For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)St Kilda is a tiny archipelago (群岛)of the North Atlantic Ocean. The islands are among the most spectacular, but the greatest fascination is that, for over a thousand years, people lived there and possessed a sense of community. Cut off from the mainland, the islanders had a distinct way of living their lives, mainly eating the seabirds that returned to breed on the rocks.Isolation also had a big effect upon St kildans attitudes and ideas. The people sacrificed themselves year in and year out, in a constant battle to secure a livelihood. In such harsh conditions, life was only possible because the whole community workedtogether. In the 19th century St Kilda was subject to pressures from the outside world. Education, religion and tourism all attempted to throw the St Kildans5 way of life into doubt. In the early 20th century, the strength of the community became weakened as contact with the rest of Britain increased. When disease cut their numbers, and wind and sea made it difficult to get adequate food, the St Kildans were forced to turn to the mainland for assistance. In 1930, the St Kildans finally agreed to abandon their homes. They settled on the Scottish mainland, not realizing it meant throwing themselves into the 20th century. As adults, they had to accept those values most Scots believe in. For instance, the islanders found it difficult to' base their existence upon money. They had never lived in a world where they bought goods and services from each other. The islanders showed themselves indifferent to the jobs they were given on the mainland. The labours asked of them were unskilled compared with the spectacular skills they had once performed in order to kill seabirds. Moreover, killing birds had once provided the community with food to survive. On the mainland, however, the tasks they were asked to perform did not provide them immediately with what was needed to keep them fed and warm. The history of the St Kildans after the evacuation (撤离),of their inability and lack of resolution to fit into urban society, makes sad reading. When they were resettled on the mainland, the St Kildans were forced to live in a society whose values were unacceptable and incomprehensible to the majority of them. For many, the move was a tragedy.56. According to Paragraph 3, the following factors lead to Stkildans seeking help from outside EXCEPT______________.A. unbearable windB. insufficient food supplyC. contact with BritainD. worsening health57. Japanese scholars have been confused for ages about their stability. For centuries, many attributed the resilience (抗震性)of pagodas to the massive trunk-like central columns known as shinbashira, which bends and swings during a typhoon or earthquake, just like a tall tree. But the amazing thing is that the shinbashira actually does not carry any load at all but is suspended from the top of the pagoda — hanging loosely down through the middle of the building. The weight of the building is supported entirely by twelve outer and four inner columns. And what is the role of the shinbashira, the central column? The best way to understand the shinbashira's role is to watch a video made by Shuzo Ishida, a structural engineer at Kyoto Institute of Technology. Mr. Ishida, known to his students as “Professor Pagoda” has built a series of models and tested them on a “shake-table” in his laboratory. In short, the shinbashira was acting like an enormous pendulum (钟摆).Under pressure, a pagoda’s loose floors could be made to slide back and forth independently. Viewed from the side, the pagoda seemed to be doing a snake dance — with each floor moving in the opposite direction to its neighbours above and below. Theshinbashira, running up through a hole in the centre of the building, made it unlikely that individual storeys moved too far because, after moving a certain distance, they banged into it, passing on energy away along the column.Another strange feature of the Japanese pagoda is that, because of the building tapers (锥形), with each floor plan being smaller than the one below, none of the vertical (垂直的)columns that carry the weight of the building is connected to its corresponding column above. In other words, a five-storey pagoda contains not even one column that travels right up through the building. More surprising is the fact that the individual storeys of a Japanese pagoda are not actually connected to each other. They are simply stacked one on top of another like a pile of hats. The extra-wide eaves (屋檐)also play a part. Think of them as a balancing pole of tightrope-walkers. The bigger the mass at each end of the pole, the easier it is for the tightrope walker to maintain his balance. The same holds true for a pagoda. With the eaves extending out on all sides like balancing poles, the building responds to even the most powerful earthquake with a graceful swinging, never an abrupt shaking.62. In a Japanese pagoda, the shinbashira is designed to______________.A. bear certain amount of weight of the pagodaB. bend under pressure the way a tall tree doesC. connect the floors with pagoda’s baseD. stop the floors from moving too far58. Shuzo Ishida performs experiments in order to___________________.A. apply the pendulum into practiceB. gain ins ight into the “shake-table” modelC. learn about the mechanisms of pagodasD. locate shinbashira^ exact position in a pagoda59. