I snuck a few from the kitchen before dinner and they were as delicious as always.After dinner, the real fun began - fireworks! We all bundled up in our coats and headed outside to light a bunch of firecrackers and fireworks. I loved watching the bright colors explode in the night sky. Firecrackers create such a ruckus, but that loud popping sound is a New Year tradition that's supposed to scare off evil spirits. My little cousin got a bit freaked out by all the noise though and had to go back inside. More firecrackers for me!Once the fireworks display was over, it was time for the adults to start handing out red envelopes. Getting hung bao is definitely one of the best parts of the Spring Festival! Those little red packets are always stuffed with cold hard cash from our relatives. Every kid looks forward to collecting hung bao because it's basically free money. I was really hoping for a giant stack this year, but I only got six envelopes. Hey, I'll take it - more spending money for comics, video games, and snacks!The next day was the first day of the Lunar New Year, so we had a huge breakfast with all sorts of amazing dishes like noodles, dumplings, rice cakes, and my personal favorite - zongzi.Those sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves are so delicious, especially with a cup of hot soy milk. After our big family breakfast, we started preparing for the most important Spring Festival tradition - cleaning house!Yeah, I know cleaning doesn't sound fun, but it's an absolute must during the New Year holiday. We spent the whole day sweeping, scrubbing, vacuuming, and decluttering our home from top to bottom. I didn't mind too much though because that means we're sweeping away any bad luck and misfortune from the old year to make way for incoming good luck. My grandparents are very superstitious about that stuff. We even cleaned out the refrigerator and took out all the trash to expel any lingering bad vibes or negative energy from our home. By the end of our big clean, the whole house felt refreshed and renewed - ready for an auspicious start to the new year!On the third day, my family and I visited the homes of our relatives for full-day feasting and socializing. It's a Spring Festival tradition to hang out, catch up, and of course - eat tons of delicious food! We started at my aunt's house for a huge lunch of fish, chicken, noodles, dumplings, and so many other dishes. I couldn't resist stuffing myself silly. After lunch, we visited my uncle's house for even more food and then headed to mygrandaunt's home for a third round of feasting. Visiting friends and relatives is a big part of the holiday, but all that eating can be exhausting! I needed to take a major food coma nap after our third straight banquet.A few days into the New Year holiday, my parents took us downtown to experience all the Spring Festival festivities happening in the city. The streets and alleys were decorated with beautiful red lanterns, colorful lights, intricate paper cut-outs, and intricately choreographed window displays honoring the zodiac animal of the year. Vendors lined the sidewalks selling fun holiday snacks like sugary candy rabbits, sweet rice balls, and mini egg tarts. My little brother and I never miss a chance to get our hands on some New Year's treats!We also stopped to watch some festive performances downtown like the lively lion dances, traditional dragon dances, and even an acrobatic show. Nothing gets you into the holiday spirit quite like seeing a dozen performers squirming around in a giant lion costume! I tried to capture some video on my phone but it was nearly impossible through the massive crowds of people. The streets were absolutely jam-packed with locals and tourists alike, all flocking to catch the sights and sounds of the Spring Festival.My favorite part of the day was visiting the incredible temple fair in the city center. These pop-up markets and outdoor festivals only happen once a year for the Spring Festival celebration. There were endless rows of booths and stalls selling all kinds of knick knacks, snacks, toys, clothes, and games. I spent nearly all my hung bao money on some awesome Pokemon plushies, a rubber band archery set, and basketfuls of candied hawthorn berries and chocolate-dipped bananas. My little brother went wild spending his money on carnival games and won himself an oversized teddy bear. We wandered around the bustling temple fair for hours, soaking in all the festive sights, sounds, and smells until our feet were completely sore.On the final night of the Spring Festival holiday, my family gathered again for a last hurrah celebrating the Lantern Festival. We made some small rice flour balls called tangyuan and ate them in a sweet ginger broth - a Lantern Festival tradition that symbolizes togetherness. Then we headed outside after dark and my dad helped us all make our own little lanterns out of bamboo sticks, paper, and candles. Once they were assembled, we carefully lit the candles inside the lanterns and set them afloat into the night sky, watching them flicker and sway in the breeze. It was such a magical, peaceful moment seeing all those glowing lanterns slowly ascending and scattering across the cityscape.My heart was filled with warmth and happiness as the Spring Festival holiday came to a close.Alas, like all good things, the Spring Festival Break had to end sometime. I relished those final couple days of freedom before it was back to the daily grind of homework, quizzes, and waking up at dawn for school again. But spending those two weeks immersed in delicious food, fun traditions, quality family time, and all the excitement of the Lunar New Year celebration was absolutely worth it. The Spring Festival is truly the most wonderful time of the year - a vibrant, festive celebration of life, luck, and fresh starts. I already can't wait for the holiday to roll around again next year!。
