The kingdom was conquered by the Mongols in the 13thcentury, and the Yuan Dynasty rule was established there. The Mongols designated Yuan a province while establishing Dali and Heqing as prefectures. In order to strengthen their control over Dali, the Yuan rulers offered former chieftains official posts and granted their families hereditary privileges. Though land was mainly concentrated in the hands of the local aristocracy at that time, the feudal lord system began to give way to landlord system.
The kingdom lasted for over 300 years as a tributary to the Song Dynasty court. It sent warhorses, handicrafts and precious medicines to the court, and in return received science and technology, as well as books in the Han language. Economic and cultural exchanges with the Hans contributed greatly to the development of this border area.

Module 5 Ethnic Culture【
Three Days to See(excerpt)All of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live.Sometimes it was as long as a year; sometimes as short as twentyfour hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed man chose to spend his last days or his last hours.I speak,of course,of free men who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings? What happiness should we find in reviewing the past, what regrets?Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow.Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life.We should live each day with a gentleness,a vigor, and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those,of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat,drink, and be merry,”but most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death. In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values is changed. He becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted that those who live,or have lived,in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.Most of us,however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die,but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it.假如给我三天光明(节选)我们大家都读过一些令人激动的故事,这些故事里的主人公仅仅活在有限并且特定的时间内,有时长达一年,有时短到24小时。

Module 5 Ethnic CultureⅠ.阅读理解Islands in the world are famous for different things. But Hawaii is special for its variety of features. Beautiful sandy beaches, active volcanoes, a great canyon (峡谷) and special history and culture add up to create its famously romantic atmosphere.Formed by volcanoes at the bottom of the sea, the Hawaii Islands are likea necklace in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 3,700 kilometres off the west coast of America。
There are eight main islands in the group, including Hawaii Island (or Big Island ), Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau.Hawaii Island, the youngest and biggest island, was formed 430,000 years ago and is still growing。
Kauai, the oldest, was formed 5.1 million years ago。
For tourists, the sight of the lava that still flows from some of the volcanoes down to the sea, is a major attraction。
2019_2020学年高中英语Module5EthnicCultureSectionⅠIntroduction
Section Ⅰ Introduction & Reading and Vocabulary—ComprehendingⅠ阅读理解A(2019·广西桂林十八中高二期中)In England recently three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop and waited. About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They were just going to get on when suddenly there was a loud noise behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted at them. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreigners seem all at sea and looked embarrassed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus that the first person who arrives at the bus stop is the first person to get on the bus.Learning the language of a country isn’t enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn’t agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave you thirsty. In that country, you shake your head to mean “yes”— a nod means “no”. At a meal in countries on the Arabic Peninsula, you will find that your glass is repeated refilled as soon as you drink up. If you think that you have had enough, you should take the cup or glasses in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side or place your hand over the top.In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when you are sitting talking to someone even at an important meeting. Doing this in Thailand, however, could bring about trouble. Also, you should try to avoid touching the head of an adult—it’s just not done in Thailand.【解题导语】文章介绍了出国旅游时的一些习俗,不同国家有不同的习俗,我们要入乡随俗。
