And I particularly want to thank Assistant Secretary Kurt Campbell for driving not only this program, but so much that we have accomplished in the last four years to deepen and strengthen our relationship with China and others in the region, but particularly with China, as it is such a consequentialrelationship, one that we believe so strongly in. Ambassador Zhang, once again, welcome to the State Department. Because it is, for us, a way of making clear that our relations, government-to-government, are obviously essential. But it is those people-to-people ties that are going to determine the quality of the relationship for the future.

1My Summer Vacation AdventuresYay, summer vacation was finally here! No more waking up super early or staying late after school. For two whole months, I could just relax, play video games, and hang out with my friends without any teachers nagging me about homework. This was going to be the best summer ever! The first week, I pretty much stayed inside all day. My parents had to work, so I was home alone. I slept in until noon, played games online with my buddies, andmunched on endless bags of chips and cookies. Ahhh, this was the life! No schedules, no rules, just pure freedom. After about four days though, my mom started getting annoyed that I was just a lazy lump on the couch. She kicked me outside and said I better "get some fresh air and sunshine." Ugh, parents are such a drag sometimes. But I met up with Xiao Ming and Xiao Li from my class and we went to the park to playbasketball. Even though it was blazing hot, at least I was being "active" like my mom wanted. The second week, my parents forced me to go to summer camp. Can you believe that? The whole point of vacation is no school! But they said I needed "stimulating activities" to keep my brain from turning to mush over the break. Somehow they found this super lame day camp that taught things like coding, robotics, and academic courses. I'd rather be banging my head against a wall, to be honest. But I have to admit, the coding class was kind of interesting. We learned Python and JavaScript, and by the end of the week, I could actually build a basic website and some simple games. The robotics pit was cool too - we got to design these little robot vehicles and race them around a track. I definitely didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. After that lame-o camp was finally over, the middle of summer rolled around and my parents decided to take us on a trip. We went to Hainan Island down in the southeast for a full week. The plane ride was torturously long, but once we made it, the hotel room had a big fancy pool, a private beach, and all these fun water sports to try.The first day there, I attempted surfing, but pretty much just got pounded by waves and gulped down a ton of salt water. Not my favorite. But the next day, I tried stand-up paddle boarding which was really zen and relaxing. Just gliding along the gentle sea, looking at the beautiful scenery. My parents enjoyed doing couple's yoga on the beach in the mornings too, though I thought that looked a tad ridiculous. We also went on a boat tour around the island and got to go snorkeling at the most amazing coral reef, filled with bright tropical fish and sea turtles. I had never seen anything like it! Our guide taught us about the underwater ecosystem and how important it is to protect the oceans from pollution and overfishing. It really opened my eyes to how special and fragile marine environments are.On our last day in Hainan, my family booked one of those cheesy photo shoots where you dress up in traditional clothing and take pics for a few hours at scenic篇2Hi everyone! I'm going to tell you all about the first two units in my 8th grade English textbook. It's called "Go for It!" and it's really cool. Get ready for some awesome stories and cool words!Unit 1 is called "Making a Difference" and it's all about how people can change the world by doing good things. The first story is about this kid named Malala. She's from Pakistan and she really, really loves school. But there were some bad guys there who didn't want girls to learn. Can you believe that?! They even tried to hurt Malala just because she wanted to go to school! But Malala wasn't afraid. She kept on speaking up for girls' education. Eventually, she got very famous and won a Nobel Prize! How amazing is that? After that story, there was a cool article about these kids from Mexico who collected bottle caps. Sounds kind of weird, right? But they used the bottle caps to build a playground, a garden, and even houses! They took trash that no one wanted and turned it into something incredible. That's what "making a difference" is all about. My favorite part was learning the words and phrases related to doing good deeds. Words like "endeavor", "promote", and "contribution." I feel like such a little activist now! Maybe I'll collect bottle caps too and build my own playground. Though my mom might not be too happy about that...Okay, next up was Unit 2 - "Dealing with Misfortunes." This one was a little sadder but still really interesting. We read thisbiography about Helen Keller, who went blind and deaf when she was just a baby. Can you imagine how hard that must have been? She couldn't see, hear, or