PPP stands for except______.(A)Presentation(B)Procedures(C)Production(D)Practice20 It is generally agreed that the first true cities appeared about 5,000 years ago in the food-producing communities of the Middle East. The cities of Sumeria, Egypt and the Indus Valley possessed a number of characteristics that distinguished them as truly urban. The cities were very much larger and more densely populated than any previous settlement, and their function was clearly differentiated from that of the surrounding villages. In the cities the old patterns of kinship relations were replaced by a complex hierarchy of social classes based on the specialization of labor. Moreover, the need to keep records led to the development of writing and arithmetic, and the increased sophistication of urban society gave a new impetus to artistic expression of every kind. When the basis of city life was established in Europe the urban tradition was drawn from the ancient cities of the Middle East, via the civilization of Greece and Rome. We can trace three main phases in the growth of the West European city. The first of these is the medieval phase which extends from the beginning of the 11th century A.D. to about1,500 to the beginning of the 19th century. The third is the modern phase extending from the early 19th century to the present day.Every medieval city began as a small settlement, which grew up round a geographical or cultural focal point. This would be a permanent structure such as a stronghold, a cathedral or a large church. In districts where travel and trade were well established, it might be a market, a river crossing, or a place where two or more trade routes met, in studies of urban geography the oldest part of town is referred to as the nuclear settlement. There are many small towns in Europe where it is still possible to trace the outline of the original nuclear settlement. It is, of course, much more difficult to do this in the case if a large modern city which has grown to many times its original size.21 The ancient cities were characterized by all the following except______.(A)larger populations(B)different roles(C)different social classes(D)different locations22 Which of the following statements is TRUE?(A)West European cities established their own urban traditions.(B)West European cities grew directly out of those in the Middle East.(C)Cities appeared earlier in the Middle East cities went through the same phases. (D)West European and Middle East cities went through the same phases.23 Which of the following could be regarded as a geographical focal point?(A)A local restaurant.(B)A town hall.(C)A local theatre.(D)An open market.24 It is easier to locate its original nuclear settlement of a small town______.(A)because it began as a small settlement(B)because it is less developed(C)because of its small size(D)because of its location25 Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?(A)The Origin and Development of Cities.(B)The Differences Between a Modern City and an Ancient City.(C)The Functions of a City.(D)The Characteristics of an Ancient City.25 There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is brought up. If an individual is handicapped environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable. The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster homes. Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark's I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.26 This selection can best be titled ______.(A)Measuring Your Intelligence(B)Intelligence and Environment(C)The Case of Peter and Mark(D)How the Brain Influences Intelligence27 The best statement of the main idea of this passage is that______.(A)human brains differ considerably(B)the brain a person is born with is important in determining his intelligence(C)environment is crucial in determining a person's intelligence(D)persons having identical brains will have roughly the same intelligence28 According to the passage, the average I.Q. is______.(A)85(B)100(C)110(D)12529 The case history of the twins appears to support the conclusion that______. (A)individuals with identical brains seldom test at the same level(B)an individual's intelligence is determined only by his environment (C)lack of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligence(D)changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain 30 This passage suggests that an individual's I.Q. ______.(A)can be predicted at birth(B)stays the same throughout his life(C)can be increased by education(D)is determined by his childhood二、简答题31 教师课堂中纠错的意义及策略有哪些?三、教学情境分析题32 以下是两位老师为学生布置的作业:Teacher 1Step 4: Homework1. This could end the worries of many parents fearful for their children's safety on the roads.Until now the Country Council has only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, provided the arrangement will not lose money and that children taking part will be attending their nearest school. The new scheme is to be tried out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington school. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the Council has said in the past it will not undertake to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to organize a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school's headmaster.Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part in. Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a council official has said the cost of parents should be less than $6.50 a term. They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now just make an extra journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided for their children, to see if they would like to take part in the new scheme.21 The children the Council ran buses for in the past were those______.(A)whose parents were worried about them(B)who would have had to walk otherwise(C)who could not walk(D)who had to travel a long way22 Taking part in the Council's trial schemes are children who______.(A)living in Milton and go to Impington school(B)living in Impington and go to Milton school(C)living in Milton and go to Milton school(D)living in Impington and go to Impington school23 The new bus service will run______.(A)on morning journeys to school only(B)in connection with an existing service(C)only for children living more than three miles away(D)only in wet weather24 Agreement to pay for the new bus service has been obtained from______.(A)the school's headmaster(B)the education department(C)the bus company(D)the parents25 The parents the Council is now going to contact are those______.