However urban life strikes you, cities worldwide have been growing even more rapidly. Some of this growth has occurred in the developed world, but the most dramatic increase has been in the Third World.Almost all the world’s population growth over the next 30 years will take place in the cities of developing countriesBy the year 2030,for the first time in history,60 percent of the world’s people will be living in cities. This is actually good news in some ways.“Cities are the fundamental building blocks of prosperity,” says Marc Weiss, chairman of the Prague Institute for Global Urban Development,“ both for the nation and for families.” Industrial and commercial activities in urb an areas account for between 50 and 80 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP)in most countries of the world“ there’s the crazy notion that the way to deal with a city’s problems is to keep people out of them,” Weiss continued.“But the problems of the rural life are even more serious than those of the city.” For better or worse,urban-watchers are clear on one point: The quality of life for most people in the future will be determined by the quality of cities. Those cities will be bigger than ever. And yet, population numbers by themselves don’t determine a city’s prospects;after all,Addis Ababa,Ethiopia, and Hamburg,Germany, have the same population.Nor is explosive growth necessarily the determining factor.“City problems,” one authority points out,“mostly have to do with weak, ineffective, and usually unrepresentative city governments.”1.The passage mainly discusses ______________.A.Big cities.B.City life.C.Population.D.Gross Domestic Product.2.According to the passage,in the year of 2030 _______.A.there will be 21 cities having a population of more than 10 million.B.rural area will be extinct.C.most people will live in cities.D.the third world will keep abreast with the developed world.3.In the author’s opinion,_________.A.better city, better lifeB.both urban and rural areas have a larger populationC.the larger population, the faster a city developsD.both urban and rural areas have larger gross domestic products4.Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?A.The developing countries develop faster than the developed countries.B.Cities contribute more to the GDP than the villagers.C.Some problems are more easily solved in cities than in country.D.It’s impossible to solve urban problems by getting people out of cities.5.The last paragraph implies that ____________.A.public services are ineffective.B.cities are increasing too fast.C.population is not linked with development.D.government should be responsible for the problems in the cities.【参考答案】1---5、A C A A D阅读理解。

模块3U2李仕才一、阅读理解。

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Following the crowd may not always be in a person's best interest. But new research suggests that teens who get along with their friends may end up healthier as adults.Scientists have known that close friendships help boost health. That's true for both teens and adults. The finding inspired Joseph Allen,a psychologist at the University of Virginia, and his team to study whether experiences during teen years would influence adult health. So they followed 171 teens, starting when the kids were just 13.They interviewed each one every year for five years, and also spoke to these teens' closest friends, who provided additional information about the quality of their friendships. The same 171 people were interviewed again at ages 25,26 and 27.This time, the questions surveyed each person's overall health. When the researchers analyzed the data, they found a strong connection between a teen's behavior and adult health.Teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults.Whether teens held back their feelings or expressed them to close friends also influenced later health. Those who held back their feelings were more likely to be sick as adults. The connection held up even after the scientists accounted for other possible influences on health.Weight, family income and drug use were all examined. So were mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. And in these people, such other factors did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did.Getting along with the crowd may have benefits, says Allen, but there are also drawbacks.Teens who are more independent tend to do better at school and work. And peer pressure may lead some kids to engage in risky behavior, such as smoking, drinking or using drugs.Dealing with it is an ongoing challenge,Allen acknowledges.“Finding the right balance is the key.Teens shouldn't lose heart for not finding this easy.”And,he adds,“Parents need to be understanding about the pressures teens face.”1.Where can you probably read this passage?A.Science fiction.B.Health column.C.Fashion magazine.D.Entertainment newspaper.2.We can learn from Allen's study that ________.A.many other factors have a greater influence on adult health than teen friendships B.mental health issues have nothing to do with adult healthC.the same 171 teens were interviewed each year from 13 to 27D.the teens who couldn't express themselves grew up to be unhealthy3.According to what Allen said,we can know that ________.A.in order to do better at school, teens should not follow the crowdB.though it's challenging for teens to deal with peer pressure, they should not give upC.teens will engage in smoking, drinking or using drugs when facing peer pressure D.parents should understand their teens and stop them going with friends4.What can be inferred from the passage?A.There is nothing bad for teens to follow the crowd.B.Close friendships are the most important for people's health.C.Teen friendships may help teens become healthier adults.D.Adult health is only influenced by teen friendships.【解题导语】研究表明,与朋友较少或者没有朋友的青少年相比,有朋友的青少年在长大后更健康。

