至于自己的平辈亲戚，也有同姓的堂兄弟姊妹和不同姓的表兄弟姊妹之别。
英文則不分男女长幼都是cousin！我们广府话俗语有这么的一句：「姑表嫡嫡亲，姨表当闲人！」那是说如果你是一个男人，姑姑的女儿娶不得，阿姨的女儿娶得！而姑表又比舅表亲一层。

反过来说，贾宝玉就不能去继承林家，因为他没有林家的血统。
