One good thing is the return of two kinds of trees, which grow only near streams. They had nearly disappeared since the wolves were gone. There was a reason for this. The wolves scare away elk(麋鹿), which are animals that eat trees growing out of the ground. Now elk avoid spending time near streams in the park. They have no place to run from wolves there. The trees that disappeared near streams now grow in the park.Yellowstone National Park, “America's first national park,” is in the northwest part of Wyoming. It spreads into Idaho and Montana. It became a park in 1872. The park is beautiful and has many visitors.Wolves were common in the park at first. As time went on, the wolves began dying out. They were people who cared about animals and the health of the land. At first, this was only a dream since there were no wolves in the park!Wolves were in Canada, which is north of the United States. People went to Canada to catch wolves. They brought them back to the park and let them go. They kept close track of the wolves' actions. When a wolf died, they would figure out the reason. A lot was done to protect the wolves from harm.Yet, farmers also complained that the wolves were eating their animals. In 1997, they tried to get rid of(摆脱) the wolves by passing a law to remove them from the park. The law was never passed. Now, there are many wolves in Yellowstone National Park. The land is healthier, and the wolves have their home back.1.Why did two kinds of trees disappear along the streams in the park? I had reduced my backpack down to only essentials. It was laundry day in the mid-sized Indonesian city I happened to be in, meaning I was down to my last shirt, the least flattering shirt of my seven-day collection: a ratty conference T-shirt of a well-known American company I'd worn a hundred times. It was a shirt I didn't feel particularly flattering in, so I tried to stay indoors and used it as an opportunity to have a quiet, indoor day.I hadn't thought anything of the shirt until a young Indonesian man staying at my guest house saw me and immediately took notice of the logo of my ratty shirt. He was fascinated by it!“Where did you get this shirt? Did you go to this conference? I love this company! I wish I could buy this here in Indonesia.” I was moved by the idea that something I found so useless and unflattering could be valued so much by someone else. Without giving it another thought, I took off the ratty old shirt and gave it to him on the spot, leaving me shamelessly shirtless for the rest of laundry day, but content that I had found a better owner for my shirt.A month later, I was still traveling, with six shirts instead of seven, yet still rich in my items and with a fuller heart.1.The u nderlined word “essentials” in Paragraph 1 means . This is wonderful advice for a friendship, because it is really the only way to make sure that you are giving your friends everything you would want to be given in a friendship.Whenever you have a question about how you should treat a friend,it iseasy to find an answer simply by asking yourself what you would like your friend to do for you, if he or she is in your shoes.Even if you're always thinking about how you'd like to be treated, and your friends are too, there are problems that come up from time to time in each friendship, and it is important to understand how to deal with these problems so that you can build stronger and healthier friendships.Problems like friends getting boyfriends or girlfriends and not spending enough time with their friends,or even friends finding new friends and leaving old friends behind are problems that will probably come up with one or more of your friendships. It is important to know how to deal with these problems so that you can keep your friends and make new ones.No one wants to have a broken friendship.5.According to the writer, problems with friendships may appear when . I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humor, but sadly reading isn't one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can't read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads e-mails, websites and papers for work, but not books. He's busy so I think sitting down to read for just 15 minutes a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading. My dad is by no means the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relaxon their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there're lots of benefits to reading, which screen-based activities don't have.Firstly, it's better for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed, to get a good night's sleep. One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world—I would often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax.I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people's point of view, and understand other people's decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling—you really can be inside someone else's head!So give it a go! They feel heavy pressures from their parents. Most students are always told by their parents to study harder and better so that they can have a wonderful life in the future. Though this may be a good idea for those very bright students, it can have terrible results for many students who are not gifted enough. Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have their parents lose hope. Such students feel that they are hated by everyone else they meet and they don't want to go to school any longer. They become dropouts. It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers' work to help their children. To make matters worse, a lot of parents force their children to those schools opening in the evenings and on weekends—they only help the students to pass the exams and never teach them any real sense of the world. Many Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students' hair to their clothes and things in their schoolbags. Child psychologists now think that such strict rules are harmful to the feelings of the students. Almost 40% of the students said that no one had taught them how to get on with others, how to tell right from wrong and how to show love and care for others, even for their parents.5.