Technology inStockholm,Sweden.Specifically we discuss some chal-lenges that we have been meeting in serving a very di-verse student body with state-of-the-art knowledge in arapidly developingfield.Our enablers for success includea rapid academic control of the curriculum,close coop-eration with industrial actors and an element of project-oriented learning in the curriculum.Index Terms—wireless systems,master programs1.INTRODUCTIONThe Royal Institute of Technology(KTH)is the premiertechnical university in Sweden,with some12000fulltime students on undergraduate and graduate level,1400Ph.D.students,and3100faculty and staff.Research andeducation is pursued within nine schools of KTH.Withinthe School of Electrical Engineering,five master pro-gram are run:Electrical power engineering;Network ser-vices and systems;Nuclear fusion science and engineeringphysics;Systems,control and robotics;and Wireless sys-tems.The master program in wireless systems focuses onenabling technologies for mobile and wireless networks.It was founded in2000and until2005it had a durationof one and half years of full-time studies.Starting withthe2006admission,the program is two years long.Theprogram is taught entirely in English,it is currently notsubject to tuition fees,and it recruits students worldwide.The general admission requirements for all master pro-grams are a completed Bachelor’s degree in engineering,and knowledge of written and spoken English.For thewireless systems program,it is further required that thestudents have a strong and relevant background in electri-cal,electronics or computer engineering.The wireless systems program is the most popular in-ternational master program at KTH,measured in terms1Number of applications/admitted students entering the programper academic year:57/15(2001),213/27(2002),434/26(2003),699/23(2004),561/25(2005),549/39(2006),and490/NA(2007).30ECTS credits(about5months of full-time work).It can be carried out in industry or at the university,but in either case the same requirements apply.Generally it is the stu-dent’s own responsibility tofind a project,but the univer-sity offers its support by bulletin listings of advertisements for thesis projects available at companies and within the university.The requirements on the thesis project are the same as those of thefive-year Swedish engineering degree (“civilingenj¨o r”)program.Some students elect to do their thesis project abroad,and they are subject to the same re-quirements as the students who do the project within Swe-den.In principle the thesis project can be performed any time during the second year of study.However,in order to commence thesis work,students must have taken courses relevant for the topic of the thesis.The thesis requires a written report,approved by the examiner at KTH(always a KTH faculty member),a pub-lic oral presentation at KTH with opposition,and addition-ally that the student acts as opponent on another student’s presentation.Some recent examples of thesis projects ex-amined at the department are[1]carried out at the depart-ment,the industrial projects[2]performed at ABB Cor-porate Research and[3]performed at Ericsson.Thesis work carried out abroad include[4,5]performed at Stan-ford University,CA.Publications from the School of Elec-trical Engineering are electronically available through the department webpage www.ee.kth.se.3.CHALLENGES AND THE ROAD TO SUCCESS The development of the master program has offered many challenges.Since the program was introduced it has been serving a student body that consists of a mix of individuals with very different cultural backgrounds and with different individ-ual needs.For example,in the2005admission round the students accepted to the program represented15nation-alities.Most students were from China,Jordan,Lebanon and Iran.In2006,a significant number of applications from Pakistan were received,reflecting the initiated co-operation between KTH and the Higher Education Com-mission(HEC)in Pakistan.In2007,the majority of the applicants originated from China and Pakistan.Many students are away from their home country for thefirst time.Since academic requirements of the program are very demanding,it is important that students quickly become acclimatized and feel support not only with aca-demic matters but also on a personal level.The student union arranges several activities in order to introduce the foreign students to KTH and to the Swedish society.The students are required to have a good knowledge of written and spoken English.It is not necessary to speak any Swedish to live in Stockholm and to follow the pro-gram.Experience has shown,however,that many students elect to learn the local language,either as a pure hobby,or as a way of integrating with the Swedish society.A perspective on our road to success of the program is described below.Integration with Swedish degree programs The master program in wireless systems is running in parallel with the Swedishfive-year degree program in electrical engi-neering(E-program,‘civilingenj¨o r’).The E-program was founded in1890and its curriculum is continuously up-dated to meet the societys requirements on the graduated engineers.Currently,the E-program hasfive specializa-tions where the twofinal years(taught in English)of the specialization in communication systems to a large extent coincide with the master program in wireless systems. Some90%of the courses in the masters program