As we know, the city budget for next year does not include enough money to maintain the playing fields and skating rink (溜冰场) in Center Park. We are aware that the storms that hit Lyndon last summer caused a great amount of damage, and the city’s budget should first be used to repair the high school, city hall, and airport. Don’t you realize, however, what a loss the park will be?

Center Park is the best place in the city for sports, picnics, concerts, walking, and enjoying nature. It plays a vital role in the education of our children. Each year science teachers bring their classes to the park on field trips to study plants and animals. Small children use the playground equipment every day. There are no other parks nearby for these kids to enjoy themselves. Every day I see the park on my way to school. It is absolutely necessary to support Center Park.

The Lyndon High School Ice Skating Club would like to offer the city some help. We are suggesting a Skatathon. Our members would ask family, friends, and businesses for help, and then skate all day. For every mile skated, we would raise money to be used to maintain the fields and rink. Also, some of our members are willing to help the park staff do simple repairs at the rink.

While it appears that the city can no longer afford Center Park, other facts tell us we have to maintain this park as a place for the entire Lyndon community. It is a green, refreshing place to go in the middle of the city. We hope our idea is the first of many good ideas to keep Center Park green and clean.

At the age of 16, Julia Butterfly Hill quit school and worked at a restaurant. For many years, she was only interested in making money and material things. Then one day she had a serious car accident, which chang ed her life. Hill said: “I realized I wanted to find a more powerful purpose for being here on this planet.”

As soon as she recovered, Hill traveled to California. There she saw ancient redwood trees, which are the largest trees in the whole world. The wood from redwood trunks is very hard. So the Pacific Lumber Company cut down many of the huge redwoods to use for construction. There are not many forests of these trees left. Many environmental activists want to protect the remaining trees. The redwoods are very important to the environment.

In 1997 Hill learned a group called Earth First was working to protect a particular group of trees. They decided to send someone up into a redwood tree, hoping this would stop the company from cutting the trees down. Julia Butterfly Hill volunteered.

Hill lived in the tree for over two years without ever coming down. Her home was a 6-by-8-foot tree house, 180 feet up. It is always cold and wet in a redwood tree. There were even very serious winter storms while Hill was in the tree. The wind and cold almost knocked Hill out of the tree. But she did not fall — she survived.

Finally, after years of arguing, the company decided to protect Luna, the tree Hill lived in. They signed an agreement to never cut down this huge redwood tree or the trees around it. When Hill put her feet on the earth again, she began to cry. But from that moment on Hill hasn’t stopped working to protect the environment.

Cycling to school or work is now faster and more efficient than any other types of transport in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. The city has gone all out to encourage its cyclists — it has laid out more than 1,000 km of cycle lanes (车道), and improved traffic signals at the crossroads.

No wonder Copenhagen’s cyclists hardly break traffic rules. Several of the city’s main streets are closed to cars and instead have only cycle lanes and cycle parking areas. Bike lanes along the major roads are wide and slightly raised. Copenhagen is developing 38 bike superhighways along the main city routes. The city’s light rail system has recently permitted cyclists to bring their cycles on board, and it is free of charge.

The city planners are absolutely committed to make cyclists feel safe. It is simply a smooth continuous journey from home to school! Even in the bitterly cold winters, the cycle lanes are cleared of snow before car lanes.

Lately, however, the government is facing a new and curious problem. Many cyclists have now started leaving their cycles just about anywhere. Often, the biggest challenge faced by cyclists is getting their bike out of these huge piles without getting chain oil onto themselves. Perhaps the solution lies in turning more car parking spaces into cycle parking areas, or else, building multi-story or underground parking spaces for cycles.

Meanwhile, other u rban cities are following this capital city’s example. London, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Beijing and many others are all adopting measures to encourage cyclists, inspired by the City of Cyclists.

I still remember what I became a good table tennis player.

The first day I go to high school, I saw some of my classmate playing table tennis. Amazing at how skillful they were, I was determined to be just as good. Later on, I often watched them careful to learn their techniques. Then I was kept practising until I became confident enough to challenge the good players. At the end of the term I became one of best players in my class.

I am really proud for this experience, because it helps me realise that we all can a chieve your goals through hard work. It also helps me better understanding the proverb "Practice makes perfect."