2020年高考英语一轮巩固达标练题Unit1Womenofachievement含解析新人教版必修3

Women of achievement李仕才***阅读理解。

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is a popular saying in the United States. It may be a common saying, but it is not scientifically confirmed. However, a new study adds to evidence that suggests taking a small amount of aspirin can help keep the doctor away.Peter Elwood is with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine in Britain. Forty years ago, he was involved in the first study to explore the effects of aspirin on the prevention of heart disease. Elwood’s team exam ined 47 studies for evidence that aspirin helped cancer patients. They found there’s fairly consistent evidence of a 15 to 20 percent reduction in death and a reduction in cancer’s spread, by low dose(剂量) aspirin. By low dose, he means 81 milligrams. The study followed cancer patients for five years. Elwood says the evidence is strong that aspirin delays death among cancer patients.Elwood’s team are excited to have this evidence from the study. Elwood adds that it is not a cure but a small sign of better things to come, what he calls a little hope and encouragement. "If you asked me personally what I would do if doctors told me I had cancer, I would say I would have no hesitation in taking it. But I do not recommend it to people. I want them to have the evidence and make their own decisions." The only major risk is that aspirin can cause stomach bleeding. But Elwood says it usually does not cause death. He adds that the evidence points to big health benefits of taking a daily aspirin. So, for some people, the pros might overweigh the cons.1. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 1?A. Patients should eat apples.B. Apples are popular with Americans.C. Aspirin can be good for health.D. Doctors should use aspirin instead of apples.2. What does Elwood suggest people do?A. The less aspirin, the better.B. Don’t delay in taking aspirin.C. Taking aspirin is a better way to cure cancer.D. Make decisions in the best interest of their own.3.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?A. Aspirin is the best cure for cancer.B. Taking aspirin won’t kill in the long run.C. Taking aspirin does more good than harm.D. The side effect of taking aspirin is strong.【语篇解读】文章介绍每天服用少量的阿司匹林对健康有好处,可以延缓癌症病人的死亡。

I saw many of our nation’s treasures, and I also saw a lot of unfortunate people like beggars and homeless folks in the streets.Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended(伸出). In a natural reaction, I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my loose change and placed it inher hand. I didn’t even look at her. I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar. But the blind woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money. I just need help finding the post office.”Immediately, I realized what I had done. An easy life makes a person forgetful.D. Be good to others all the time.3、Earthquakes are something that people fear. There are some places that have few or no earthquakes. They found that young people who often use social media are more likely to suffer from sleep disorders than those who use social media less. The researchers say doctors should ask young adults about their use of social media when treating sleep issues.“This is one of the first pieces of evidence that social media use really can influence your sleep.” said Jessica C Levenson. She was the lead author of a report on the study. The researchers set out to examine the connection between social media use and sleep among young adults.. Levenson noted that these young adults are possibly the first “generation to grow up with social media. ”The researchers wanted to find out how often young people used social media sites like Face book, Twitter, Credit and Tumbler. For the study, they gave questionnaires to nearly 1,800 adults, aged 19 to 32. On average, members of the study group used social media sites one hour a day. They also "visited various social media 30 times per week. ”Thirty percent of the study's participants reported having serious problems with sleeping. B(2015·大连高三双基测试)Any list of the greatest thinkers in history contains the name of the brilliant physicist Albert Einstein. His theories of relativity led to entirely new ways of thinking about time, space, matter, energy, and gravity.Einstein’s work led to such scientific advances as the control of atomic energy, even television as a practical application of Einstein’s work.In 1902 Einstein became an examiner in the Swiss patent office at Bern.In 1905,at 26,he published four of his five major research papers. The first one provided a theory explaining Brownian movement, the zigzag motion of microscopic particles in suspension(悬浮液).The second paper laid the foundation for the photon(光子),theory of light. In it he proposed that light is composed of separate packets of energy, called photons.A third paper contained the “special theory of relativity” which showed that time and motion are relative to the observer,if the speed of light is constant and the natural laws are the same everywhere in the universe. The fourth paper was a mathematical addition to the special theory of relativity. Here Einstein presented his famous formula,E=mc2,known as the energy mass equivalence(等价).In 1916,Einstein published his general theory of relativity in which he proposed that gravity is not a force, but a curve(曲线) in the spacetime continuum(连续体),created by the presence of mass.Einstein spoke out frequently against nationalism, the rising of one nation above all others. He opposed war and violence and supported Zionism, the movement to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine. When the Nazis came to power in 1933,they criticized his ideas. He then moved to the United States. In 1939 Einstein learned that two German chemists had split the uranium atom.Einstein wrote to President Franklin D.Roosevelt warning him that this scientific knowledge could lead to Germanydeveloping an atomic bomb.He suggested the United States begin its own atomic bomb research.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍了思想家、物理学家爱因斯坦对人类的伟大贡献及其人生阅历。
