He'll plop himself down right in front of the TV and snooze away. Funnily enough, Benny seems to really like watching dog shows and movies with other dogs in them. Whenever he hears barking from the TV, his head will perk up and his ears will go all pointy like a little radar dish. So cute!Eventually, it's time for Benny (and me) to go to bed. Benny has a super comfy doggy bed in the corner of my room that he loves. As soon as the lights go out, he'll curl up into a big fluffy ball of fur and snore away. It started off with David saying how he liked to go cycling every Saturday morning when the weather was nice. He said it was a great way to start his weekend.Then David started describing this awesome bike trail he liked to take. He said it went through the countryside outside of town. There were fields with cows and horses grazing, and he could see the mountains off in the distance. How cool is that? Getting to bike past farms and look at the mountains. My hometown doesn't have any of that stuff.On the trail, David said there was a little creek that ran alongside parts of the path. In the spring when it rained a lot, the creek would have waterfalls and rapids that he thought looked super neat. But even in the summer when the water level got lower, he still liked listening to the babbling sounds it made.Maybe the coolest part though was when David got to this big hill on the trail. He said he would pedal as hard as he could to get to the top, and then he'd just coast all the way down the other side without pedaling at all! He said the wind would be whipping through his hair and it felt like he was flying. Towering ice castles and palaces loomed over us, glittering in the sunlight. Each one was amazingly detailed, with delicate icy carvings of animals, flowers, and even famous landmarks from around the world. It seriously looked like something created by ice fairies or Jack Frost himself!My little brother Jason was absolutely mesmerized by the giant Ice Slides. They were these winding, twisty slides carved completely out of ice that were multiple stories tall! Jason must have gone down them a hundred times, never seeming to get bored. I have to admit, I went on the slides quite a few times too. Sliding down those slippery chutes of ice at top speed while the freezing wind whipped through my hair was such a crazy adrenaline rush!Another one of the coolest attractions was the Ice Sculptures Exhibition. The artistry and skill it must have taken to chisel those out of solid ice blocks was just mind-blowing to me. I felt like I was walking through an icy museum!And let's not forget about all the awesome snow activities we got to do, like sledding, building snowmen, and having epic snowball fights. We stayed at Harbin until after dark because everything looked even more magical when it was all lit up by colorful lights. The ice castles and sculptures glowed like frozen rainbows in the night sky. Totally breathtaking!After a couple days of icy fun, we headed to check out some other cool spots around Harbin. We took a tour through the Old Jewish Quarter, which has a really fascinating history. Did you know that thousands of Jewish refugees fled to Harbin during World War II to escape from Nazi persecution in Europe? The buildings and synagogues in that neighborhood have been preserved to honor that story.Then we got to walk across the frozen Songhua River! Yeah, you read that right - the river was literally frozen solid, so we could just stroll right across the thick ice like it was a road. The ice was so clear that you could see straight through to the water below. My dad said in the springtime, the river thaws and huge chunks of ice start flowing down it. I can't even imagine what a sight that must be!Our last stop was the lively St. Sophia Square, where we did some shopping at the markets for souvenirs and Russian treatslike chocolates, nuts, and pastries. Harbin's culture has been really influenced by its close proximity to Russia, so you can find tons of great Russian food and products. We loaded up on all sorts of goodies to take home with us.Looking back, this was seriously one of the most fun and memorable vacations I've ever been on.
