外研社英国文学史及选读(第二版)第二册教学课件Chapter 12 William Makepeac

The subtitle of the novel—A Novel Without a Hero—points to the author’s intention to portray not individuals singly but the whole of the notorious “Vanity Fair”, the English bourgeois and aristocratic society.
Selections
Vanity Fair
The Story
Vanity Fair is Thackeray’s masterpiece, taking the title from the fair in Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, where all sorts of cheats are displayed for sale. The novel presents a panorama of the society of the English uppermiddle class in the 19th century. What is more important, none of his other novels can rival it in width of social life, and in depth of social criticism.
Chapter 12 William Makepeace Thackeray
Life and Works
His delightful fairy tale, The Rose and the Ring, was published in 1855 at the same time when The Newcomes was appearing in numbers. The central character of The Newcomes was another view of Thackeray himself as a young man of good instincts which were thwarted by his own shortcomings.

In the 9th century, the Christian Anglo-Saxons were invaded by the Danes. The Danes occupied the northern part of the island. They were stopped by Alfred, King of the West Saxons from 871 till 899, who for a time united all the kingdoms of southern England. Alfred translated various works from Latin. Practically all of Old English poetry is preserved in copies made in the West Saxon dialect after the reign of Alfred.

William_Blake3-14-1 英国文学史及选读课件

• He sees a conflict between the creation of heartless, burning predator and its potential victim, the lamb.
Questions raised
• Did God create the fearsome along with the gentle, his Son along with the evil of Satan? Why does He allow the tiger to burn in the dark forest, while the lamb gambols in the glen under the stars of that very creation? Why did he allow his Son to succumb to the evil of the crucifixion while at the same time allowing him to be the light of mankind? The author leaves it up to the reader to decide. The important thing is the question, not the answer.
Blake’s poems are full of emotion and apparent presentation of his progressive democratic idea in symbolism.
He presents his view in visual images rather that abstract ideas. And his poetry was full of colors, just like sky and grass.

外研社英国文学史及选读(第二版)第一册教学课件Chapter 28 Oliver Goldsmith

His habitual extravagance and generosity kept him always in debt, no matter how much money he earned. When he had money he spent it like water. When he was without money, he borrowed. He died with the debt of a prodigious sum (for a man whose only source of income was writing) of £2,000.

and fun as essential ingredients.
It is commonly agreed, Goldsmith the novelist is greater than Goldsmith the poet, essayist and dramatist. As a novelist, he wrote only one novel The Vicar of Wakefield published in 1766. The story is told in the first-person singular by the central character of the novel, Dr Primrose, the vicar. This novel has become one of the world’s books widely read in all languages. It is his masterpiece on which his fame chiefly rests.
