高中英语 Unit 2《Robots》文字素材5 新人教版选修7资源链接You wouldn't expect to find men dressed in tuxedoes in a canoe in the middle of the night in the fog. But that's exactly where author / illustrator / creator of the book and television show Rolie Polie Olie William Joyce and director Chris Wedge were seven years ago when they decided to make a movie about Robots. I got the chance to visit William Joyce at his very creative and unique office in Shreveport, Louisiana. We discussed the opening of his latest movie, Robots, which opens on March 11 and his fascinating life.Kid Reporter Ben met wrilliam Joyce, creator of Robots.TFK: Can you tell me a little bit about your new movie, Robots?Joyce: Robots is an animated motion picture about a world entirely made of mechanical people and things.TFK: How have you been involved in the making of the movie?Joyce: The director, Chris Wedge, and I decided we wanted to do a robot movie seven years ago. We liked robots and thought they were fun and cool and that a movie just about them could be really exciting.TFK: What character in Robots is most like you?Joyce: I think that I'm a little bit like Mr Bigweld the guy who made up the whole city because I had to make up and invent so much of what was in the movie and in this world. And then, I'm a lot like the little character called the Wonderbot, who is always trying to get in the middle of things and help things out and make things work, and he keeps getting beat up, and smacked around, and bashed in, and smushed, and he keeps coming back.I'm a little like Rodney Copperbottom, the hero of the movie, because Rodney comes from a small town and goes to a big city because it's his dream to be a great inventor. And I came from a small town, and I went to the big city, Los Angeles and New York, so that I could write books and make up stories, and do movies.Rodney Copperbottom and Fender take aharrowing ride on Robot City Crosstown Express TFK: What inspired you to first write about robots?Joyce: Well, I was a kid, and I watched TV shows and movies and cartoons that had robots in them, and I always liked those characters a lot and just thought they were cool. Way before you were born, way before even Star Wars came out, there were some really cool movies. There was one called The Day the Earth Stood Still, and it had this really scary robot in it named Gort. If you did something he didn't like, he'd just disintegrate you instantly. So he scared me, but he was really cool. When Star Wars came out, they had those cool robots, R2D2 and C3PO.TFK: What do you think kids will like best about the movie?Joyce: They'll like this thing called the Cross- Town Express. In Robot City, if you want to get from one place to another, they put you in this giant catapult and they Ring you around. It doesn't have wheels. It's just a round cage that you ride around in and you get shot from one place to another like a giant sling-sbot! We probably have the greatest fart scene in the history of movies. I think kids will like that a lot, because there is one fart that is so loud and long that the whole screen shakes. The usties? react to some wild happenings in Robot CityTFK: When did you first start to write and draw?Joyce: My parents said I was born with a pencil in my hand. I don't think that's true. I started drawing as soon as I could. I wrote my first story in the 4th grade. It was called Billy's Booger. It was about a boy who was hit in the head by a meteorite and his boogers got super powers.TFK: When you were a kid, did you want to be an author or illustrator?Joyce: Absolutely. I wanted to be several things. I wanted to be an archaeologist, I wanted to be a secret agent, and I wanted to write stories.TFK: Has being a famous author and illustrator changed your life?Joyce: I like what I do so much that I'm very, very happy. I don't think I wouldhave been happy doing anything else.TFK: Where do you get your story ideas?Joyce: Sometimes I'll be looking at a magazine and I'I1 see a picture of a fossil or of a dinosaur, then I'll think it would be cool to do a book about a dinosaur. When I made up Rolie Polie Olie, I was just shaving one morning. I got this rhyme in my head out of nowhere that went Rolie Polie Olie rolled out of bed, brushed his teeth, recharged his head. I don't know where it came from but all of a sudden I had in my head this little round robot guy that had to plug his head in every morning to get charged up.They come from stuff I see, stuff I love, stories I've loved, interesting things that have happened to me, interesting things that I wish would happen to me, places I'd like to go, people I'd like to meet, things I wish would happen but don't. TFK: How do your children inspire your writing?William: For a lot of the episodes of Rolie Polie Olie, I would just watch the kids and get ideas for stories. Like, there was one episode where Olie loses his nose, and it ends up in his little sister's diaper. The robot's mechanical, you know, so it can come off. But that came from when my daughter was 3--or maybe she was 5—and my little boy had a really dirty diaper and it smelled awful. I wish I didn't have a nose so I wouldn't have to smell that. Then I got the idea that Rolie Polie Olie loses his nose.TFK: Who are some of your favorite authors and illustrators for kids?Joyce: I love Maurice Sendak. He did Where the Wild Things Are. He was a big influence on me. Beatrix Potter did the Peter Rabbit books. I liked her stuff a lot. William Stieg who did Shrek—I really like his books. I love Bugs Bunny cartoons.I love old monster movies. I love old science fiction movies. I love the Three Stooges.I love Pinnochio. I love Winnie the Pooh. I love Peter Pan.There's a guy named Robert Lawson who did Rabbit Hill. I really loved that. This guy called Rudyard Kipling; he did the Jungle Books. Those are really good. I also got a lot of inspiration from comic books. I love Peanuts. I love Calvin & Hobbes.I love Little Orphan Annie. Buzz Sawyer, Flash Cordon, Buck Rogers, King Kong, Wizard of Oz—all those things.。
