莱特兄弟发明飞机的过程的英语作文The Amazing Wright Brothers and Their Flying MachineHi, my name is Jamie and I'm going to tell you all about the Wright Brothers and how they invented the first airplane! It's such an awesome story. The Wright Brothers were Wilbur and Orville Wright and they were from Dayton, Ohio. They owned a bicycle shop together and loved everything about mechanics and engineering. One day in 1899, Wilbur read about this German guy named Otto Lilienthal who had been experimenting with gliders and flying. Lilienthal had written a book called "Bird Flight as the Basis of Aviation" and it got Wilbur super interested in flying machines. He started writing letters to the Smithsonian Institution asking for any information they had about aeronautics and flying. The Wright Brothers were really smart and did a ton of research before they even started building anything. They studied birds and how they flew. They read everything they could find on flight and aviation experiments from scientists before them. They also corresponded with other inventors working on flying machines at the time. After a couple years of research and planning, the Wright Brothers decided to start building their first full-size glider and finding a good place to test it. In 1900, they chose Kitty Hawk, North Carolina because of the wind conditions and soft sandy areas for landing. Their glider had a small horizontal front elevator and a larger curved rear rudder. It was made of muslin stretched over a lightweight wooden frame. When they first tested the glider in 1900, it didn't really work very well at all. The Wright Brothers realized they had gotten some of their wind calculations wrong. So they went back to Dayton, built a wind tunnel, and conducted tons of other experiments over the next few years. They were super dedicated and worked really, really hard. Finally in 1903, they had a new glider design ready to go. It had a sturdy spruce frame, muslin covering, dual rudder system, and a gasoline engine. On December 14th, they went back to the wind-swept sand dunes of Kitty Hawk to make their historic first flight attempt.Wilbur and Orville tossed a coin to see who would get to be the first pilot. Wilbur won the toss but the wind was too high that morning, so they didn't fly until later in the day. At 10:35 am onDecember 17th, 1903, Orville laid down on the lower wing and was the first pilot. He was terrified but excited!Using this neat little device called a monoplane wing-warp that twisted the wings to control the plane's motion side-to-side, Orville took off down the 60 foot runway. The little engine propelled the plane forward and it lifted up into the air! He flew for just 12 seconds and traveled 120 feet, but it was the first powered, heavier-than-air, controlled flight in history! Amazing! After Orville's short first flight, they took turns making three more flights that morning, with Wilbur piloting the longest one of 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. The airplane only flew about 10 feet high at its peak, but it was a huge breakthrough. The brothers were so excited, but also very humble about their amazing invention. They sent a famous telegraph to their family simply saying: "Success four flights thursday morning all against twenty one mile wind started from Level with engine power alone averagelSpeed through air thirty-one miles longest 57 seconds Inform Home Friends."News of their incredible achievement spread slowly at first, but people began to realize this was a groundbreaking invention that could transform transportation forever. The Wright Brothers became famous inventors and aviation pioneers. Over the nextfew years they continued improving their designs and flew higher and longer distances. In 1905, they traveled to France and Britain to showcase their flying machine to Americans and Europeans who were also working on early airplanes. The brothers made dozens of really impressive flights, including Wilbur circling the Statue of Liberty on one journey over New York! People were stunned to see an airplane flying overhead for the first time. After their great success, the Wright Brothers worked on developing their invention for military use, training pilots, and founding some early airlines and flight schools. They accomplished so much and are true American heroes for giving the gift of flight to the world. The next time you see an airplane cruising across the sky, remember the two ingenious bicycle mechanics from Ohio who never gave up on their dream, did years of research and hard work, and invented that very first little flying machine that made it all possible. The Wright Brothers are an inspiration!。

