The first Banyan Tree Spa openedin Phuket in 1995.The Banyan Tree Spa provides guests with physical, mental and spiritual renewalby focusing on a non-clinical and holistic approach based on traditional Easternhealing therapies. It emphasizes on a ‘high-touch, low-tech’ approach that celebratesthe human touch and the use of natural herbs and spices.Launched in 2000, the Angsana Spa complements the fresh, modern approachto a holistic and environmentally conscious lifestyle found in our Angsanaproperties. Angsana Spa uses only natural ingredients such as native flowers andfruits and a fusion of techniques from the East and West to refresh and rejuvenatethe body, mind and spirit.Banyan Tree Gallery and Angsana Gallery are the brainchild of Ms. ClaireChiang, one of the founders of Banyan Tree. The two Galleries play an importantrole in showcasing cottage crafts of local artisans while sustaining their livelihoodsand craft skills through gainful employment. The Galleries support localcommunities by exhibiting and retailing their handicrafts, which are also found inthe resorts.8At Banyan Tree Hotels & ResortsEmbracing the Environment, Empowering the PeopleWe believe that our success is linked to the strength and well-being of thecommunities in which we are located. Since 1994, when the first Banyan Treeproperty was established on a wasteland created by tin mining in Phuket,we have made social responsibility a fundamental corporate principle.Backed by our philosophy of “Embracing the Environment, Empowering thePeople”, we seek to be an agent of social and economic development throughresponsible tourism. Banyan Tree’s triple bottom line (economy, society andenvironment) inspires associates, guests, and partners to take a more holisticapproach to their business decisions. In 2001, Banyan Tree set up the Green Imperative Fund (GIF) to formalizeits corporate social responsibility efforts. The GIF aims to widen the reach andheighten the effectiveness of the company’s efforts to provide financial support toworthy environmental initiatives and community-based projects. At Banyan Treeproperties, every guest is invited to be our partner through a small contribution ofUS$ 2 per room per night, under an “opt-out” arrangement. At Angsana properties, the amount is US$ 1 per room per night. We then match our guests’ contributions, dollar for dollar, to develop the GIF. Our contributions will at times exceed thecombined guests’ contributions as our resorts maintain a minimum contributionof 1% of their profits to the GIF.9At Banyan Tree Hotels & ResortsWe strongly believe that our actions and inactions of today significantly affectour future generations. We all share a responsibility to not only safeguard but toalso enhance our social and natural environments. As an operator of over 20 resorts and hotels, over 60 spas and over 60 retailgalleries in more than 20 countries with over 7000 associates of 52 differentnationalities, we shall continue to harness our creative diversity and corporateresources to help promote responsible practices and values. We believe good businesses do good, and that everyone in Banyan Tree has arole to play in this.10At Banyan Tree Hotels & ResortsWork-Life Balance in the WorkplaceBanyan Tree recognizes the link between overall profitability and overallassociate satisfaction, that work-life balancing is vital to achieve optimal balance.Demonstrating the importance of Work-Life Balance in the workplace, a BanyanTree Work-Life Committee, headed by Ms. Claire Chiang, one of our co-foundersof Banyan Tree, was formalized in May 2007.One of our on-going management efforts is to nurture an environment thatenables associates take responsibility in making their own choices in harmonizingwork and life needs.Work-Life programs & benefits have always been integrated as part of ourassociate’s employment terms. After that, my career continued to grow as I was given more challenging and exciting opportunities every two years. As part of my career development, I was sent to Cornell University School of in New York, USA to take the Professional Development Program. I was also assigned to be part of the pre-opening teams to Banyan Tree Ringha (Yunnan, China), Maison Souvannaphoum (Laos), Royale Hayat Hospital in Kuwait and opening of Double Pool Villa at Banyan Tree Phuket. In April 2007, I was promoted to become the Hotel Manager of Angsana Resort & Spa Bintan, Indonesia. Banyan Tree is a great company not only because it prioritizes its associates career growth and development, but also here, the associate’s opinions count. With the opening of new Banyan Tree properties in different part of the world in the coming years, a lot of opportunities will be made available for its associates.Johannes Rabl (Director of Food & Beverage, Banyan Tree Ungasan, Bali)After finishing hotel school in Germany, I started my career with Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts in August 2005 as Corporate Management Trainee for F&B. During the six-month training period, I was given many opportunities to grow - how to be a good leader and the importance of details were just two things that I learnt right from the beginning. My first