speak at all. But Helen was amazing. With the help of her teacher, she learned how to communicate and even went to university. She spent her whole life working to help others with disabilities. What an inspiration! There were also some cool articles about kids dealing with difficulties. Like this one boy who lost his home in an earthquake, but he kept going to school and studying hard so he could rebuild his life. Or the girl who used a wheelchair but still played basketball! It made me really appreciate how lucky I am to be healthy.I learned tons of great vocabulary too, like "resilience", "persevere", and "advocate." Being resilient means bouncing back from hard times, and that's exactly what these people did. No matter what challenges they faced, they persevered and never gave up. I want to be that brave and strong! My favorite activity was writing a narrative about overcoming a misfortune. I wrote a story about falling off my bike and breaking my arm (which actually happened when I was 7!). But I didn't let it get me down. I stayed positive, did myphysical therapy, and eventually healed up and could ride again. Just call me the comeback kid!Dealing with hard times is never fun, but these two units showed me that you can get through anything if you have hope, courage, and lots of perseverance. Whether you're fighting for a great cause like Malala or just trying your best after something bad happens, the most important thing is to never give up.I feel like I learned so much from these first two units of our textbook. Not just cool English words, but inspiring stories about incredible people changing the world and overcoming obstacles. They've motivated me to be a person who makes a difference too, no matter how small. Who knows, maybe one day they'll write a story about me in a textbook! An 8-year-old kid can dream, right?Well, that's all I've got. Thanks for reading my rambling book report! I give Go for It! two thumbs up. Catch you later, alligators!篇3Hi friends! Today I'm going to tell you all about what we learned in Units 1 and 2 of our 8th grade English textbook. It was really fun and interesting!Unit 1 was called "The Scots Lived Frugally". It taught us about the lifestyle and values of the Scottish people. Did you know that Scottish people are known for being thrifty and not wasteful? They believe in living simply and not spending too much money on unnecessary things. The unit had a really cool story about a girl named Jenny who went to visit her aunt Lily in Scotland during her summer vacation. Aunt Lily lived in a small cottage in the countryside. Jenny was surprised to see how differently Aunt Lily lived compared to her own family back home. Aunt Lily reused plastic bags, repaired old clothes instead of buying new ones, and even collected rainwater to use for cleaning! At first, Jenny thought Aunt Lily's way of living was strange. But as the days went by, she started to understand and appreciate the wisdom behind it. The Scottish lifestyle avoids waste and protects the environment. By the end of her stay, Jenny had learned so many valuable lessons about frugality and sustainability.Doesn't that story make you want to be more frugal too? I know it inspired me to cut down on waste and be more environmentally friendly. Simple things like carrying a reusablewater bottle, turning off lights when not in use, and donating old toys instead of throwing them away can make a big difference! Then in Unit 2, we learned about "Explorers of the Past and Present". This unit was all about daring explorations and adventures from history and modern times. We read about explorers like Christopher Columbus who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas centuries ago. Can you imagine how courage and determination it must have taken to venture into completely unknown lands and seas back then? No GPS, no modern navigation tools - just the stars to guide them!We also studied modern-day explorers like Jacques Cousteau who explored underwater environments in his famous submarine called Calypso. Cousteau made groundbreaking discoveries about marine life and filmed documentaries to educate the world. How cool is that?My favorite part was learning about the first people to reach the top of Mount Everest - the tallest mountain in the world at over 29,000 feet high! The stories of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's incredible climbing expedition gave me goosebumps. Battling extreme cold, winds, and lack of oxygen, they pushed past the limits of human endurance. Their achievement showedthat with teamwork and perseverance, even the most impossible challenges can be overcome.Doesn't reading about such brave explorers fill you with a sense of adventure and wonder? I felt so inspired to one day explore new frontiers and make amazing discoveries of my own! Maybe I'll become an astronaut and travel to outer space. Or go on an underwater expedition to uncover ancient shipwrecks. Who knows what possibilities the future holds?Learning English can open up our eyes to the wider world around us. Through these units, I got to virtually travel to different countries, learn about diverse cultures, and go on daring journeys across land and sea - all from the comfort of my classroom! I can't wait to see