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the article?A. Some columns may extend from the bottom to the top of a pagoda.B. The functions of extra eaves and balancing poles are similar.C. The storeys of a Japanese pagoda are fitted loosely.D. Pagodas5 amazing capacity to resist impact has long puzzled scholars.60. Shuzo Ishida, a Distinguished EngineerSection CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. Why should mankind explore space? Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What prompted our distant ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? 67________________ . The wider the distribution of a species, the better its chance of survival.Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be located. Additional resources are always beneficial when used wisely, and can increase our chances ofsurvival. Knowledge or techniques acquired through exploration, or preparing to explore, filter from thedevelopers into society at large. 68_______. Also, we have already benefited from other by-products, including improvements in earthquake prediction — which has saved many lives —in satellites used for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick saucepans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products of technological developments in the space industry!_____69___________.The chances of a large comet (彗星)hitting the Earth are small, but it could happen in time. Such strikes in the past may account for the extinction of dinosaurs and other species. Human technology is reaching the point where it might be able to detect the possibility of this happening, and enable us to minimize the damage, or prevent it completely, allowing us as a species to avoid extinction. In certain circumstances, life on Earth may become impossible: over-population or wide spread diseases, for instance, might eventually force us to find other places to live. While the earth is the only planet known to sustain life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to inhabit other planets and moons. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.______70___________A. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives.B. Space allows us to expand and succeed: for the sake of everyone on the earth, now and in the future, space exploration is essential.C. The mysterious space objects varying in size have beenfascinated scientists and scholars for years.D. It appears that we are driven to ensure the success and continuation of not just our own genes, but of the species as a whole.E. Therefore it still poses a problem for us human beings whether to explore the space at the cost of our own homelandsF. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers.II. Summary WritingDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Last year my company was bought by a large corporation and most of the managers lost their jobs. That was when I decided to do something I’d always wanted to do ——become a freelance writer (自由作家).Changing professions has meant that my lifestyle has changed in a number of ways.I work about as much as I did before ——between 45 and 50 hours a week —but my schedule is much less fixed than it used to be. Before, I worked from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, with a few extra hours on weekends. Now, however, 1 work when I feel like it. For instance, sometimes I work until midnight or 2 a.m., then sleep until noon. I really prefer this kind of schedule. While I was working as a manager, I never exercised. I already felt tired after work, so I just came home in the evening and watched TV. However, last year I joined a health club and began to do regular exercise. As a result I have lost over 10 pounds and I feel much better. Tve also started to eat more healthfully. I used to eat a lot of fast food, but now I do my own shopping. I buylots of fruits and vegetables and cook them at home.Of course, not all the changes have been that easy. For example, I don't feel as safe financially as I used to. When I was working as a manager, I never worried much about money. I could always count on getting my paycheck every two weeks. Working freelance, I don't have a regular paycheck. So now I have to make sure that there’s enough money until the next check arrives. All in all, I really like my current lifestyle. Of course, that doesn’t mean I’ll never want to have a “regular” job. But for me, at least, it suits me.III. TranslationDirections: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.72. 中午的欢迎会已推迟到下周三。

