Hints:Norway/NorwegianNigerSave the ChildrenState of the World's Mothers 2012Carolyn MilesMother's DaySwedenDenmark校对:betty0925A new report says Norway is the best place in the world to be a mother, while Niger is the worst. The humanitarian group - Save the Children - has released its State of the World's Mothers 2012 report. Save the Children President and CEO Carolyn Miles says the report's been released prior to the annual celebration of Mother's Day."The mothers report is an annual report we do that really looks at all sorts of different factors for moms from around the world. And this year we looked at 165 countries. And we look at where is it the best and the worst place to be a mom."The rankings are based on conditions affecting both women and children."We look at the status of women. We look at what it's like to give birth in those countries. We look at the survival rates of kids in those countries. We think that's a big indicator of whether it's a good place to be a mom or not a good place to be a mom. And so those are all the different types of things that we look at."Save the Children says the best place to be a mother is Norway."Norway really does well all across the board. Education rates for women and girls where Norway is number one, the number of skilled attendants at birth, which is a big indicator for how easy it is to be a mom. Virtually every woman in Norway has an attendant, a skilled attendant at birth. Typically, Norwegian girls can expect to receive 18 years of formal education. So all across the board Norway really comes out quite well."Rounding out the top five are Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand and Denmark. The United States ranks 25th.

Debate: How To Fix The Economy内容简介:概述:紧缩政策能否解决欧洲经济之困,各派意见不一。
01"In times of boom or economic growth, government should be cut. The size of government, government spending, should go down. And that never happens, either."German Chancellor Angela Merkel says governments that spend more than they take in must eventually pay back the loans they use to cover their deficits. Austerity advocates argue that, without spending cuts, lenders will lose confidence they will be repaid. That lost confidence could mean future loans will be unavailable or expensive.Ms. Merkel's opinion is important here because Germany is Europe's largest economy and the main contributor to the emergency loans used to bail out economically troubled neighbors. But Krugman says austerity has failed. "We have one hell of an experiment in austerity and the results are in... Austerity has been contractionary with a vengeance."Some voters in Germany may share Krugman's views. Merkel's political party lost a state election recently where arguments about spending and austerity were part of the political debate.“在经济繁荣昌盛之际,政府应该削减开支,政府支出数额应该减少。

Hints:North CarolinaEast CoastHigh PointHigh Point MuseumThomasvilleTogether, these two small cities really do produce more furniture than any other place in America. This happened because, over the past century, a lot of factories moved from northern states to North Carolina for its 11 different species of wood, its warmer weather, its direct rail lines to big East Coast markets, and its non-union labor pool.High Point is holding its annual "furniture market" this month. It's an event in which manufacturers display their latest designs in 51 showrooms, and buyers from most states and as many as 100 countries show up and walk the aisles.Down the street, at the High Point Museum, they can watch as skilled carpenters, upholsterers, and other craftspeople show how some of the nation's finest furniture is assembled –from the cutting of trees to the making of frames, to the gluing and application of veneers and stains and polishes. After all that, perhaps the visitors can drive over to Thomasville and check out the workmanship on a chair – a really, really big chair.

Since at least the days of Aristotle, a search for universal principles has characterized the scientific enterprise. In some ways, this quest for commonalities defines science: without it, there is no underlying order and pattern, merely as many explanations as there are things in the world. Newton's laws of motion, the oxygen theory of combustion and Darwinian evolution each bind a host of different phenomena into a single explicatory framework.
(46)In physics, one approach takes this impulse for unification to its extreme, and seeks a theory of everything — a single generative equation for all we see. It is becoming less clear, however, that such a theory would be a simplification, given the proliferation of dimensions and universes that it might entail. Nonetheless, unification of sorts remains a major goal.