关于莱特兄弟制造飞机的英语作文The Wright Brothers and the Birth of AviationIn the annals of human history, few inventions have had as profound an impact as the airplane. The ability to take to the skies, soar above the earth, and traverse vast distances with ease has revolutionized the way we live, work, and interact with the world around us. At the heart of this revolutionary change lies the pioneering efforts of two brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, who forever changed the course of aviation. The Wright brothers were born in Dayton, Ohio, in the late 19th century. From a young age, they displayed a keen interest in the natural world and a thirst for knowledge. Wilbur, the elder of the two, was known for his intellectual curiosity and analytical mind, while Orville, the younger brother, was a skilled mechanic and tinkerer. Together, they formed an unbeatable team, driven by a shared passion for the dream of human flight. The brothers' journey to the creation of the first successful powered, heavier-than-air aircraft began with a fascination for the work of other aviation pioneers. They closely followed the experiments andpublications of renowned figures like Otto Lilienthal, a German engineer who had made significant strides in glider design and flight. Inspired by Lilienthal's work, the Wright brothers embarked on their own journey of experimentation and innovation. One of the key factors that set the Wright brothers apart was their meticulous approach to the problem of flight. Rather than relying on intuition or guesswork, they meticulously studied the principles of aerodynamics, conducted extensive wind tunnel tests, and carefully documented their findings. This scientific rigor allowed them to develop a deeper understanding of the forces at play, enabling them to design and build aircraft that were more stable and controllable than those of their predecessors. The Wright brothers' first major breakthrough came in 1902, when they successfully designed and built a glider that could be controlled in flight. This was a significant achievement, as previous gliders had been notoriously unstable and difficult to control. By incorporating innovative design features, such as a system of wing-warping that allowed for lateral control, the Wright brothers demonstrated their mastery of the principles of flight. With the success of their glider experiments, the brothers turned their attention to the development of a powered aircraft. This proved to be a formidable challenge, as they had to overcome numeroustechnical hurdles, including the design of a lightweight engine and the development of a suitable propulsion system. Undaunted, the Wright brothers continued to experiment, test, and refine their designs, driven by their unwavering determination to achieve the dream of powered flight. On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers made history when they successfully completed the first powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air aircraft. This momentous event, which took place at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, was the culmination of years of painstaking work and countless hours of trial and error. The flight lasted just 12 seconds and covered a distance of only 120 feet, but it marked the beginning of a new era in human transportation and exploration. In the years that followed, the Wright brothers continued to refine and improve their aircraft designs, setting new records and pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible. They traveled extensively, demonstrating their inventions to audiences around the world and inspiring a new generation of aviators and engineers. The legacy of the Wright brothers extends far beyond their own achievements. Their pioneering work laid the foundation for the rapid development of aviation technology in the 20th century, paving the way for the emergence of commercial air travel, militaryaviation, and the space exploration programs of the future. Their unwavering commitment to scientific inquiry, their attention to detail, and their willingness to take risks in pursuit of their dreams serve as an inspiration to innovators and dreamers in every field.Today, the Wright brothers' legacy continues to shape the world we live in. Their story reminds us that with determination, ingenuity, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome. The Wright brothers' triumph over the seemingly impossible dream of human flight stands as a testament to the power of human creativity and the transformative potential of innovation.。

It's a super amazing story of two regular guys who never gave up on their dream of soaring through the sky.Wilbur and Orville Wright were just a couple of ordinary brothers who lived in Dayton, Ohio at the end of the 1800s. Their dad edited a newspaper and their mom loved sharing her sense of humor and curiosity with her kids. Wilbur and Orville were always tinkering and making things. One day in 1899, the brothers read about this aeronaut named Wilbur Chanute who had been trying to make a flying machine. His gliders kept crashing, but the Wright Brothers thought they could do better. They were totally obsessed with figuring out how to fly!First thing they did was write letters to the Smithsonian Institute to get every book and report they could find aboutaeronautics. Smart move! The bros read everything and took tons of notes on wing shapes, materials, and flight theories. After a year of research, they felt ready to start testing their own designs. In 1900 they built their first glider and went to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to try it out. This spot was perfect because it was right beside a