This is very important to remember. In introductions use the person’s last name plus the word san which means Mr. or Ms. The Japaneseprefer to use last names. Do not request that they call you by your first name only. If you are uncertain about the pronunciation of a name, ask for assistance.Understand that the Japanese prefer not to use the word no. If you ask a question they may simply respond with a yes but clearly mean no. Understanding this is critical in the negotiation process. In Asia the number 4 is bad luck, because in Japanese it sounds like the word ‘shuh-shuh’, which sounds like the word for death.Dress Etiquette. Business attire is conservative.. Men should wear dark-coloured, conservative business suits.. Women should dress conservatively.Body Language1.Japanese people prefer not to stand close to others.2.Try and avoid touching others.3.Do not take a smile as being a signal of happiness, the Japanese smile when mad, embarrassed, sad or disappointed.4.While sitting, don’t show the bottom of your shoes.5.It is rude to talk to someone when leaving your hands in your pockets.6.Put your hand in front of your face. Make sure your palm is facing towards your face. Then wave it back and forth, this is a polite way to answer “no” or “I don’t know” to acompliment.7.It is considered rude to stare at someone. Eye contact isn’t polite.8.Don’t lean against anything, a chair, a wall, a door, etc…9.When visiting someone, sit towards the edge to show proper respect and leaning back means closeness (such as a childhood friend).Business Negotiation. The Japanese are non-confrontational.. They have a difficult time saying 'no', so you must be vigilant at observing their non-verbal communication.. It is best to phrase questions so that they can answer yes. For example, do you disagree with this? Group decision-making and consensus are important.. Written contracts are required.. The Japanese often remain silent for long periods of time. Be patient and try to work out if your Japanese colleagues have understood what was said.. Japanese prefer broad agreements and mutual understanding so that when problems arise they can be handled flexibly.. Using a Japanese lawyer is seen as a gesture of goodwill. Note that Japanese lawyers are quite different from Western lawyers as they are much more functionary.. Never lose your temper or raise your voice during negotiations.. Some Japanese close their eyes when they want to listen intently.. The Japanese seldom grant concession. They expect both parties to come to the table with their best offer.. The Japanese do not see contracts as final agreements so they can be renegotiated.Dining EtiquetteOn the rare occasion you are invited to a Japanese house:. Remove your shoes before entering and put on the slippers left at the doorway.. Leave your shoes pointing away from the doorway you are about to walk through.. Arrive on time or no more than 5 minutes late if invited for dinner.. If invited to a large social gathering, arriving a little bit later than the invitation is acceptable, although punctuality is always appreciated.. Unless you have been told the event is casual, dress as if you were going into the office.. If you must go to the toilet, put on the toilet slippers and remove them when you are finished. Meeting Etiquette. Greetings in Japan are very formal and ritualized.. It is important to show the correct amount of respect and deference to someone based upon their status relative to your own.. If at all possible, wait to be introduced.. It can be seen as impolite to introduce yourself, even in a large gathering.. While foreigners are expected to shake hands, the traditional form of greeting is the bow. How far you bow depends upon your relationship to the other person as well as the situation. The deeperyou bow, the more respect you show.. A foreign visitor ('gaijin') may bow the head slightly, since no one expects foreigners to generally understand the subtle nuances of bowing.Gift Giving Etiquette. Gift-giving is highly ritualistic and meaningful.. The ceremony of presenting the gift and the way it is wrapped is as important--sometimes more important--than the gift itself.. Gifts are given for many occasions.. The gift need not be expensive, but take great care to ask someone who understands the culture to help you decide what type of gift to give.. Good quality chocolates or small cakes are good ideas.. Do not give lilies, camellias or lotus blossoms as they are associated with funerals.. Do not give white flowers of any kind as they are associated with funerals.. Do not give potted plants as they encourage sickness, although a bonsai tree is always acceptable. . Give items in odd numbers, but not 9.. If you buy the gift in Japan, have it wrapped.. Pastel colours are the best choices for wrapping