opportunity to prove my capabilities came in February 2006 when I took over the position as Restaurant Manager and Sommelier of Pier 59, the modern fine dining restaurant of Banyan Tree Bangkok. During this time, I was also involved in various corporate activities and was sent to other properties in Thailand, China and Morocco. In June 2007 I was promoted to Director of Restaurants andwith the support of the company I started my new assignment as F&B Director of our upcoming hotel in Bali in August 2008. I am convinced that there is no other hotel chain that offers such fantastic career opportunities: young hoteliers are encouraged to be innovative and creative and to become a part of the successful growth of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts.Ruud Hulscher (Resident Manager, Banyan Tree Ungasan, Bali)I started my promising career at Banyan Tree Phuket as a Resort Host, soon thereafter I fulfilled several positions as Groups/Events coordinator, Project Manager (Bangkok), Sales Manager, Director of Rooms (Phuket) and Hotel Manager (Sri Lanka) and currently as EAM-Rooms Division (Bangkok). Already 10 years of many pleasurable experiences and accomplishments with the group has positioned me in a fantastic momentum for my desired career path. In August 2008, I headed to Bali to take on my new role as Resident Manager of Banyan Tree Ungasan Bali, another exciting property part of our very dynamic group.Banyan Tree’s multicultural focus, enables me to feel at “hom e”. The warm atmosphere, great sense of belonging and strong levels of empowerment is something to be proud of.With passion, loyalty and determination, the opportunities of developing ourselves are endless. The company provides truly unique experiences for their guests as well as their employees which I would highly recommend to anyone interested in an exciting hotel industry career.Jintana Roongruang (Assistant Vice President / Laguna Phuket and Sales (Spa))During my wonderful eight years with the company, I have always been given many opportunities to explore new things, work with different cultures and in new environments. Since the day I joined the group in 2000 (as a Spa Manager at Banyan Tree Bangkok), I have never stopped learning. As I advanced in my career with Banyan Tree Spa, I was tasked to set up new spa outlets in countries such as India, Malaysia and was part of the pre-opening team to Egypt and Dubai. In fact, shortly after I joined the company, I was sent to India to help set up the Oberoi Spa by Banyan Tree at Rajvilas. Before my promotion to my current position, I was the Area Spa Manager for Phuket and Indochina and oversaw all spa operations in these two regions. My superior is always there giving me advice and support and similarly, I try to be a good role model for my junior associates and motivate them to work hard as the company is always willing to groom associates who want to grow with the company.Metta Wong (Assistant Vice President / Gallery Corporate Sales Singapore)I first joined Banyan Tree Gallery as an Overseas Operations Manager in January 1998. From 2003 to 2004, as Operations Manager (Singapore), I helped oversee the gallery retail operations in Singapore. During this period, I learnt a lot about the retail operations, pricing the merchandise, managing and recruiting sales staff. Understanding my products helps to sharpen my aesthetic sense and creativity. I believe our niche market is what sets us aside from other shops. Banyan Tree Gallery sells signature items of our hotels/ resorts and spas. Since we took over the running of the Museum Shops in Singapore, we have products which showcase the heritage and culture of both Singapore and South East Asia.In 2005, I took over as the Corporate Sales Manager where exceeding customers’ expectations is a must. There is simply no end to creativity in my job as I need to customize gifts for the various government ministries and private sectors. I enjoy selling Gallery products to my customers as I love and appreciate our products and my customers know that I am committed to what I am selling. Ten years have passed since I first joined the company and I am still loving every minute of my work.Yvonne Suner (Manager, Events & Romance, Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Mexico)I first joined Banyan Tree as a trainee in 2005. Time really flies especially when you are working hard and enjoying every minute of your work.I had a chance to undergo a trainee program in Spain but it was Banyan Tree Phuket which offers what I was looking for – a challenging assignment as an Events Manager, new continent, new culture! In late 2008, I was transferred to Mexico to take on my new assignment in Banyan Tree Mayakoba.I really enjoy working at Banyan Tree – its friendly environment and commitment to associates, allowing us to embrace new challenges and reaching new goals. Banyan Tree is expanding so fast in so many countries around the world that I am sure it will be able to offer many opportunities for those who love to travel, to keep on learning and discover new challenges.21At Banyan Tree Hotels & ResortsContact us today atBanyan Tree Hotels & Resorts Pte.