huge sandy dune and got steady winds. On their first few attempts, the glider didn't really fly at all. It kinda just tumbled back to the ground. Whoops! But the brothers didn't give up. Nope, they went back to Dayton and built a breezy wind tunnel to test out different wing shapes. This helped them figure out that curved wings create more lift than flat ones. With this new knowledge, they rebuilt the glider and headed back to Kitty Hawk. The 1901 glider worked way better and the Wrights learned how to control it by shifting their body weight. Orville and Wilbur took turns gliding hundreds of feet through the air! They were getting so close to achieving powered flight.Back home again, they got to work on an engine and propeller system light enough to lift their machine off the ground. They asked for help from gearheads and engine experts until they built the perfect little motor. In 1903, it was finally time. The Wright Flyer was ready for its big debut on the windy dunes of Kitty Hawk. After a couple failed attempts, Wilbur climbed aboard and gave it a go on December 14th. The flyer stayed up for just 12 seconds, but it was the first self-propelled, heavier-than-air flight in history!Later that same day, Orville flew for almost a whole minute and went 852 feet. The age of aviation had begun! Those brothers turned a crazy dream into reality through curiosity, hard work, and perseverance. From there, Wilbur and Orville kept improving their incredible flying machines. They got their pilots licenses in 1910 and performed all kinds of demonstrations across America and Europe. Crowds were amazed to see humans soaring overhead in a gasoline-powered craft. The Wright Brothers are true American heroes who never stopped believing they could conquer the sky. Thanks to their world-changing invention, air travel and space exploration eventually became possible. All because two ordinary fellas from Ohio spent years chasing an extraordinary dream!Pretty neat, huh? Who knows what amazing advancements will happen next if we keep aiming high like Wilbur and Orville. Dream big and never quit trying new things. That's how theWright Brothers solved the secrets of flight and you can make the impossible possible too!篇2The Daring Dream of the Wright BrothersDo you like to ride your bike really fast? Can you imagine pedaling so hard that your bicycle lifted off the ground and you started flying through the air? That sounds crazy, but that's exactly what two brothers named Wilbur and Orville Wright dreamed of doing over 100 years ago!Back in 1899, nobody had ever flown a powered aircraft before. Some people had experimented with gliders that could glide through the air for a little bit, but they always came crashing back down to earth. The Wright brothers lived in Dayton, Ohio and owned a little bicycle shop, but they spent all their free time trying to figure out how to build a flying machine. At first, their flying experiments didn't go so well. In 1899, they used a small wind tunnel to test different wing shapes and wrote down everything they learned in their notebooks. The next few years, they built bigger and bigger gliders and flew them off the big sand dunes near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Can you imagine running along the beach, pulling a huge glider with yourhands, and then letting it go to see if it would fly? That must have been so exciting! The Wright brothers kept making mistakes and crashing their gliders, but instead of giving up, they learned from every single crash. Little by little, experiment by experiment, they started unlocking the secrets of aerodynamics and control. By 1902, their gliders could soar through the air for almost a minute at a time! But the Wright brothers knew that to truly fly, they needed an engine to power their aircraft, not just the wind. So in 1903, they added a small gasoline engine to one of their glider designs. On December 17, 1903, they went to the windswept beach at Kitty Hawk once again. This time, they weren't just testing a glider, but their first real powered aircraft!Wilbur ran alongside holding one wingtip while the engine roared to life. When he let go, the little aircraft called the Wright Flyer lifted off the ground and flew for 12 amazing seconds! Orville ran alongside as Wilbur brought the Flyer back down for a safe landing on the beach. They had done it - they had achieved powered flight for the first time in history!Of course, the first few flights were very short and covered less than the length of a football field. But the Wright brotherskept improving their designs over the next few years. By 1905, they were flying their aircraft for up to half an hour and doing incredible aerial tricks like figure-eights and banking turns. Can you imagine how excited they must have felt as their dreams came true? All those years of crashing gliders and fixing engines had finally paid off. They had unlocked the secrets of flight control through their wind tunnel experiments and risky test flights. When news of their incredible flying machines started spreading around the world, hardly anyone believed it at first. After all, every scientist had always said that human flight