are also courses within the communications systems specialization of the E-program.The mixing of students from the two programs,in combination with many students from European Union mobility programs taking the courses, has shown to be a useful platform for the international students to quickly learn to interact with the Swedish society.Academic management The program director has a direct influence on the curriculum of the program.The philosophy at KTH,and for the wireless systems program in particular,is that the academic leadership of the program should be always available and directly involved working with the students.For example,generally the program director teaches at least one basic course in the program.This facilitates rapid,informal feedback from the students to the curriculum planning in an efficient way.Program coordinator To succeed with advanced studies in a foreign country requires solid support both on an academic and a personal level.For the wireless sys-tems program,a full-time staff member is dedicated to mentoring students both with formal academic issues (e.g.,course selections)and more practical matters.KTH provides on-campus housing for all international students. The university also offers courses in Swedish,although these cannot be counted towards the degree.The results and progress of the students is continuously monitored and reported to the academic management.Course evaluations and analyses Each course is evaluated by the students byfilling out extensive but anonymous evaluation forms.Additionally,for each course the student body appoints a student council, consisting of2-3students who represent the entire cohort. The student council meets with the instructor several times during the course to provide feedback on the course.This helps providing timely information on any problems or difficulties that the students are experiencing.This rapid feedback has proven to be extremely useful in particular for a program that consists of such a diverse student body. The students must then write a short essay with personal reflections related to some of the seminars that they have attended.The seminar course has proven to be a funda-mental way of linking theoretical knowledge taught in the program with practical applications.Additionally,the seminars also often provide opportunities for networking that are important when later seeking thesis projects or employment.Project course One of the most salient features of the pro-gram is the project course.In traditional classroom-based instruction,the students are rarely confronted with real-istic synthesis problem which for today’s electrical engi-neers often synonymous with software or hardware imple-mentation.Synthesis is an excellent way of learning[6], and one cannot cheat when implementing an algorithm: Sooner or later the resulting output shows if the imple-mentation is working correctly or not.The objective of the project course is to give the students hands-on expe-rience of project work;how to cope with the problems that occurs—technical as well as logistical and human—and training in writing documentation.Furthermore,the course gives the students the opportunity to use their theo-retical knowledge in a practical application.A group of5-7students carries out a project with the goal of producing a prototype before a certain deadline,that fulfills a given performance specification.The students are responsible for dividing the project into sub-projects,making a time table,distributing the workload,and having regular project meetings.There are of course several possible design so-lutions to the projects.During the course,the students will face many practical problems that must be solved.An ob-jective with this course is to give training in how to acquire knowledge in order to make the“correct”design decisions. An oral presentation and a demonstration will take place before the project deadline.Written documentation should be produced while working on the project.The course attracts attention also outside KTH.Typi-cally,there is one or two best group awards sponsored by industry.The deliverables from the groups also include in-ternational conference papers[7,8],as well as newspaper stories and documentary in the national television. Thesis project A unique aspect of the program is the possibility to perform the master thesis work in a com-pany.This provides a link between theoretical studies and practical applications.Also,many students who perform their thesis project in industry stay as regular employees within the same organization.Different forms offinancial support is available for the thesis project,although this is usually offered in competition.Doctoral school Many of the courses in the program are offered jointly with the national Graduate School of Telecommunications(GST)which is hosted at KTH.The GST courses are usually offered in two versions:one basic version which can be taken by master students,and an extended version tailored specifically to Ph.D.stu-dents.Taking GST courses has proven to be an excellent pathway for master students to prepare for a later career as doctoral students.Many of the master students continue towards a Ph.D.at KTH,and they act as informal mentors for new master students.TMS courses The program offers a unique possibility of taking a few classes on non-technical matters,such as project management or intellectual property rights.