what other fascinating knowledge and stories await me in the upcoming units.Well, that's all I have to share about Units 1 and 2 today. Wasn't it interesting? Let me know which parts you liked the most or if you have any other thoughts篇4My Exciting Journey Learning EnglishHi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a 8th grader. I want to share with you all the fun and exciting things I've learned in my English class recently. We've been studying Units 1 and 2 from our textbook and they were awesome!Unit 1 was all about learning English words related to different careers. That was super cool because I got to learn about so many different jobs that people can have. My favorite was learning about scientists because they get to discover new things and unlock the secrets of the universe. How amazing is that?We learned words like "chemist", "biologist", "physicist" and "astronomer". I can still remember the first time I said "astronomer" out loud. It felt like such a big word rolling off my tongue. But my English teacher helped me break it down into smaller parts and practice saying it slowly. Before I knew it, I could say "astronomer" like a pro! There were also lots of fun activities we did related to careers. We had to pretend to interview each other about our dream jobs.I got to be a famous scientist being interviewed on TV. I talked all about my latest dinosaur discoveries and fossil findings. It was hilarious listening to my classmates' interviews too. Liang wantedto be a chef and he described his "world-famous noodle soup" in such great detail that my mouth was watering!Unit 2 was centered around learning how to describe different ethnic cultures and traditions. That was really fascinating because China has so many diverse ethnic groups with rich cultures. We learned words and phrases to talk about their clothing, festivals, arts, music, and more. One of the first ethnic groups we studied was the Miao people. I was amazed by the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of their traditional dress. The videos we watched showed women expertly weaving those beautiful outfits on looms. I tried my hand at drawing some of the Miao patterns in my notebook and let me tell you, it's not as easy as it looks! We also read about the Dai people and their amazing Water Splashing Festival. Imaging having a big water fight as part of your New Year celebrations! Everyone would get completely drenched from head to toe but they don't mind because it's all part of the fun. We even did a mini water splashing activity in class where we tossed little water balloons at each other. I got Jingjing good with a splash right on her head. Haha!My absolutely favorite part about Unit 2 was when we had to research an ethnic group and then give a presentation dressed intheir traditional clothing. Our class transformed into a stunning fashion show celebrating the diversity of Chinese culture. There were colorful headdresses, intricately embroidered gowns, and even some students playing traditional instruments. I was a Tibetan nomad dressed in that signature bright woolly robe. I tried to perfect walking with swagger and looking super tough, like a guy who spends his days herding animals on the vast plateaus. I think I nailed it!Through Units 1 and 2, I've gained so much new English vocabulary and learned lots of fascinating things about different careers and cultures. My reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities have really improved. English class is becoming one of my favorite subjects in school.I can't wait to see what we'll learn in the next units! Maybe we'll get to go on a field trip or have some special guests visit our class. Learning English is such an adventure. Well, I've got to run now and practice my "archaeologist" pronunciation. Catch you later, friends!篇5My Summer Vacation AdventuresHey there! I'm so excited to tell you all about my crazy summer vacation. It was full of fun, adventure, and even a little bit of trouble (but don't tell my parents!).It all started on the last day of school. The bell rang for the final time, and we all cheered and threw our books in the air. No more homework, no more tests, just two amazing months of freedom! My best friend Xiao Ming and I made a pinky promise that this would be the best summer ever. The first couple of weeks, I just relaxed at home, sleeping in late and playing video games. But pretty soon, I got bored. That's when Xiao Ming came up with his brilliant idea – we were going to have our own signature summer adventure! We decided to go camping out in the countryside. My dad gave us his old tent and some supplies. And early one morning, we set off on our bikes towards the hills outside of town. I had a backpack full of snacks, comics, and my portable gaming system. What could go wrong?Well, a lot actually. After riding for a few hours, we got lost. The narrow path we were following seemed to just disappear into the bushes. We rode around in circles for what felt like forever under the hot sun. I was getting tired, hungry, and basically regretting this whole idea.Just when I thought we'd never find our way, I heard a voice calling out. It was a local farmer out tending to his fields. Using my basic country dialect skills, I was able to