The Croods –An Intriguing and Entertaining Story
The Croods is an animated adventure comedy film released in 2013. It is produced by DreamWorks Animation. As far as I am concerned, the theme it explores, the character design, and the drama conflicts involved can all find clues in some other animated movies. And Audience may be disappointed if they are seeking some controversial, profound or enlightening ideas from the film. However, I still have to admit that this film tells a very intriguing and entertaining story.
This film is set in a fictional prehistoric era. Obeying the rule, “Never to be not afraid”, and keeping themselves away from new things to avoid potential danger, The Croods is the only family to survive in their community. However, an earthquake destroys their cave, and they have to seek for a new life. During this trip, Grug, Eep and Guy, representatives of three different kind of people –who refuse to change to ensure safety, who is curious about new things, and who is full of new ideas –contradicted and influenced each other…
The Croods performs best in telling stories. A good story is essential for a film to attract audience and it is not easy to achieve. Themes, shaping of characters, plot and some other factors can all influence the quality of a story. And this film has done a relatively good job in these aspects.
This film deals with more than one themes, such as the importance of changes and innovation, and the value of family unity. These themes lack controversy and originality. However, this feature can also be considered to be an advantage of this film. First of all, these themes can be easily understood and accepted by audience.
Thus, the process of watching won’t be stressed and tiring. Also, it enables children, the prime audience of animated films, to grasp the meaning of the film. Secondly, themes this film explores is so universal that audience can easily identify themselves with the Croods family.
The shaping of characters in this film is not perfect, but praiseworthy. Take Grug as an example. Changes of this character can be perceived throughout the film. At the beginning of the story, Grug believes that all new things are dangerous. However, when he finds that old rules cannot help his family anymore, he gradually changes his attitude towards new things. Such changes make his image life-like and well-rounded. And images of other characters, animals and monsters, though are not so well-developed, are also unique and lovely. We can easily differentiate them from each other, and can hardly forget the curious Eep, the loggy Thunk, the mischievous belt monkey…
The plot of this film severs for the expression of themes and the shaping of characters well. And the plot itself is entertaining and relaxing enough.
On the one hand, since the whole story set in a fictional prehistoric era, there is no limitation for imagination. Thus, the Croods experience many stunning adventures, come across with many amazing creatures.
On the other hand, some moment of the film is so close to our own lives that audience can share the emotions of characters. Let’s take the relationship between Grug, Eep and Guy as an example: the father wants to protect the daughter, and considers the lover of the daughter to be a dangerous and evil existence while the
daughter often stands by her lover, and the conflicts ended up with the compromise of the father. Such story also exist in real life.
These two aspects of the plot, one provides audience a novel experience, the other help audience to identify themselves with the characters, work together, making this film entertaining and relaxing at the same time.
In conclusion, The Croods, is a typical animated film made by Hollywood animation studio, which is characterized by interesting and lovely characters, a relative simple plot with a happy ending, and themes advocating love and kindness. However, this film stands out with its high production quality, and more importantly, well-developed entertaining and relaxing stories. If you are looking for a funny and relaxing film, or a film suitable for the whole family, then this film is definite a good choice.。
