机械工程专业英语词汇大都是由基本词根和曲折前缀、后缀组成的派生词。
就专业名词机械工程来说，机械的mechanical 就由mechanic和形容词后缀-al组成。
由mechanic加上不同的后缀可以表示不同的词汇，如加上-s，变成mechanics表示一门学科———力学；加上表人的后缀-ian 变成mechanician,汉语意思为机械师、技工。

主要包括词汇的特点即：双重性、派生词构成法、缩略词和复合词的使用、以及词语搭配现象；翻译技巧主要从直译和转译方面进行讨论。

机械英语的特点是范围广,专业性强,注重条理性和逻辑性。
近年来,新领域、新课题的不断出现更拓展了机械英语的深度和广度,这就对机械英语的翻译提出了更新更高的求，本文就机械英语词汇的某些特点和翻译技巧作一些探讨。
二、机械英语的词汇特点 1．双重性，即一词多义性。
许多人在听英语授课或演讲时，常常会遇到“听清了”但“没听懂”这样的情况。
造成此种情形的原因很大程度上是由于英语中一词多义，一义多词的想象很普遍。
比如：do，make,take,这类普通动词在口语中，其词义多的惊人。
像body, work 这样一些很普通的词，用在不同的专业中，所表示的概念也不同。
work 在金属工艺方面，表示“工件”、“工作物”、 “加工”、“作业”、“工作”；在机械工程方面，表示“结构”、“机构”、“构件”；在电学方面，则表示“工作”、“制品＂等。
在机械英语中存在着大量的普通词汇，除基本词义外，在此领域又有不同的词义。
如 “film”一词，其基本词义是“电影，胶片”，而在机械英语中就是 “薄膜，膜层”的意思；“blank”,其基本词义是“空白”，而在机械英语中就是“坯料，半成品”；“wear”,其基本词义是“穿”，在此就是“磨损”的意思。
2．由派生词(derivation)构成。
机械英语词汇由大量的派生词构成，主要是由前缀（prefix）与后缀(suffix) 构成. 前缀主要有：①semi-(半), 如: semidiameter （半径）， semiautomatic （半自动的 ），semicontinuous （半连续的，断断续续的）；②non-（否定）：nonferrous(有色的，非铁或钢的),noninterference (不互相干扰)， nonparallelism (不平行度);③dis-(分开，离开):disassembly (拆卸,分解),disclose(揭露,,泄漏) , displacement(位移);后缀包括:名词后缀，动词后缀，形容词后缀. 构成名词后缀的有①-ity：machinability (机械加工性，切削性), impurity (杂质),ductility (展延性，柔韧性); ②-ness:stiffness (刚度，刚性) clearness(清晰度) brittleness (脆性，脆度); ③-tion: tension（张力），atomization (雾化，粉化),deviation (偏差，偏移);构成动词的后缀：①-ize: photosensitize(使感光：使具感光性), conceptualize(形成概念,使概念化), polymerize(使聚合); ②-en: lighten(减轻，使发亮), strengthen( 使加强), lengthen (使变长); ③-ify: verify (校验，核实), specify(规定), amplify(放大，增强)；构成形容词后缀的有：①-al colloidal(胶态的，胶体的), cylindrical(圆筒形的),detrimental(有害的);②–ive: adhesive(带粘性的，),iterative(重复的，反复的), abrasive(研磨的)；③-ous: vitreous(玻璃状的，透明的), aqueous(水的，含水的), amorphous(无定性的，非晶体的)。
3．缩略词(abbreviation)的大量使用机械英语中,为了简洁、直观和术语规范化,使用了为数不少的缩略词,如:CAD (computer-aided design) 计算机辅助设计，CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) 计算机辅助制造, CAE (computer-aided engineering) 计算机辅助工程，ICG (interactive computer graphic) 交互式计算机图形学，PABLA (problem analysis by logic approach) 逻辑法问题分析，PDS (product design specification) 产品设计规格, CNC (computer numerical control) 计算机数字控制，MIS (management information system) 管理信息系统，MSE (manufactory system engineering) 制造系统工程。
4．复合词(compounding)占多数。
复合词顾名思义是由一些词汇复合形成的，这些复合词在英语中的比重也很大。
一种是由连字符的。
如：blank-holder 坯缘压牢器，cold-drawing 冷拔、冷拉，cut-to-length 按定尺剪切，crossed-axis 轴交叉的，die-punch 模具-冲头，finite-element 有限元，full-size 实际大小。
另一种是不带连字符的。
如：sleeve bearing 滑动轴承，slotted nut 有槽螺母，shot blasting 喷砂处理，split rivet 开口铆钉，surface finish 表面光洁度，tail stock 尾架。

