I couldn't believe people from thousands of years ago could create something so awesome.The next day, we went to see the ancient City Wall that surrounded the old city center of Xi'an. It was awesome walking along the giant stone wall and looking out over the city from above. We even rented little carts to ride around the entire length of the wall, which took over 2 hours! Afterwards, we visited the Muslim Quarter market and I tried delicious lamb skewers and fresh persimmons.On the third day, we drove out to the foot of Mount Huashan, one of China's five sacred mountains. My parents hadsigned us up to hike part of the trail to the top! The hike was challenging with all the steep steps, but I felt so accomplished making it up past the terrifying plank walks bolted to the sides of cliffs. The views from the peaks were absolutely breathtaking. I felt like I was on top of the world!For the last couple days of our trip, we just relaxed and explored more of Xi'an's mosques, pagodas, and parks. I loved the Daxingshan Temple with its ginormous Buddha statue towering above us. We also watched an amazing outdoor dance and light show one evening along the ancient City Wall.On our last night in Xi'an, we had a family memorial service to honor our ancestors at the city's Lama Buddhist Monastery. Burning incense and praying together felt very special. Overall, my May Day trip was one of the most awesome, educational and fun vacations I've ever had! I have so many amazing memories to treasure.
