1.Exercise 1: Listen to the passage and decide whether the following statements are true or false, write T for true, F for false.

老师意见:

Britain Marks 10 Years of Princess Diana’s Death

The 10th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death has resurrec ted old controversies about the “People’s Princess.” Since her death in a car crash in Paris in 1997, Diana’s legacy has been hotly debated. Some see a troubled woman who courted media attention. Others recall a warm, generous person who focused her energy on charitable causes and dared to hug AIDS victims. Australian feminist Germaine Greer described Diana as “moron” this month, but Prime Minister Gordon Brown hailed her as “extraordinary woman” who “still has the remarkable ability to move and inspire.”

Despite the debate, there is no doubt that Diana spent much of her time doing humanitarian work. She was involved in such organizations as the Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children in London, the National Aids Trust and the Leprosy Mission. The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund was established in September 1997 to continue the Princess’s humanitarian work in the United Kingdom and overseas. The fund was established with the proceeds from sales of the recording of Elton John’s performance of “Candle in the Wind”, which was played at Diana’s funeral. Samantha Rennie is a spokesperson for the fund. She said Diana used her celebrity status to draw attention to unpopular causes. “She supported causes that were in her life unpopular. You might remember pictures of her shaking hands with someone who had HIV/AIDS at a time when this was thought horrific and yet now 10 years on it seems quiet normal. Similarly she was photographed walking through minefields at a time that this was considered hugely controversial and yet now landmines have been stigmatized. So in the intervening years of course people’s attitudes change, but in many ways they change for the better.”

Simon Conway is the director of Landmine Action, which has received support from the Diana fu nd. He said Diana’s work with landmines continues to help the cause.

“I think we have seen significant progress in the last 10 years. We now have a 153 nations, three quarters of the world, have signed up to the Ottawa Treaty banning landmines, but perhaps more importantly in purely practical terms, the weapon has been completely stigmatized.”

Samantha Rennie says that though the Diana fund is no longer actively raising money, people are still making donations.

“We are making what is called proactive grants. So in a small number of very specific areas such as palliative care, that’s care for the dying in Africa, refugees and asylum seekers in the U.K. And other areas such as cluster munitions, we are working towards an international ban on cluster munitions. In these specific areas, we are actually identifying organizations with whom we have worked in the past in order to carry forward those very specific goals.”

Nearly 500 invited guests are expected to attend a memorial service in the historic Guards Chapel at Wellington Barracks in central London, where her two sons are officers in the British Army. The royal memorial service is not open to the public. Shoppers at Harrods’ department store have been invited to remain silent for two minutes on Friday along with Mohamed al Fayed, the owner, whose son, Emad, known as Dodi, died with Diana in the car crash. 1.Exercise 1 Listening for Specific Facts: Listen to the passage and answer the following questions.

老师意见:

Blair to Step Down after 10 Years in Power

He burst onto the political stage--43 years old--charismatic, smiling, articulate and

full of energy to take Britain into the 21st Century. After a sweeping election victory in 1997, Tony Blair promised a new direction.

“You, the British people have given us the chance to serve you,” said Mr. Blair. “You have put your trust in us and we say to you-- we shall repay that trust for you. We govern for you.”

He promised to revitalize the country with a dynamic, efficient approach more in tune with the new global economy. He vowed more effective social programs and brought a new, relaxed style to Number 10 Downing Street. But it wasn’t just style and an ability to connect with average people that made Tony Blair popular. Blair biographer, Anthony Seldon says it was also plain political skill.

“He won more elections than any other Labor prime minister, he changed the face of the Labor Party, he produced peace in Northern Ireland after many years of fighting.”

The Northern Ireland peace process of 1998 came to fruition less than two months ago with the formation of a unity Catholic-Protestant government for the province. Mr. Blair was in Belfast to clinch the deal.

“Northern Ireland was synonymous with conflict. People felt that it coul d not be done, indeed sometimes that it even should not be done, that the compromises involved were too ugly. Yet in the end, it was done and this holds a lesson for conflict everywhere.”

Dealing with conflicts near and abroad became a cornerstone of Mr. Blair’s interventionist foreign policy. In 1999, he argued forcefully for the international community to intervene in Kosovo. And Britain’s military intervention in the West African nation of Sierra Leone in 2000 is credited with helping bring to an end a brutal civil war there. Mr. Blair won a landslide second term in office in 2001, but then the world changed on September 11th.

“The full horror of what has happened in the United States earlier today is now becoming clearer. It is hard even to contemplate the utter carnage and terror which has engulfed so many innocent people.”

Mr. Blair stood with U.S. President George Bush, forging ever-closer ties between London and Washington. He was instrumental in making the case for action against al-Qaida in Afg hanistan and went along willingly into Iraq. Again Blair’s biographer, Anthony Seldon.

“Oh, he was completely willing. He was convinced that British interests would best be served by getting right up close to the White House, working very closely with the president, seeing him often, having weekly conferences on video with the president and this would best exert British influence.”

While Mr. Blair is widely credited with having tempered the Bush administration’s go-it-alone approach in the early preparations for Iraq, he has been harshly criticized for not being able to influence how the war and the aftermath were handled. Michael Brown, former Conservative Member of Parliament and now political columnist for the Independent Newspaper, tells VOA, Iraq was Tony Blair’s biggest mistake.