was impossible. The Wright brothers had to put on exhibitions in France and other countries before people started to accept that the age of aviation had truly begun.Within just a few years, other inventors were building their own airplanes and breaking the Wright brothers' records. Aviation went from being a crashing pile of broken wood to an amazing new industry. The Wright brothers' little bicycle shop in Dayton became a landmark that people visited to honor their incredible achievement. The next time you see a bird soaring through the sky or an airplane roaring overhead, remember the two bicycle mechanicsfrom Ohio who never stopped dreaming and experimenting until they unlocked the secrets of flight control and aerodynamics. Wilbur and Orville Wright proved that if you work hard and persevere through every setback, you can make the impossible possible!篇3How the Wright Brothers Figured Out How to FlyDo you ever look up at the sky and see an airplane flying high above? I sure do! And every time I see one, I think about the Wright Brothers - Wilbur and Orville. They were the first people ever to fly an airplane! Can you believe it? It wasn't that long ago that nobody could fly at all. But the Wright Brothers worked really hard, did a ton of experiments, and finally cracked the secret of flight. Let me tell you all about their amazing story!Wilbur and Orville grew up in Dayton, Ohio. Their mom was very smart and taught them a lot at home. Their dad gave them a toy helicopter when they were little kids, which got them super interested in flying machines. As they got older, they started a printing business together. But they never lost their dream of flying. In 1899, Wilbur wrote a letter to the Smithsonian Institution asking for help learning about aeronautics (that's the study of flying things). They sent him some books and materials on flying experiments that had been done before. Wilbur read everything very carefully, but he noticed that a lot of the information seemed wrong or didn't make much sense. That's when he realized nobody really knew exactly how flying worked yet!Wilbur and Orville decided they would have to figure it out themselves through experiments. They started off by making hundreds of wind tunnel tests to study how air flows over different shapes of wings. This helped them design wings that would give them the lift they needed to fly. It was complicated stuff, but they kept very careful notes on everything.Next, the brothers built a small wind tunnel of their own to test different wing shapes and angles. They made tons of models and tried them out one by one, writing down what worked and what didn't. They were very patient and scientific about everything. When they felt ready, the Wrights built a huge kite with a size of 500 square feet! They wanted to see how their wings would work with a man laying on them. A friend helped them test it out on some windy days, and it worked pretty well. Thisgave them more confidence that humans could fly with the right wings. Now they needed something with an engine to power their flying machine. They wrote to lots of engine companies but none of them made the lightweight engine they needed. So they had to come up with their own design for a small, light gasoline engine. It took them a long time to get it right, but they kept at it.While working on the engine, the Wrights were also figuring out how to steer and control whatever they built for flight. Most people thought you just needed to keep adjusting the wings, but the Brothers realized you also needed another way to balance and steer the aircraft. So they came up with an incredibly smart "wing warping" system using wires and pulleys. By twisting one way or the other, they could angle the wings to turn or balance. Genius! With their wings, lightweight engine, and controls figured out, it was finally time to try building their first real flying machine in 1903. They went to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina because of the strong steady winds there. On December 17th, everything was ready to go.Wilbur was supposed to go first, but after doing a quick pre-flight test, he noticed a crack in one of the machine's woodstrips. So Orville took the first turn. At 10:35 am, with Wilbur running alongside to help balance it, the craft built by the Wright Brothers left the ground and stayed up for 12 whole seconds! Orville flew 120 feet, then landed. Later that day, they made three more short flights, with the longest going 852 feet in 59 seconds. Can you imagine how incredibly excited the Wright Brothers must have felt? After years of work, planning, and persistence - human beings could finally fly! Of course, their first airplane didn't look anything like the huge jets we have today. It had a tiny engine, was made of wood and cloth, and could barely get off the ground. But those first few modest flights on the cold windy sands of Kitty Hawk completely changed the world forever. The Wright Brothers didn't stop there, though. They spent the next few years improving their designs, building stronger engines, and flying higher and farther each time. By 1905 they could fly for half an hour at a time! But