paper.. Gifts are not opened when received.Understanding of Foreign Ways. Japanese understand that it is very difficult for foreigners to work in Japan.. They will not expect you to speak or read Japanese, or be conversant with their strict cultural nuances and protocol.. Mistakes are allowed as long as genuine respect is shown at all times.. They will usually try to help you but often feel embarrassment at their own lack of understanding or English language ability.Relationships & Communication. The Japanese prefer to do business on the basis of personal relationships.. In general, being introduced or recommended by someone who already has a good relationship with the company is extremely helpful as it allows the Japanese to know how to place you in a hierarchy relative to themselves.. One way to build and maintain relationships is with greetings / seasonal cards.. It is important to be a good correspondent as the Japanese hold this in high esteem.Business Meeting Etiquette. Appointments are required and, whenever possible, should be made several weeks in advance. . It is best to telephone for an appointment rather than send a letter, fax or email.. Punctuality is important. Arrive on time for meetings and expect your Japanese colleagues will do the same.. Since this is a group society, even if you think you will be meeting one person, be prepared for a group meeting.. The most senior Japanese person will be seated furthest from the door, with the rest of the people in descending rank until the most junior person is seated closest to the door.. It may take several meetings for your Japanese counterparts to become comfortable with you and be able to conduct business with you.. This initial getting to know you time is crucial to laying the foundation for a successful relationship. . You may be awarded a small amount of business as a trial to see if you meet your commitments. . If you respond quickly and with excellent service, you prove your ability and trustworthiness.. Never refuse a request, no matter how difficult or non- profitable it may appear. The Japanese are looking for a long-term relationship.. Always provide a package of literature about your company including articles and client testimonials.. Always give a small gift, as a token of your esteem, and present it to the most senior person at the end of the meeting. Your Japanese contact can advise you on where to find something appropriate.GreetingsGreetings are considered to be of extreme importance in Japanese culture. Students in elementary and secondary schools are often admonished to deliver greetings with energy and vigor. A lazy greeting is regarded with the type of disdain that would accompany a limp handshake in parts of the West.Simply walking off without saying anything is frowned upon. When parting, instead of simply saying goodbye, it is common to make a wish to meet again.。

组合演练(二)[阅读理解+七选五]Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2017·湖南邵阳大联考)Owning a pet makes us healthier and happier, but for many of us,long hours at work, tight budgets and small flats means it’s just not practical. But there’s good news for animal lovers;you can now cozy up with a cup of tea while spending time with furry friends,as the global movement of animal cafes has reached the UK.The international phenomenon originated in Taipei, where the world’s first cat cafe,Cat Flower Garden, opened in 1998.Curious tourists soon discovered the pet paradise and brought the concept over to Japan. The first Japanese cat cafe opened in Osaka in 2005,and now there are said to be nearly 40 in Tokyo alone.Japan has now gone far beyond the original concept, and some of the trendiest(时髦的) places to visit nowadays have owls, rabbits and goats hanging around.Tokyo’s Fukuro no Mise, which means the “Shop of Owls”,has full guest lists for up to two months.Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium was the first of its kind to open up in East London in 2014.The successful cat cafe takes bookings 50 days ahead and usually about 90% of them book out about 5-6 weeks in advance,Though the business has been a success, the owner Lauren Pears worries a little bit about the sudden rise of cat cafes everywhere.“Cat cafes are still in their beginnings here and we’ve seen a very recent cautionary tale springing up in Singapore with the sudden burst of cat cafes in the city.Earlier this year, one of them was closed down after serious animal welfare issues resulted in the deaths of several cats.”She emphasizes that even though the job is fun and rewarding,it also comes with serious responsibility.语篇解读本文主要讲了猫咪咖啡馆的出现,使得很多人可以很轻易地接触宠物,但是,过多的猫咪咖啡馆也带来了很多问题。

