I loved learning about the rituals of tribal societies, like the intricate dances and masks they made for ceremonial occasions. Whenever my classes covered a new civilization or region, whether it was ancient Egypt, medieval Europe, or modern day Asia, I was always the most engaged student, hungrily soaking in every fact.In my mind's eye, I could envision myself being warmly welcomed into a remote village, getting to observe their daily lives and participate in their traditions firsthand. I'd learn their language, hear their stories passed down through generations, experience things no outsider ever had before. And in exchange, I would regale them with tales of my own culture and all the places I'd traveled. It would be an exchange of cultures and knowledge unlike anything the world had seen.My parents always pushed me to set more "realistic" goals, like becoming a doctor, lawyer, or businessman. And while those careers seemed perfectly respectable to me, they just didn't inspire the same sense of passion and wonder. It seemed there were fewer and fewer blank spaces left to fill in on the map.But even as the dream of discovering new lands faded, the spirit of exploration itself never left me.
