Lesson 32 A lost ship The salvage operation had been a complete failure. The small ship, Elkor, which had been searching the Barents Sea for weeks, was on its way home.

On its way home 返航途中:on your/my/its way 就要去(或来);在去往…… The letter should be on its way to you.A radio message from the mainland had been received by the ship’s captain instructing him to give up the search. From the mainland 介词短语,解释radio messageInstructing 非谓语动词,现在分词,解释radio message的内容The captain knew that another attempt would be made later, for the sunken ship he was trying to find had been carrying a precious cargo of gold bullion.Make an attempt 企图For 因为引导的原因从句sunken 沉没的He was trying to find 定语从句,省略whichHad been carrying 这艘船从过去到现在一直带着Despite the message, the captain of the Elkor decide to try once more.Once more / once again 再一次: Let me hear it just once more. / Once again the train was lateThe sea bed was scoured with powerful nets and there was tremendous excitement on board when a chest was raised from the bottom.Scour sth (for sb/sth)彻底搜索: We scoured the area for somewhere to pitch our tent. There were tremendous cheers in the auditorium. Though the crew were at first under the impression that the lost ship had been found, the contents of the chest proved them wrong.(be)u nder the impression that … = think : I was under the impression that the work had already been completed.Prove v.证明prove sb/sth/yourself +adj. / n.: she was determined to prove everyone wrong. What they had in fact found was a ship which had been sunk many years before. What they had found 名词从句Which 引导定语从句Before adv. 以前:it had been fine the week before.Sink-sank-sunk;沉没The chest contained the personal belongings of a seaman, Alan Fielding. There were books, clothing and photographs, together with letters which the seaman had once received from his wife.Together with: 连同:I sent my order, together with a cheque for $40.The captain of the Elkor order his men to salvage as much as possible from the wreck. Nothing of value was found, but the numerous items which were brought to the surface proved to be of great interest.Men 手下Of value = valuable , 介词短语修饰名词Prove 系动词,prove + adj. / n. / to be = be + …Of great interest = interestingFrom a heavy gun that was raised, the captain realized that the ship must have been a cruiser.Must 此处表示猜测,因为是对过去的猜测所以用must have beenIt must have rained last night, because everywhere is wet.In another chest, which contained the belongings of a ship’s officer, there was an unfinished letter which had been written on March 14th ,1943.The captain learnt from the letter that the name of the lost ship was Karen. That 从句是learnt的宾语从句,因为learn sth from sth, 从句太长往后移动The most valuable find of all was the ship’s log book, parts of which it was possible to read.Find n. 发现的事物Log book航海日记Parts of which中which 代指book,做read 的宾语。