explain our situation and ask for directions. The farmer smiled and pointed the way through a small opening in the brush that we had completely missed. He also gathered some fresh vegetables from his fields and gave them to us. I tried to pay him, but he wouldn't accept any money, saying it was a gift. Such nice people out here in the countryside! Finally, we reached the perfect camping spot – a grassy meadow surrounded by trees, with a small stream running nearby. We quickly set up the tent, had a simple dinner of bread and the farmer's veggies, and settled in for the night, watching the stars come out. That's when the real adventure began. I was asleep when I heard Xiao Ming screaming bloody murder. I unzipped the tent to see him doing a crazy dance, swatting at what looked like a family of raccoons! They must have smelled our food and came sniffing around.Xiao Ming had gone outside to use the bathroom when the raccoons attacked, trying to get at our snack stash. I quickly grabbed a big stick and tried shooing them away, but those littleguys put up a fight! We were yelling and jumping around, making all kinds of noise.Suddenly, the biggest raccoon turned towards me, baring his teeth. I froze in fear as he started coming at me. Just then, I heard Xiao Ming again – he had grabbed a pot and was banging it loudly right next to the raccoon's ear! The sound was deafening and finally scared it off, along with the rest of its family. We collapsed on the ground, out of breath but laughing hysterically. Best raccoon battle ever! We cleaned up the mess they made, secure in knowing those bandits wouldn't be back tonight. We spent the rest of the night watching the campfire and roasting marshmallows. Xiao Ming even told a spooky story about a camp curse that had me looking over my shoulder all night. The next morning, we packed up our gear and headed back home. Our little camping trip was definitely an adventure that we'll never forget. Sure, we got a bit dirty, scrapped up our knees, and battled some raccoons. But we had the greatest time just being out in nature, away from our usual routines. When we got back to town, my mom could immediately tell we had mischievous looks on our faces. I'll admit, weexaggerated the raccoon battle story just a bit to make it sound even more epic. Still, she was proud of us for going out on our own little adventure. As long as we were safe, she didn't mind us getting into a bit of trouble out there. That was just the beginning of my summer escapades. There was the time Xiao Ming and I tried fishing in the river, only to get our lines hopelessly tangled together. Or when we snuck into the local swimming hole for a night swim, and I completely underestimated how cold that water would be! Xiao Ming claims he saw something mysterious in the depths that night, but I'm pretty sure he was just trying to spook me again. No matter what kind of silly situations we got ourselves into, Xiao Ming and I had a total blast just being kids and going on adventures together. We used our imaginations to keep ourselves entertained, not worrying about screens or technology for once. Don't get me wrong, I love my video games. But there's something so fun about running around outdoors, exploring new places, and seeing what kind of mischief you can stir up!Before I knew it, summer was coming to an end. Soon it would be time to put away my adventure gear – the backpack, flashlight, and bugspray – and get ready to hit the books again. I'll miss those lazy days of riding bikes wherever we wanted, having water balloon fights, and staying up late watching the stars and telling stories. But you know what? That just means I have to start dreaming up ideas for next summer's adventures! Maybe Xiao Ming and I will finally build that epic treehouse we've always talked about. Or go on a proper hiking trip and really rough it out in the wilderness (though I'll pack extra snacks in case we run into more raccoons!). The options are endless when you've got a fearless partner in crime by your side.I know I'll probably get in trouble here and there, track some mud into the house, or give my parents a few minor heart attacks with my misadventures. But isn't that what being a kid is all about? Getting out there, having fun, and making crazy memories before we have to become respectable adults? I, for one, am going to soak up every second of adventure and freedom I can before that happens! So here's to the rest of summer, and dreaming up my next big escapade. Who's ready to join me? Just watch out for those raccoons!