(A)who had not yet answered letters(B)who didn't want to pay(C)whose children stayed away from school(D)who had asked about transport before25 In the college-admissions wars, we parents are the true fighters. We're pushing our kids to get good grades, take SAT preparatory courses and build resumes so they can get into the college of our first choice. I've twice been to the wars, and as I survey the battlefield, something different is happening. We see our kids' college background as a prize demonstrating how well we' ve raised them. But we can' t acknowledge that our obsession is more about us than them. So we' ve contrived various justifications that turn out to be half-truths, prejudices or myths. It actually doesn't matter much whether Aaron and Nicole go to Stanford. We have a full-blown prestige panic; we worry that there won't be enough prizes to go around. Fearful parents urge their children to apply to more schools than ever. Underlying the hysteria is the belief that scarce elite degrees must be highly valuable. Their graduates must enjoy more success because they get a better education and developbetter contacts. All that is plausible—and mostly wrong. We haven't found any convincing evidence that selectivity or prestige matters. Selective schools don't systematically employ better instructional approaches than less selective schools. On two measures—professor's feedback and the number of essay exams-selective schools do slightly worse.By some studies, selective schools do enhance their graduates' lifetime earnings. The gain is reckoned at 2-4% for every 100-point increase in a school's average SAT scores. But even this advantage is probably a statistical fluke. A well-known study examined students who got into highly selective schools and then went elsewhere. They earned just as such as graduates from higher-status schools.Kids count more than their colleges. Getting into Yale may signify intelligence, talent and ambition. But it's not the only indicator and, paradoxically, its significance is declining. The reason: so many similar people go elsewhere. Getting into college isn'tlife's only competition. In the next competition—the job market and graduate school—the results may change. Old-boy networks are breaking down. Princeton economist Alan Krueger studied admissions to one top Ph.D. program. High scores on the GRE helped explain who got in; degrees of prestigious universities didn't.So, parents, lighten up. The stakes have been vastly exaggerated. Up to a point, we can rationalize our pushiness. America is a competitive society; our kids need to adjust to that. But too much pushiness can be destructive. The very ambition we impose on our children may get some into Harvard but may also set them up for disappointment. One study found that, other things being equal, graduates of highly selective schools experienced more job dissatisfaction. They may have been so conditioned to being on top that anything less disappoints.26 Why does the author say that parents are the true fighters in the college-admissions wars?(A)They have the final say in which university their children are to attend.(B)They know best which universities are most suitable for their children.(C)They have to carry out intensive surveys of colleges before children make an application.(D)They care more about which college their children go to than the children themselves.27 Why do parents urge their children to apply to more schools than ever?(A)They want to increase their children's chances of entering a prestigious college.(B)They hope their children can enter a university that offers attractive scholarships. (C)Their children will have a wider choice of which college to go to.(D)Elite universities now enroll fewer students than they used to.28 What does the author mean by "Kids count more than their colleges"(Line 1, Para. 4)? (A)Continuing education is more important to a person' s success.(B)A person's happiness should be valued more than their education.(C)Kids' actual abilities are more important than their college background.(D)What kids learn at college cannot keep up with job market requirements.29 What does Krueger's study tell us?(A)Getting into Ph.D.programs may be more competitive than getting into college. (B)Degrees of prestigious universities do not guarantee entry to graduate programs. (C)Graduates from prestigious universities do not care much about their GRE scores.(D)Connections built in prestigious universities may be sustained long after graduation.30 One possible result of pushing children into elite universities is that .(A)they earn less than their peers from other institutions(B)they turn out to be less competitive in the job market(C)they experience more job dissatisfaction after graduation(D)they overemphasize their qualifications in job applications二、简答题31 简述写作教学中“范文”的作用,并说明范文在教学中的使用步骤及每个步骤的教学目标。

Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air.One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hurts and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly.21 Pruning should be done to______.(A)make the tree grow taller(B)improve the shape of the tree(C)get rid of the small branches(D)make the small branches thicker22 Trees become unhealthy if the gardener______.(A)allows too many branches to grow in the middle(B)does not protect them from wind(C)forces them to grow too quickly(D)damages some of the small side branches23 Why is a special substance painted on the tree?(A)To make a wound smooth.(B)To prevent disease entering a wound.(C)To cover a rough surface.(D)To help a wound to dry.24 A good gardener prunes a tree______.(A)at intervals throughout the year(B)as quickly as possible(C)occasionally when necessary(D)regular every winter25 What was the author's purpose when writing this passage?(A)To give practical instruction for pruning a tree.(B)To give a general description of pruning.(C)To explain how trees develop diseases.(D)To discuss different methods of pruning.25 Drunken driving, sometimes called America's socially accepted form of murder, has become a national epidemic. Every hour of every day about three Americans on average are killed by drunken drivers, adding up an incredible 350,000 over the past decade.A drunken driver is usually defined as one with a 0.10 blood alcohol content or roughly three beers, glasses of wine or shots of whisky drunk within two hours. Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the American alcohol image and judges were lenient in most courts, but the drunken slaughter has recently caused so many well-publicized tragedies, especially involving young children, that public opinion is no longer so tolerant.Twenty states have raised the legal drinking age to 21, reversing a trend in the 1960s to reduce it to 18. After New Jersey lowered it to 18, the number of people killed by 18 to 20-year-old drivers more than doubled, so the state recently upped it back to 21.Reformers, however, fear raising the drinking age will have little effect unless accompanied by educational programs to help young people to develop "responsible attitudes" about drinking and teach them to resist peer pressure to drink.Tough new laws have led to increased arrests and in many areas already, to a marked decline in fatalities. Some states are also penalizing bars for serving customers too many drinks. As the fatalities continue to occur daily in every state, some Americans are even beginning to speak well of the 13 years' national prohibition of alcohol that began in 1919, which President Hoover called the "noble experiment". They forget that legal prohibition didn't stop drinking, but encouraged political corruption and organized crime. As with the booming drug trade generally, there is no easy solution.26 Which of the following sentences best concludes the main idea of this passage? (A)Drunken driving has caused numerous fatalities in the United States.(B)It' s recommendable to prohibit alcohol drinking around the United States.(C)The American society is trying hard to prevent drunken driving.(D)Drunken driving has become a national epidemic in the United State.27 Which of the following four drivers can be defined as an illegal driver?(A)A sixteen-year-old boy who drank a glass of wine three hours ago.(B)An old lady who took four shots of whisky in yesterday's party.(C)A policeman who likes alcohol very much.(D)A pregnant woman who drank a beer an hour ago.28 In reformers' opinion, ______ is the most effective way to stop youngsters from drinking alcohol.(A)raising the legal drinking age from 18 to 21(B)forcing teenagers to obey disciplines(C)developing young people's sense of responsibility(D)pressing teenagers to take soft drinks29 The rule that only people above 21 years of age can drink______.(A)is a new law promoted by the twenty states(B)had been once adopted before the 1960s(C)has been enforced since the prohibition of alcohol(D)will be carried out all over the country30 What is the author's attitude toward all the laws against drunken driving? (A)Optimistic.(B)Pessimistic.(C)Indifferent.(D)Ironic.二、简答题31 “任务型教学法”是新课标中倡导的一种教学方法,它能够有效地激发学生者的学习动机,使他们主动参与学习。

During the teaching activities, students should accept and do with teachers' instructions.(A)grammar-translation method(B)audio-lingual method or situational method(C)cognitive method(D)communicative approach20 Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbors, even pets, will all do the trick, but the biggest longevity boost seems to come from marriage or an equivalent relationship. The effect was first noted in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man's life and two to a woman's. The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm.Even if the odds are stacked against you, marriage can more than compensate. Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Likewise, a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn't smoke. There's a <u>flip side</u>, however, as partners aremore likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouse's death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the odds favor marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10 thousand people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects. So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socio-economic factors, health-service provision, emotional support and other more physiological mechanisms. For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100. The ultimate social network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says: " People are interconnected, so their health is interconnected."21 William Fair's study and other studies show that______.(A)social life provides an effective cure for illness(B)being sociable helps improve one's quality of life(C)women benefit more than men from marriage(D)marriage contributes a great deal to longevity22 Linda Waite's studies support the idea that______.(A)older men should quit smoking to stay healthy(B)marriage can help make up for ill health(C)the married are happier than the unmarried(D)unmarried people are likely to suffer in later life23 It can be inferred from the context that the "flip side"(Line 5, Para. 2)refers to______.(A)the disadvantages of being married(B)the emotional problems arising from marriage(C)the responsibility of taking care of one's family(D)the consequence of a broken marriage24 What does the author say about social networks?(A)They have effects similar to those of a marriage.(B)They help develop people's community spirit.(C)They provide timely support for those in need.(D)They help relieve people of their life's burdens.25 What can be inferred from the last paragraph?(A)It's important that we develop a social network when young.(B)To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.(C)Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.(D)We should share our social networks with each other.25 Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people. My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the wordsthat would change my life, " Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it."At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school——walking on my own! When the Great Depression hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time. Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother's words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world——Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1 billion a year. You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.26 What Kemmons's mom often told him during his childhood was______.(A)caring(B)moving(C)encouraging(D)interesting27 According to the author, who played the most important role in making him walk back to school again?(A)Doctors.(B)Nurses.(C)Friends.(D)Mom.28 What caused Kemmons to start a motel by himself?(A)His terrible experience in the hotel.(B)His previous business success of various levels.(C)His mom's support.(D)His wife's suggestion.29 Which of the following best describes Kemmons's mother?(A)Modest, helpful, and hard-working.(B)Loving, supportive and strong-willed.(C)Careful, helpful and beautiful.(D)Strict, sensitive and supportive.30 Which of the following led to Kemmons's success according to the passage? (A)Self-confidence, hard work, higher education and a poor family.(B)Mom's encouragement, clear goals, self-confidence and hard work.(C)Clear goals, mom's encouragement, a poor family and higher education.(D)Mom's encouragement, a poor family, higher education and opportunities.

Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic. Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and above all, the insects.I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics andenjoy burning the midnight oil, reading about other people's observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist; one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.21 According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be ______ .(A)full of ambition(B)self-disciplined(C)full of enthusiasm(D)knowledgeable22 The first paragraph tells us that the author______.(A)lost his hearing when he was a child(B)didn't like his brothers and sisters(C)was born to a naturalist's family(D)was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood23 The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he______.(A)just rends about other people' s observations and discoveries(B)comes up with solution in most natural ways(C)has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic(D)lacks some of the qualities required of scientist24 The author can't remember his relatives clearly because______.(A)he didn't live very long with them(B)he was fully occupied with observing nature(C)the family was extremely larger(D)he was too young when he lived with them25 Which of the following statements is true?(A)The author believes that a born naturalist can not be a scientist.(B)The author read a lot of books about the natural world and oil industry.(C)The author's brothers and sisters were good at music and languages.(D)The author spend a lot of time working on riddles.25 Move over Methuselah. Future generations could be living well into their second century and still doing Sudoku, if life expectancy predictions are true. Increasing by two years every decade, they show no signs of flattening out. Average lifespan worldwide is already double what it was 200 years ago. Since the 1980s, experts thought the increase in life expectancy would slow down and then stop, but forecasters have repeatedly been proved wrong. The reason behind the steady rise in life expectancy is "the decline in the death rate of the elderly", says Professor Tom Kirkwood from Newcastle University. He maintains thatour bodies are evolving to maintain and repair themselves better and our genes are investing in <u>this process</u> to put off the damage which will eventually lead to death. As a result, there is no ceiling imposed by the realities of the ageing process. "There is no use-by-date when we age. Ageing is not a fixed biological process," Tom says.A large study of people aged 85 and over carried out by Professor Kirkwood discovered that there were a remarkable number of people enjoying good health and independence in their late 80s and beyond. With people reaching old age in better shape, it is safe to assume that this is all due to better eating habits, living conditions, education and medicine. There are still many people who suffer from major health problems, but modern medicine means doctors are better at managing long-term health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. "We are reaching old age with less accumulative damage than previous generations. We are less damaged," says Professor Kirkwood. Our softer lives and the improvements in nutrition and healthcare have had a direct impact on longevity.Nearly one-in-five people currently in the UK will live to see their 100th birthday, the Office for National Statistics predicted last year. Life expectancy at birth has continued to increase in the UK—from 73.4 years for the period 1991 to 1993 to 77.85 years for 2007 to 2009. A report in Science from 2002 which looked at life expectancy patterns in different countries since 1840 concluded that there was no sign of a natural limit to life. Researchers Jim Oeppen and Dr. James Vaupel found that people in the country with the highest life expectancy would live to an average age of 100 in about six decades. But they stopped short of predicting anything more."This is far from eternity: modest annual increments in life expectancy will never lead to immortality," the researchers said.We do not seem to be approaching anything like the limits of life expectancy, says Professor David Leon from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. "There has been no flattening out of the best of the best—the groups which everyone knows have good life expectancy and <u>low mortality</u>, "he says. These groups, which tend to be in the higher social and economic groups in society, can live for several years longer than people in lower social groups, prompting calls for an end to inequalities within societies.Within populations, genes also have an important role to play in determining how long we could survive for—but environment is still the most important factor. It is no surprise that healthy-living societies like Japan have the highest life expectancies in the world. But it would still be incredible to think that life expectancy could go on rising forever. "I would bet there will be further increases in life expectancy and then it will probably begin to slow," says Tom, "but we just don't know."26 The purpose of the prediction saying that future generations could be doing Sudoku when they are over 100 is to ______.(A)report that doing Sudoku is a healthy living style(B)prove that doing Sudoku helps people move to Methuselah(C)predict that future generations will like Sudoku since it is very popular now(D)indicate that future generations could remain smart and energetic even if they are over 10027 The underlined phrase "this process" in Paragraph 2 refers to______process.