getting people to believe what they had done was really tough at first. A lot of people thought the Wrights were making the whole thing up. Some even accused them of using a fake "buck-the-wind" catapult instead of really flying. It took a while, but Wilbur and Orville kept doing demonstrations to prove themselves. They gave interviews, showed off their planes, and took people up for short rides. Newspapers around the world finally started reporting on the "Flyingmachine Brothers" and their amazing invention. The Wrights were offered contracts to build planes in France, Germany, and the United States. Wilbur helped train the first pilots at flying schools they opened up.Sadly, Wilbur died of typhoid fever in 1912. But Orville kept working on airplanes and promoting flight for many more years. He got to see planes become bigger, faster, and able to carry lots of people and cargo. All because he and his brother spent years tinkering in a little workshop, being curious and doing experiment after experiment until they unlocked the secret of human flight. The story of the Wright Brothers shows that with patience, hard work, and never giving up on your dreams, you really can do amazing things that change the whole world. Every time I see an airplane flying overhead, I'll remember Wilbur and Orville and feel inspired to follow my own curiosity and interests as far as they'll take me!篇4The Daring Wright Brothers and Their Flying MachineHi everyone! Today I'm going to tell you an amazing story about two very clever and brave brothers named Wilbur and Orville Wright. These two guys did something totally incredible - they built the very first airplane and made the first powered flight! Can you imagine? Before them, nobody had ever flown in a machine that could take off from the ground by itself. The Wrights unlocked the secret of flight and proved that humans could soar through the skies like birds. It's one of the most amazing accomplishments in history!Wilbur and Orville were born in the 1800s in a little town called Dayton, Ohio. From a young age, they were super curious about how things worked. They spent a lot of time tinkering away, taking machines apart and putting them back together again. Their mom supported their curiosity and gave them a toy helicopter when they were little kids. That got them really interested in flying! As the Wright brothers grew up, they opened a bicycle shop together. But they never stopped dreaming about flying machines and reading everything they could about aeronautics - the science of flight. They became obsessed with trying to crack the problem of human flight using an airplane with an engine. At the time, lots of other inventors and scientists were trying to build flying machines too. A few even had some limited successes with gliders - planes without engines that could glide small distances after being launched from a hill or tall tower. But nobody had figured out how to build a plane that could take off from flat ground and stay up in the air for a nice long flight powered by an engine. That was the Wrights' grand goal!First, Wilbur and Orville built a wind tunnel to test different wing designs. A wind tunnel is a passage that blows air over objects to see how they move through the air. By doing ton of experiments in their wind tunnel, the brothers uncovered some totally new principles about aerodynamics - the way air flows over wings to create lift. Their wind tunnel tests allowed them to design brand-new wings that were much more efficient than anything anyone had built before.Next, the brothers built a bunch of gliders - airplane-like machines without engines - and traveled to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to test them out. Kitty Hawk was a perfect place for their experiments because it had tall sandy hills that created lots of wind to keep the gliders aloft. Over the course of several years, the Wrights launched their gliders into the air hundreds of times. Each time they gathered more data and improved their designs. When they felt ready, Wilbur and Orville installed a small gasoline engine on one of their gliders to transform it into a powered airplane. They added propellers to be spun by the engine to provide thrust to move the plane forward through the air. Since they knew adding the engine's heavy weight would make the plane harder to get off the ground, they also built a small catapult track to help launch their plane at takeoff. Finally, on December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers were ready for their big attempt at powered flight. The wind was blowing hard on that cold winter morning at Kitty Hawk. First, Wilbur ran alongside the plane and let it go after 40 feet. The plane rose into the air, flying an incredible 120 feet before the engine stalled and the craft came back down. A few hours later, Orville took his turn piloting, and flew an even more amazing 852 feet!Though their flights on that historic day were short - the longest was under a minute - the Wright Brothers had achieved something phenomenal. They had unlocked the secret of powered flight and invented the world's first successful airplane! The whole world was amazed when