篇6My Amazing Summer Vacation!Hey there! Let me tell you all about my super awesome summer vacation. It was the best one ever! I had so much fun and did a bunch of really cool things.First off, my family went on an amazing trip to Yunnan Province in southwestern China. We flew there from Shanghai and I was so excited because I had never been that far away before. The plane ride took a few hours but it was still lots of fun looking out the window at the clouds and everything below us getting smaller and smaller. When we got to Yunnan, the first stop was the capital city Kunming. That place was really pretty with lots of old buildings and trees and flowers everywhere. We visited the Yuantong Temple which has been there for over 1,200 years! Can you believe a temple that old is still standing? It was huge with these colorful murals on the walls and giant Buddha statues. My little brother got scared of one of the fierce-looking Buddha faces, haha! After Kunming, we drove out to Dali which is a small town right by the beautiful Erhai Lake. The water there is so clear and blue. We went on a boat tour around the lake and I saw cormorant fishermen who use birds to catch fish for them. It was really cool to see that ancient fishing method up close. We alsohiked up to the Three Pagodas which are these old towers from over 800 years ago during the Nanzhao Kingdom era. You can climb up inside them and the views from the top were just breathtaking looking over Erhai Lake and the Cangshan Mountains in the distance. My favorite part was when we visited Lijiang though. That city is in the northwestern part of Yunnan up in the Himalayas and it has the most amazing old town with little alleyways and canals. Everything looks like it's from hundreds of years ago! We stayed at a really nice hotel built in the traditional Naxi ethnic minority architectural style with those cool upturned roof eaves. From our hotel, we could see the iconic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain which had snow on the peaks even though it was summer down below. So pretty! In Lijiang, we wandered around the ancient streets shopping for souvenirs and trying delicious local foods like baba flatbread, awesome! There were music and dance performances happening all the time too which was entertaining. One night we even went to see a movie projected on the side of an old courtyard home which was a unique experience. But I think the highlight was when we took a hiking trip up into the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain park itself. We rode up part of the way on one of thoseopen-air sightseeing buses and then hiked along a trail through the pine forests. The fresh mountain air was so crisp and refreshing. At the end, we got to see chinquapin nut trees and wild mountain flowers and even some adorable pikas (they're like tiny rabbits)! It was magical being up in those beautiful mountains. After the awesomeness of Yunnan, we headed back to Shanghai. But the vacation fun wasn't over yet! My parents signed me up for a really neat summer camp program. It was an English immersion camp where we had to speak only English all day long. It was definitely challenging at first since my English isn't perfect, but it ended up being so valuable for improving my skills. We did all kinds of fun activities and games aimed at building vocabulary, grammar, writing, reading comprehension, and conversational abilities. There were classes but also playtime, sports, talent shows, field trips and more - all while constantly being surrounded by English. My favorite part of the camp was probably the science experiments we did. We made little volcanos with baking soda and vinegar. We built circuits with batteries and lightbulbs. We even dissected a frog (sorry Mr. Froggy)! It was all such a cool way to learn. I made a bunch of new friends from all around too, including some students who came all the way from the USA and UK for the camp. Now I can understand songs and movies and books in English way better. I'm really glad I got to have that immersive experience.Other than the Yunnan trip and English camp, I stayed pretty busy over summer break doing other fun stuff. I read a whole stack of books - my favorites were the last few Harry Potter novels because I'm a huge Potterhead! I drew and painted a lot, entering some of my artworks into a local competition (didn't win anything though). My grandparents came to stay with us for a few weeks which was nice to spend time with them. And of course I played a ton of video games and went swimming at the pool a lot with my buddies to beat the heat. All in all, it was just an amazing couple of months off from school filled with adventures, learning, and making awesome memories!Well, that's the full scoop on my summer vacation escapades. Pretty incredible, right? I feel so lucky and blessed that I got to go on such an epic journey to Yunnan and have that awesome English camp experience. Those were definitely the highlights.I'm a little sad that break is over and I have to go back to school again. But I'm also excited to see my friends and teachers and keep progressing with my studies. 8th grade, here I come! I justhope I don't have too much homework yet so I can keep riding high on the fun summer vibes for a little while longer. Catch you later!。

LIVING HISTORY____ Hillary 整理稿第二部(十七)

