on these items.
Hello, everybody. In our house, everybody knows that President is only the third-most important job in the family. So this weekend, I 'mgoing to take a little extra time to say thank you to Michelle for the remarkable way she does the most important job: being a mom. And I 'm going to give extra thanks to my mothe-irn-law's always been to Michtheelle andfor the role model shecountless selfless ways in which she' s helped Michelle and me raise Malia and Sasha. I am incredibly lucky to have women who help me raise, love, and look after our girls.
I hope you ' ll also take a moment to say thank you to the women in your life who love you in that special way mothers do. Biological moms, adoptive moms, and foster moms; single moms, grandmoms and godmothers;aunts and mentors —whomever you think of when you think of Mother ' s Day. Or take a moment, like I will, to remember the moms who raised us, whose big hearts sustained us, and whom we miss every day, no matter how old we get.
Giving flowers is always a good idea. But I hope that on this Mother 's Day, we' ll recommit ourselves to doing more than that: Through deeds that match our words, let ' s give mothers the respect they deserve, give all women the equality they deserve, and give all parents the support they need in their most important roles.
That includes paid maternity and paternity leave, sick leave, accommodations for workers who are pregnant, good health care, affordable child care, flexibility at work, equal pay, and a decent minimum wage. We ask our mothers to do more than their fair share of just about everything. Making sure they ' re treated fairly is the least we can do.
The idea of setting aside a Sunday in May for our mothers became an official holiday with a Congressional resolution a little more than 100 years ago. They did it on May 8 - the same day we' II celebrate Mother ' s Daythis year. IfCongress can make a holiday, surely they can back it up with the things that give it meaning. After all, that's what my mother taught me. I couldn 't just say I was going todo the right thing, or say I agreed with it on principle. I had to actually do it.
So this Mother‘s Day, say thank you. Say,I love you. ” And let 's make sure we show that gratitude and appreciation through acts of respect throughout the year.No one deserves that more than our moms.
Happy Mother 's Day, and have a great weekend.