A BAD CASE OF STRIPES 糟糕,身上长条纹了!(多谢melaniezengxing的分享!)A Bad Case of Stripes《糟糕,身上长条纹了!》By David ShannonPage 1Camilla cream loved lima beans. But she never ate them. All of her friends hated lima beans, and she wanted to fin it. Camilla was always worried about what other people thought of her.Today she was fretting even more than usual. It was the first day of school, and she couldn’t decide what to wear. There were so many people to impress! She tried on forty-two outfits, but none seemed quite right. She put on a pretty red dress and looked in the mirror. Then she screamed.Page 2Her mother ran into the room, and she screamed, too.” Oh my heavens!” she cried. “You’re completely covered with stripes!”This was certainly true. Camilla was striped from head to toe.She looked like a rainbow.Mrs. Cream felt Camilla’s forehead. “Do you feel all right?” she asked.I feel fine,” Camilla answered, “but just look at me!”“You get back in bed this instant,” her mother ordered. “You’re not going to school today.” Camilla was relieved. She didn’t want to miss the first day of school, but she was afraid of what the other kids would say. And she had no idea what to wear with those crazy stripes.Page 3That afternoon, Dr. Bumble came to examine C amilla. “Most extraordinary!” he exclaimed. “I’ve never seen anything like it. Are you having any coughing, sneezing, runny nose, aches, pains, chills, hot flashes, dizziness, drowsiness, shortness of breath, or uncontrollable twitching?” “No,” Camilla told him. “I feel fine.”“Well then,” Dr. Bumble said, turning to Mrs. Cream, “I don’t see any reason why she shouldn’t go to school tomorrow. Here’s some ointment that should help clear up those stripes in a few days. If it doesn’t, you know where to reach me.” And off he went.Page 4The next day was a disaster. Everyone at school laughed at Camilla. They called her “Camilla Crayon” and “Night of the Living Lollipop.” The tried her best to act as if everything were normal, but when the class said the Pledge of Allegiance, her stripes turned red, white, and blue, and she broke out in starts!Page 5The other kids thought this was great. One yelled out, “Let’s see some purple polka dots!” Sure enough, Camilla turned all purple polka-dotty. Someone else shouted, “Checkerboard!” and a pattern of squares covered her skin. Soon everyone was calling out different shapes and colors, and poor Camilla was changing faster than you can change channels on a T.V.Page 6That night, Mr. Harms, the school principal, called. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Cream,” he said. “I’m going to have to ask you to keep Camilla home from school. She’s just too much of a distraction and I’ve been getting calls from the other parents. They’re afraid those stripes may be contagious.” Camilla wa s so embarrassed. She couldn’t believe that two days ago everyone liked her. Now, nobody wanted to be in the same room with her.Her father tried to make her feel better. “Is there anything I can get you sweetheart?” he asked. “No, thank you,” sighed Cam illa. What she really wanted was a nice plate of lima beans, but she had been laughed at enough for one day.Page 7“Hmm, well, yes, I see,” Dr. Bumble mumbled when Mr. Cream phoned the next day. “I think I’d better bring in the Specialists. We’ll be right over.”About an hour later, Dr. Bumble arrived with four people in long white coats. He introduced them to the Creams. “This is Dr. Grop, Dr. Sponge, Dr. Cricket, and Dr. Young.”Then the Specialists went to work on Camilla. They squeezed and jabbed, tapped and tested. It was very uncomfortable.“Well, it’s not the mumps,” concluded Dr. Grop. “Or the measles,” said Dr. Sponge. “Definitely not chicken pox,” put in Dr. Cricket. “Or sunburn,” said Dr. Young. “Try these,” said the Specialists. They each handed her a bottle filled with different colored pills.“Take one of each before bed,” said Dr. GropThen they filed out the front door, followed by Dr. Bumble.Page 8That night, Camilla took her medicine. It was awful. When she woke up the next morning, she did feel different, but when she got dressed, her clothes didn’t fit right. She looked in the mirror, and there, staring back at her, was a giant, multi-colored pill with her face on it.Page 9Dr. Bumble rushed over as soon as Mrs. Cream called. But this time, instead of the Specialists, he brought the Experts.Dr. Gourd and Mr. Mellon were the finest scientific minds in the land. Once again, Camilla was poked and prodded, looked at and listened to. The Experts wrote down lots of numbers. Then they huddled together and whispered.Dr. Gourd finally spoke. “It might be a virus,” he announced with authority. Suddenly, fuzzy little virus balls appeared all over Camilla.