LIVING HISTORY____ Hillary 整理稿第二部(十七)CD2-17They came up laughing and swam back to the boat for another jump.Chelsea said, “Come on, Mom, try it!”Of course, Ted and Bill started yelling, “Yeah, give it a try―give it a try!” For reasonsthat escape me to this day, I said okay. I am not all that athletic anymore, but thenext thing I knew I was following Caroline and Chelsea up a narrow little ladder to get tothe top. By now I was thinking, “How did I get myself into this?”As soon as Carolineand Chelsea reached the platform-boom! Off they went again. Now perched up therealone, looking down at the tiny figures below me treading water, I listened to their shouts, “Come on, come on! Jump!”Then I heard Jackie’s voice rising above the rest: “Don’t do it, Hillary! Don’t let themtalk you into it. Don’t do it!”I thought to myself, “Now there is the voice of reason and experience.”She knew exactlywhat was going through my mind, and she came to my rescue.“You know, you’re right!” I shouted back.Slowly I climbed down with as much dignity as I could summon. Then I got into thewater and went for a swim with my friend Jackie.THE DELIVERY ROOMWhen we returned to Washington a week before Labor Day,it was time for the White House to focus fulltimeon the health care initiative. Or so I hoped. But By late August, Treasure Secretary Lloyd Bentsen, Secretary of StateWarrenChristopher and economic adviser Bob Rubin were adamant about postponing healthcare reform and moving forward with the North American Free Trade Agreement, knownas NAFTA.It was Bill’s decision, and he concluded that NAFTA had to be addressed first.Once again, health care would have to wait.By early September, Bill was also focused on preparations for the upcoming visit ofIsraeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and the signingof a new Middle East peace accord. The historic meeting that took place on the White House South Lawn on September 13, 1993, was the result of months of negotiations inOslo, Norway.I had first met Yitzhak and Leah Rabin earlier that spring when they paid a courtesycall at the White House. Both Yitzhak and Leah were realisticabout the challenges that lay ahead for Israel. They believed they had no choice but totry to achieve a secure future for their nation through negotiations with their sworn enemies. On that auspicious day, Bill persuaded Yitzhak to shake hands with Arafat as a tangiblesign of their commitment to the peace plan. Rabin agreed, as long as there would beno kissing, a common Arab custom. Before the ceremony, Bill and Yitzhak engaged in ahilarious rehearsal of the handshake, with Bill pretending to be Arafat as they practiced acomplicated maneuver that would prevent the Palestinian leader from drawing too close.Even as he worked on these varied and pressing issues, Bill scheduled a televisedprime-time address to Congress on September 22 to outline the health care plan.Bill gave a great speech, with just the right mix of passion, wisdom and substance. He held up a red, white and blue “healthsecurity card”that he hoped would be issued to every American, vowing to deliver a planthat wouldguarantee every citizen health insurance coverage and access to affordable, quality medical care. After the speech we loaded up the motorcade and headed back to the White House. We decided to go first to theOld Executive Office Building, where the health care staff worked in crowded, makeshiftcubicles in room 160. Bill and I thanked them for spending days and nights working forreform. I stood on a chair and declared to laughter and applause that with the impendingbirth of the health care bill, the room would now be renamed “the Delivery Room.”But any presidential agenda issubject to outside events. Bill was en route to California on October 3 when his aides receivedan urgent call from the White House Situation Room. Two Black Hawk helicoptershad been shot down in Somalia. The news got worse: The body of an Americanserviceman had been dragged through the streets of Mogadishu。

Materials for Extensive Reading: No.4'It Takes A Village....'By Hillary Rodham ClintonI write these words looking out through the windows in the White House at the city of Washington in all its beauty and squalor, promise and despair. In the shadow of great power, so many feel powerless. These contradictions color my feelings when I think about my own child and all our children. My worry for these children has increased, but remarkably, so has my hope for their future.REASONS FOR OPTIMISMWe know much more now than we did even a few years ago about how the human brain develops and what children need from their environments to develop character, empathy, and intelligence. When we put this knowledge into practice, the results are astonishing. Also, because when I read, travel, and talk with people around the world, it is increasingly clear to me that nearly every problem children face today has been solved somewhere, by someone. And finally, because I sense a new willingness on the part of many parents and citizens to turn down the decibel level on our political conflicts and start paying attention to what works. There's an old saying I love: You can't roll up your sleeves and get to work if you're still wringing your hands. So if you, like me, are worrying about our kids; if you, like me, have wondered how we can match our actions to our words, I'd like to share with you some of the convictions I've developed over a lifetime--not only as an advocate and a citizen but as a mother, daughter, sister, and wife--about what our children need from us and what we owe to them."IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD"I chose that old African proverb to title my book because it offers a timeless reminder that children will thrive only if their families thrive and if the whole of society cares enough to provide for them. The sage who first offered that proverb would undoubtedly be bewildered