“His enduring legacy, in terms of British public life, will, I’m afraid be Iraq. Iraq will be engraved on Tony Blair’s political tombstone when the history books of his premiership are written.”

Iraq took its toll on Mr. Bla ir’s popularity and still he won a third term in office in 2005, even though the Labor party took a beating. Then in July terrorist attacks on London’s transport system claimed the lives of 52 commuters. Speculation was rife that Tony Blair would not last to the next election scheduled for 2010. That speculation proved correct.

“Today, I announce my decision to step down from the leadership of the Labor Party.” And a final word for the supporters that day, “Hand on heart, I did what I

thought was right. I may have been wrong, that is your call. But believe one thing if nothing else, I did what I thought was right for our country.” It is too early to tell how Tony Blair will eventually be remembered, but for now Iraq casts a long shadow over his legacy. Sonia Pace, VOA news, London.

Hollywood Actress Angelina Jolie Has Given Birth to Twins, a Boy and a Girl

It had to be the birth of the year, paparazzi photographers were at the ready in Nice in the south of France as news spread that Angelina Jolie had given birth to twins, one girl and one boy. Newspapers wasted no time announcing the happy news as their staff pitched outside the Lenval hospital building, scanning for any sight of happy father Brad Pitt or just about anyone else connected to the event. Jolie aged 33 picked a hospital near the glamorous Promenade des Anglais for the birth. Pitt and Jolie, seen here during their recent visit to the Cannes film festival, named the twins Vivienne Marcheline, and Knox Leon. Marcheline was the name of Angelina’s actress mother who died of cancer last year. The paparazzi were finally rewarded when Jolie’s doctor Michel Sussmann along with the mayor of Nice made an appearance on the hospital steps. Sussmann told Reuters both parents and babies were in “excellent health”. He said the caesarean section birth had been brought forward for medical reasons.

The birth drew a mixed reaction in Nice. Some were caught up in the mood of the moment. “I’m happy for them. It must have been a wonderful occasion. It always is when you have a baby, isn’t it?” Others kept a firm sense of proportion. “It’s ridiculous. (It’s ridiculous, right?) Yeah, absolutely, it’s just two people that had kids and that, just they make far too much out of it.” “Please take care of them, because with so many children I don’t know if you can do that.”

The twins bring the Pitt-Jolie brood to six. Local newspaper Nice-Matin reported that the couple had sold exclusive rights to the first photographs of the babies to an unnamed US magazine for $11 million and would give the money to charity. The celebrity couple, known in the media as “Brangelina”, moved into a 17th century villa in Provence, France, earlier this year. Mintwizi, Routers.

题目:1.How was the paparazzi finally rewarded by waiting outside the hospital building for hours?

A) The sight of happy father Brad Pitt.

Unit1 our earth Audio Track 4-1-2/Audio Track 4-1-3 Blake: What are you working on, Mary? Mary: I’m finishing my paper. It’s due tomorrow, Blake. Blake: What’s the topic? Mary: It’s about Greenland. Blake: Greenland. Hmmm … that’s part of Canada, right? Mary: I think you need to study your world geography, Blake. Blake: Well, isn’t it near Canada? Mary: Yes, it’s off the coast of northeast Canada, but it’s part of Denmark. Blake: Oh, I didn’t know that. Well, what’s your paper about exactly? Mary: In my p aper, I answer the question “Is Greenland really green?” In other words, is Greenland covered by a lot of plants and trees? Blake: Is it? Mary: What do you think? Blake: Let’s see … Greenland is in the Arctic Circle —way up north. It’s cold, … so “Is Greenland really green?” I’d answer “probably not.” Mary: You’d be correct. It’s too cold there. In the north, a lot of the ground is frozen. The summers are short, so only the surface thaws. Blake: That sounds tough. Mary: It’s hard for the construction industry. It’s not easy to build in Greenland. Blake: It sounds so harsh. Why would anyone want to go there? Mary: There are big mountain ranges on the coasts. They’re great for hiking and outdoor sports. And there are lots of animals there. You can sometimes see whales swimming in the harbors. Blake: That sounds cool! OK, so if it’s not really a “green” place, why was it named “Greenland”? Mary: The first settlers wanted to attract other people. They gave it an attractive name. Audio Track 4-1-4/Audio Track 4-1-5 Jay: Come in here, Elise. You should see this show! Elise: What is it? Jay: It’s called “The Titanic of the Sky.” It’s about the Hindenburg, a great engineering feat. Elise: The Hindenburg … Jay: You know, that giant zeppelin that crashed in 1934. Thirty-five people died. Elise: Oh yeah, I remember now. It was flying from Germany to the United States. It crashed as it was landing. Jay: Right. It’s so funny looking, don’t you think? It doesn’t look anything like the airplanes we have today. Elise: Th at’s true. Why would people ride in a zeppelin anyway? It seems so dangerous. Jay: Well, some people called the Hindenburg “man’s greatest achievement in flight.” They thought it was safe, I guess. Elise: Who rode in it anyway? Jay: Mostly wealthy people. It accommodated between 30 and 40 passengers and crew. One person said it was like a “flying hotel.” Elise: It sounds pretty great.