news of their accomplishment spread.Over the next few years, Wilbur and Orville kept making improvements to their designs. They built sturdier planes that could fly higher and stay aloft much longer. Their flying exhibitions across America and Europe helped prove that their Flying Machine was not just a lucky fluke, but a true scientific breakthrough. The Age of Aviation had begun! The Wright Brothers became world-famous inventors and heroes. But they remained humble, hardworking guys from small-town America who followed their curiosity and persevered until they achieved their wildest dream. Wilbur sadly passed away from illness in 1912, but Orville lived until 1948, long enough to witness airplanes becoming a practical way for people to travel all over the world. So the next time you're on an airplane, cruising high above the clouds, remember the daring Wright Brothers and their remarkable Flying Machine that first took to the skies on that cold December morning in 1903. Their story shows that with hard work, ingenuity, and perseverance, you can make the impossible possible and turn even your most far-fetched dreams into reality!篇5The Wright Brothers and Their Flying MachineMy name is Jamie and I'm going to tell you all about the Wright Brothers and how they became the first people to fly an airplane! Isn't that so cool?Wilbur and Orville Wright were two brothers who lived in Dayton, Ohio at the end of the 1800s. They owned a little bike shop where they fixed bicycles and made their own too. But their big dream was to build a flying machine!Ever since they were little kids, Wilbur and Orville had been fascinated by the idea of flying. They loved watching birds soar through the sky and dreamed of being able to fly just like them one day. Their favorite toy was a little helicopter-like gadget their dad brought home. It was made of cork, bamboo, and paper, and the boys would throw it into the air and watch it whirl around before fluttering back down. When they were older, the Wright brothers read everything they could find about flying and aeronautics. There weren't many books or scientific studies on it back then, but they learned what they could. They realized that many earlier experiments with flying machines had failed because the pilots didn't understand the basic principles of aerodynamics and flight control.Wilbur and Orville decided they would study birds and learn how they were able to soar and glide through the air so effortlessly. They began experimenting with different wing shapes and angles to generate lift. The brothers built lots of different kite and glider models to test out their theories. Some failed, but they kept learning from their mistakes. In 1899, Wilbur wrote a famous letter to the Smithsonian Institution asking for any information and publications they had on flight. They sent him everything they could find, and this knowledge helped guide the Wright brothers' research tremendously.Using a wind tunnel they had built themselves, the brothers systematically tested over 200 different wing shapes and angles at various wind speeds. After two years of wind tunnel tests, they had discovered the ideal shape and angle to generate enough lift for an airplane to take off! They were so excited to finally understand what allowed birds and airplanes to defy gravity. With this key principle of aerodynamics solved, the Wright brothers built their first full-sized glider in 1902. They went to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to test it because the wind conditions there were perfect. The glider flew beautifully! But they still hadone big problem – how could they control the aircraft and keep it stable while in flight?Back home, Wilbur lay in a simple bicycle shop window and watched the tiny crossed strings that attached the window sashes move in the wind. He realized this could be the answer to controlling and steering the airplane! Using this idea, they designed a new steering system for roll, pitch and yaw control that twisted and warped the wings.By 1903, the Wright Flyer was ready for its first attempt at powered flight. It had a lightweight 12 horsepower gasoline engine to drive two huge wooden propellers. On December 14th, the wind at Kitty Hawk was blowing perfectly for an attempt. After a few false starts, at 10:35am, Orville climbed into the pilot's seat and signaled to Wilbur. Wilbur ran alongside holding a wing, and when the plane reached takeoff speed, he let go. The Wright Flyer lifted off and stayed aloft for 12 seconds, flying 120 feet!Orville and Wilbur took turns making a total of four flights that morning, with Wilbur's flight lasting an incredible 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. They had done it - the Wright brothers were the first to achieve powered, sustained, controlled flight! Their dreams of unlocking the secret of flight had finally come true. After returning home as heroes, the Wright brothers continued perfecting their designs. They made their first long flight of over half an hour in 1905. In 1908, they travelled to France and made countless public demonstration flights that amazed crowds across Europe. Soon, countries all over the world were trying to build better airplanes for passenger travel and war.The amazing airplane the Wright brothers built paved the way for the development of aviation as we know it today. People can now easily travel to anywhere in the world by plane in just a matter of hours. We can even explore outer space! All of this。