by what constitutes the modern village. In earlier times and places--and until recently in our own culture--the "village" meant an actual geographic place where individuals and families lived and worked together. For most of us, though, the village doesn't look like that anymore. In fact, it's difficult to paint a picture of the modern village, so frantic and fragmented has much of our culture become. Extended families rarely live in the same town, let alone the same house. In many communities, crime and fear keep us behind locked doors. Where we used to chat with neighbors on stoops and porches, now we watch videos in our darkened living rooms. Instead of strolling down Main Street, we spend hours in automobiles and at anonymous shopping malls. We don't join civic associations, churches, union, political parties, or even bowling leagues the way we used to.WE CAN'T TURN AWAY FROM THIS BRAVE NEW WORLD The horizons of the contemporary village extend well beyond the town line. From the moment we are born, we are exposed to vast numbers of other people and influences through the media. Technology connects us to the impersonal global village it has created. To many, this brave new world seems dehumanizing and inhospitable. It is not surprising, then,, that there is a yearning for the "good old days" as a refuge from the problems of the present. But by turning away, we blind ourselves to the continuing, evolving presence of the village in our lives, and its critical importance for how we live together. The village can no longer be defined as a place on a map, or as a list of people or organizations, but its essence remains the same: it is the network of values and relationships that support and affect our lives.NEW WAYS OF COMING TOGETHEROne of the honors of being First Lady is the opportunity I have to go out into the world and to see what individuals and communities are doing to help themselves and their children. I have had the privilege of talking with mothers, fathers, grandparents, civic clubs, Scout troops, PTAs, and church groups. From these many conversations, I know Americans everywhere are searching for--and often finding--new ways to support one another.Even our technology offers us new ways of coming together, through radio talk shows, e-mail and the Internet. The networks of relationships we form and depend on are our modern-day villages, but they reach well beyond the city limits. Many of them necessarily involve the whole nation. They are the basis for our "civil society," a term social scientists use to describe the way we work together for common purposes. Whether we harness their potential for the greater good or allow ourselves to drift into alienation and divisiveness depends on the choices we make now.CREATING CONSENSUS, RESISTING EXTREMIST RHETORICWe cannot move forward by looking to the past for easy olutions. Even if a golden age had existed, we could not simply graft it onto today's busier, more impersonal and complicated world. Instead, our challenge is to arrive at a consensus of values and a common vision of what we can do, individually and collectively, to build strong families and communities. Creating that consensus in a democracy depends on seriously considering other points of view, resisting the lure of extremist rhetoric, and balancing individual rights and freedoms with personal responsibility and mutual obligations.THE TRUE TEST...of the consensus we build is how well we care for our children. For a child, the village must remain personal. Talking to a baby while changing a diaper, playing airplane to entice a toddler to accept a spoonful of food, tossing a ball back and forth with ateenager, are tasks that cannot be carried out in cyberspace. They require the presence of caring adults who are dedicated to children's growth, nurturing, and well-being. What we do to participate in and support that network--from the way we care for our own children to the jobs we do, the causes we join, and the kinds of legislation we support--is mirrored every day in the experiences of America's children. We can read our national character most plainly in the result.MORALITY, AND SELF-INTEREST, AT STAKEHow we care for our own and other people's children isn't only a question of morality; our self-interest is at stake too. No family is immune to the influences of the larger society. No matter what my husband and I do to protect and prepare Chelsea, her future will be affected by how other children are being raised. I don't want her to grow up in an America sharply divided by income, race, or religion. I'd like to minimize the odds of her suffering at the hands of someone who didn't have enough love or discipline, opportunity or responsibility, as a child. I want her to believe, as her father and I did, that the American Dream is within reach of anyone willing to work hard and take responsibility. I want her to live in an America that is still strong and promising to its own citizens and lives up to its image throughout the world as a land of hope and opportunity.THIS, THEN, IS AN INVITATION TO A JOURNEY...we can take together, as parents and as citizens of this country, united in the belief that children are what matter--more than the size of our bank accounts or the kinds of cars we drive.