“Or possibly some form of bacteria,” said Mr. Mellon. Out popped squiggly lit tle bacteria tails. “Or it could be a fungus,” added Dr. Gourd. Instantly, Camilla was covered with different colored fungus blotches. The Experts looked at Camilla, then at each other. “We need to go over these numbers again back at the lab,” Dr. Gourd explained. “We’ll call you when we know something.” But the Experts didn’t have a clue, much less a cure.Page 10By now the T.V. news had found out about Camilla. Reporters from every channel were outside her house, telling the story of “The Bizarre Case of the Incredible Changing Kid.” Soon a hugecrowd was camped out on the front lawn.Page 11The Creams were swamped with all kinds of remedies from psychologists, allergists, herbalists, nutrionists, psychics, an old medicine man, a guru, and even a veterinarian. Each so-called cure only added to poor Cailla’s strange appearance until it was hard to even recognize her.l She sprouted roots and berries and crystals and feathers and a long furry tail. But nothing worked. Page 12One day, a woman who called herself an Environmental Therapist claimed she could cure Camilla. “Close your eyes,” she said. “Breathe deeply, and become one with your room.”“I wish you hadn’t said that,” Camilla groaned.Slowly, she started to melt into the walls of her room. Her bed became her mouth, her nose was a dresser, and two paintings were her eyes. The therapist screamed and ran from the house.“What are we going to do?” cried Mrs. Cream. “It just keeps getting worse and worse!” She began to sob.Page 13At that moment, Mr. Cream heard a quiet little knock at the front door. He opened it, and there stood an old woman who was just as plump and sweet as a strawberry.“Excuse me,” she said brightly. “But I think I can help.”Page 14She went into Camilla’s room and looked around. “My goodness,” she said with a shake of her head. “What we have here is a bad case of stripes. One of the worst I’ve ever seen!” She pulled a container of small green beans from her bag. “Here,” she said. “These might do the trick.”“Are tho se magic beans?” asked Mrs. Cream.“Oh my, no,” replied the kind old woman. “There’s no such thing. These are just plain old lima beans. I’ll bet you’d like some, wouldn’t you?” she asked Camilla.Camilla wanted a big, heaping plateful of lima beans more than just about anything, butr she was still afraid to admit it.“Yuck!” she said. “No one likes lima beans, especially me!”“Oh, dear,” the old woman said sadly. “I guess I was wrong about you.” She put the beans back in her bag and started toward the door.Camilla watched the old woman walk away. Those beans would taste so good. And being laughed at for eating them was nothing, compared to what she’d been going through. She finally couldn’t stand it.“Wait!” she cried. “The truth is…I really love lima beans.”“I thought so,” the old woman said with a smile. She took a handful of beans and popped them into Camilla’s mouth.“Mmmm,” said Camilla.Page 15Suddenly the branches, feathers, and squiggly tails began to disappear. Then the whole room swirled around. When it stopped, there stood Camilla, and everything was back to normal.“I’m cured!” she shouted.“Yes,” said the old woman. “I knew the real you was in there somewhere.” She patted Camilla on the head. Then she went outside and vanished into the crowd.Page 16Afterward, Camilla wasn’t quite the same. Some of the kids at school said she was weird, but she didn’t care a bit. She ate all the lima beans she wanted, and she never had even a case of the stripes again.。

What do you wear to work? Do you wear a uniform, perhaps something formal, or do you just pick up the first T-shirt you can find in your wardrobe? I dress in casual clothes but I sometimes wonder: could a makeover advance my career? Accountancy firm PwC believes appearance is very important. They say people make up their mind about someone in just 30 seconds. What you wear can help you be remembered for the right reasons.Image consultants say what you wear is a big part of your personal brand. But for many people what should matter is whether you can do your job, rather than your choice of attire. Karen Pine, a psychology professor at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK, says women who wear slightly provocative clothes to work are judged to be less competent and less likely to get a promotion. So low-cut dresses and tight-fitting clothes are a no-no, unless you’re in show business. And men aren’t off the hook when it comes to dress code either. Pine says that men are perceived as less successful if they wear an off-the-shelf suit, while equally suitable candidates who don a tailor-made suit are more likely to get a promotion. But clothes are about more than just appearances. Smart Works is a charity in the UK which offers high-quality clothes for unemployed women on low income to help them find a job.
The charity’s chairwoman Juliet Hughes-Hallett says: “It’s not really about the clothes. It’s often really emotional. The people who are dressing them are feeding their self-esteem.”So, maybe it’s a good idea to put on that old Superman T-shirt after all, if only under my smart suit. It might make me feel strong and superior. And I might start wearing glasses. They do make me look more intellectual and… well, they never did Clark Ke nt any harm. Who knows where my new clothes could lead me?