在机械英语中,仅用一个词就可以和其它词搭配成很多的专业术语的想象屡见不鲜。
以 “ignition”一词为例: ignition 点火；ignition accelerator 着火加速剂；ignition advance 提前点火；ignition advance angle 点火提前角；ignition apparatus 点火装置；ignition coil 点火线圈；ignition contact 点火接点；ignition control lever 发火杆；再如“iron”一词，iron 铁，iron carbon alloy 铁碳合金；iron carbon diagram 铁 碳状态图；iron core 铁芯；iron foundry 铸铁车间；iron hand 机械手；iron losses 铁损；iron powder 铁粉；iron vitriol 绿矾；iron works 炼铁厂〔3〕在机械英语中,这类词数量多,范围广，平时我们要多注意积累和整理。
三、机械英语词汇的翻译及要注意的问题。
1．名词的直译。
大多数名词都可按词的本义和原词性直接照译出来。
对于名词性的专业术语、专有名词和缩写词等除可采取照意译法外，还可运用照音译法和照形译法。
例如：①workpiece(工件), gearshaft(齿轮轴),weld bead(焊缝)。
②只有当电子流过导体时，电子才能传送能量。
It is only when electrons move through a conductor that can transfer energy.③sonar(声纳), radar(雷达),valve(阀),amp(安培).④V-notch(V形切口),I-bar(I字钢),U-steel(U型钢2．动词的直译。
英汉语中的谓语行为动词大都可按字面意义照译。
①用的最多的英语连系动词 “ｂｅ”的谓语变化形式和汉语“是”或“为”一般可以照译。
例如Since the shore is long, we cannot make the assumption that the distribution of normal force is uniform.因为闸瓦较长，因此不能假定法向力是均匀的。
②英语动词不定式作句子主语时，多数可照译为汉英译句的主语。
例如：用欧姆表测试晶体管是一个简便的方法。
It is a handy method to test the transistor with an ohmmeter. ③英语句中表示概念的动名词和汉语中表示抽象技术概念的动、名兼类词，可按照原意照译。
例如：Different machines can perform cutting,milling, drilling,grinding,forging,pressing,rolling,drawing,etc.不同的机床可以进行切、铣、磨、锻、压、轧、拉等不同工作。
④英语中一些作时间、条件、原因、行为方式或伴随情况状语的分词短语与相应词组可以照译。
转译法及其要注意的一些问题。
3．名词的转译。
机械英语中表达动作概念的动名词、具有动作意义的抽象行为名词、由动词派生的名词等，往往都可以根据具体情况转换成汉语动词。
例如：For ductile materials the yield points is easily observable because of the sudden drop in the load.对于韧性材料，由于载荷突然下降，其屈服点很容易观测到。
Lead holes are necessary for the application of self-tapping or drive screws.在使用自攻丝螺钉和传动螺杆时，导孔是必要的。
在这一句中，“application ”这个名词在译为汉语时变成动词。
汉语中的名词有时可转换成英语的动词、代词、副词、或连词。
例如：金属切削加工在制造业中得到了广泛的应用。
Metal-cutting processes are extensively used in manufacturing industry. 此处“应用 ”一词就是译成了动词。
4．动词的转译。
英语中某些谓语动词不宜照译为汉语动词，而应转译成汉语名词，这样才符合汉语习惯。