“Dropouts” are those who . And doctors took away both of his eyes before he was fourteen months old.Soon after, however, he started to do an amazing thing. He started to make clicking(咔嗒) sounds with his tongue(舌头) to help him move around. Much like a bat(蝙蝠), he now moves about using sonar(声呐). He is so good at it that he can ride a bicycle in traffic. In this interview with National Geographic, Kish explains how the process works. How does sonar work?“When I make a clicking sound, it makes sound waves. These waves reflect(反射) off surfaces all around and return to my ears. My brain then processes the sounds into images(图像). It's like having a conversation with the environment.”When you click, what do you see in your mind?“Each click is like a camera flash. I make a 3D image of the things around me for hu ndreds of feet in every direction.”What is it like riding a bike using sonar?“It's exciting and enjoyable but requires a lot of focus. I click up to two times per second, much more than I usually do.”Is it dangerous to move around the world in this way?“Much of the world lives in fear of things that we mostly imagine. It is one of the most popular English songs of all time. Here's the story behind it.The song was written by two sisters from Kentucky, Mildred and Patty Smith Hill. It was first published under the title of “Good Morning to All” in 1893. Teachers sang it each day to welcome their students to the classroom. The composer, Mildred Hill, was a concert pianist. Her sister Patty Smith Hill wrote the original lyrics for the song while she was a teacher in a kindergarten in Louisville, Kentucky, where Mildred also taught. The Hill sisters copyrighted their song on October 16, 1893. However, it appeared without their agreement in Robert H. Coleman's songbook on March 4,1924. Coleman changed part of the lyrics to say,“Happy Birthday to You”,although the song stillhad its original title. The song was then published several times over the next ten years, often with small changes in the lyrics. In 1934, when the song was sung every night in a Broadway Musical, another Hill sister, Jessica, went to court over the copyright problem of the song. She was angry about the theft of the song and the failure to pay to her sisters. She won her case. The Hill family owned the rights to the melody and had to be paid every time the song was part of a commercial production. The Hill sisters, who devoted their lives to educating children, could never imagine that the simple little song would continue to earn about $2 million every year.1.What's the “Happy Birthday to You” song written for at first?()A.Celebrating a person's birthday.B.Welcoming students to the classroom.C.Greeting friends when they meet.D.Playing in a party to welcome someone.2.According to the passage, which is the right order? ()A.why the “Happy Birthday to You” song is sung in outer spaceB.the story of the “Happy Birthday to You” songC.the way the sisters get back the copyrightD.the sisters make money by writing the simple little songPassage 2[2020·原创]Blue whales love to sing. Males sing to attract mates and to communicate across long distances. People are capable of hearing only certain parts of a whale song, so scientists use special audio equipment to record and study the songs in detail. Over several decades, they've noticed that the songs have gotten lower in pitch. Pitch describes how high or low a sound is.Emmanuelle Leroy and a team of scientists now think they know why. They've studied more than a million songs from five groups of whales. Last fall, the team's report was published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans. It sheds light on why the pitch of whale songs has gotten lower: Whales aren't singing as loudly as they used to.So why are whales singing more softly? Leroy's study presents two hypotheses(假设). The first is that there are more whales. Before the 1970s, commercial whale hunting brought whale populations near extinction. But starting in 1985, the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling. As the whale population has increased, whales have generally begun to live closer together. And if the whales are closer together, they don't have to sing as loudly to communicate. The study's second hypothesis is that the pitch of whale songs has dropped due to climate change. An increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has made ocean water more acidic, changing its acoustics(传声效果). Now the songs can be heard from farther away, so the whales don't have to sing as loudly. But for the environment, water that's more acidic could be damaging to some marine life.Leroy says that confirming either hypothesis would require more research. “We would need to understand how the blue wha les emit the song,” she says. But that would mean studying individual whales which is hard to do. Scientists continue to study whale songs. Each study adds to our understanding. “Maybe our hypotheses will be proven in 10 years,” Leroy says.“Science is often a journey.”5.What do scientists find after they study the whale songs? ()A.The pitch of the whale songs has become lower.B.Whales are singing as loudly to communicate.C.Whales aren't singing more softly.D.The pitch of the whales doesn't change.6.According to the two hypotheses, which is not right? ()mercial whale hunting is the reason for decrease in the number of whales.B.The whales live closer so they don't have to sing as loudly.C.Climate change leads to the lower pitch of whale songs.D.Water that's more acidic is good for the environment too.7.The underlined word “that” refers to . ()A.confirming either hypothesisB.more researchC.understanding how the blue whales emit the songD.knowing the reasons the whales singing more softly8.What can we learn from the last paragraph?()A.Scientists can prove the two hypotheses in ten years.B.Some studies are useless because they can't prove hypotheses.C.Nobody knows whether the two hypotheses can be proven or not.D.Scientists will study individual whales.【参考答案】Ⅰ.[主旨大意]本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了“我”竞选班长,但是落选了的故事。

And in some parts of the USA, you can eat rattlesnakes—some people say it tastes like chicken, but other people say it's like fish. A lot of people just say, “It's delicious!”So perhaps you are thinking, “Oh, no, please. I just want to eat chips!” Oh, yes, chips. Now they are the same in every country, right? Wrong!