Brief IntroductionThe Wright brothers, Orville (August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912), were two American brothers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who were credited with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903. From 1905 to 1907, the brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft. Although not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight possible.Story:Wilbur and Orville's father was a bishop, an official of the United Brethren Church. He traveled a lot on church business. Their mother was unusual for a woman of the nineteenth century. She had completed college. She was especially good at mathematics and science. And she was good at using tools to fix things or make things. One winter day when the Wright brothers were young, all their friends were outside sliding down a hill on wooden sleds. The Wright brothers were sad, because they did not have a sled. So, Missus Wright said she would make one for them. She drew a picture of a sled. It did not look like other sleds. It was lower to the ground and not as wide. She told the boys it would be faster, because there would be less resistance from the wind when they rode on it. Missus Wright was correct. When the sled was finished, it was the fastest one around. Wilbur and Orville felt like they were flying. When Wilbur was eleven years old and Orville seven, Bishop Wright brought home a gift for them. It was a small flying machine that flew like 3)helicopters of today. It was made of paper, bamboo and cork. The motor was a rubber band that had to be turned many times until it was tight. When the person holding the toy helicopter let go, it rose straight up. It stayed in the air for a few seconds. Then it floated down to the floor. Wilbur and Orville played and played with their new toy. Finally, the paper tore and the rubber band broke. They made another one. But it was too heavy to fly. Their first flying machine failed.Their attempts to make the toy gave them a new idea. They would make kites to fly and sell to their friends. They made many designs and tested them. Finally, they had the right design. The kites flew as though they had wings. In Eighteen-Ninety-Nine, Wilbur decided to learn about all the different kinds of flying machines that had been designed and tested through the years. Wilbur wrote to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. He asked for all the information it had on flying. The Wright brothers read everything they could about people who sailed through the air under huge balloons. They also read about people who tried to fly on gliders -- planes with wings, but no motors. Then the Wright brothers began to design their own flying machine. They used the ideas they had developed from their earlier experiments with the toy helicopter, kites, and bicycles.Soon, they needed a place to test their ideas about flight. They wrote to the Weather Bureau in Washington to find the place with the best wind conditions. The best place seemed to be a thin piece of sandy land in North Carolina along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It was called Kill Devil Hill, near the town of Kitty Hawk. It had the right wind and open space. Best of all, it was private. In Nineteen-Hundred, the Wright brothers tested a glider that could carry a person. But neither the first or second glider they built had the lifting power needed for real flight. Wilbur and Orville decided that what they had read about air pressure on curved surfaces was wrong. So they built a wind tunnel two meters long in their bicycle store in Dayton, Ohio. They tested more thantwo-hundred designs of wings. These tests gave them the correct information about air pressure on curved surfaces. Now it was possible for them to design a machine that could fly.The Wright brothers built a third glider. They took it to Kitty Hawk in the summer of Nineteen-Oh-Two. They made almost one-thousand flights with the glider. Some covered more than one-hundred-eighty meters. This glider proved that they had solved most of the problems of balance in flight. By the autumn of Nineteen-Oh-Three, Wilbur and Orville had designed and built an airplane powered by a gasoline engine. The plane had wings twelve meters across. It weighed about three-hundred-forty kilograms, including the pilot. The Wright brothers returned to Kitty Hawk. On December Seventeen, Nineteen-Oh-Three, they made the world's first flight in a machine that was heavier than air and powered by an engine. Orville flew the plane thirty-seven meters. He was in the air for twelve seconds. The two brothers made three more flights that day. The longest was made by Wilbur. He flew two-hundred-sixty meters in fifty-nine seconds. Four other men watched the Wright brothers' first flights. One of the men took pictures. Few newspapers, however, noted the event.。
