1970年，回到中国台湾，受张其昀邀聘在中国文化大学 德文系、哲学系任教。1972年，三毛接受了在网球场上 结识的一位年龄较长的德国教师的求婚，但因未婚夫猝 逝 ，她再赴西班牙，与分开六年的荷西重逢 。
1984年，因健康关系，辞卸教职，前往美国接受割治子宫癌手术，随后以 写作、演讲为生活重心 。 1987年3月，出版有声书《三毛说书》；7月，出版散文集《我的宝贝》， 向读者们展示了她珍藏多年的一些物品 。 1989年4月，首次回到大陆的家乡，并专程拜访漫画《三毛流浪记》的作 者张乐平先生，了却了夙愿 。1990年，创作完成了第一部中文剧本，也是 她的最后一部作品《滚滚红尘》 。 1991年1月2日，因子宫内膜肥厚，三毛住进台湾荣民总医院，并于1月3日 完成了手术；4日清晨，医院女工发现了被尼龙丝袜吊颈的三毛遗体，现 场未发现遗书，法医推断三毛的死亡时间是1月4日凌晨2点，终年47岁 。
1973年，受到美国《国家地理杂志》的吸引，三 毛邀请荷西一起前往西属撒哈拉沙漠。 1974年，与荷西在沙漠小镇阿尤恩举行了简单的 婚礼。 1974年10月6日，她的一篇名为《中国饭店》的 作品在《联合报》副刊刊出，这篇描写自己异国 婚姻的作品在当时吸引了大批读者 。
1976年2月，受政治形势影响，三毛与荷西离开西属撒 哈拉，前往西班牙属地加那利群岛；5月，受到当时 《联合报》主编的鼓励，三毛出版了第一部散文集《撒 哈拉的故事》，以一个流浪者的口吻，讲述了她与荷西 在撒哈拉沙漠零散的生活细节和个人感受 。
