We were struck by the energy and enthusiasm with which China’s leaders were forging ahead with a new and ambitious future for the Chinese people; and I well recall our discussions with the late paramount leader Mr. Deng Xiaoping, who was foremost among these leaders in setting a clear direction for China with his policy of reform. It was also Mr. Deng’s visionary concept of One Country Two Systems which opened the way for the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty under the Sino-British Joint Declaration.Almost thirty years later, Mr Deng’s vision has borne remarkable fruit. Rapid economic growth and development has transformed the lives of people across China and lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty: a huge and historic achievement with far reaching positive effects on people’s lives.I was delighted that my grandson Prince William was able to witness these changes during his first visit to China earlier this year. Like myself and Prince Philip, he visited not only your great cities of Beijing and Shanghai but also the beautiful province of Yunnan, and saw at first-hand the strong connections which bind our two countries together, be they in culture, education or business.Mr. President, the relationship between the United Kingdom and China is now truly a global partnership. We have much reason to celebrate the dynamic, growing economic relationship between our countries as well as our success in working together to address pressing international challenges.We have, this year, marked the seventieth anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations. Today the world faces challenges which call for collaboration between the nations: conflict and terrorism; poverty and ill-health; conservation and climate change. As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, Britain and China are stewards of the rules-based international system, and we have a responsibility to cooperate on these issues which have a direct bearing on the security and prosperity of all our peoples.This global partnership is supported by an expanding network of links between the people of our two countries, which are essential in building mutual understanding and friendship, while we welcome the increasing numbers of Chinese tourists, students and business visitors to the United Kingdom.Mr. President, your visit is a defining moment in this very special year for our bilateral relationship. Everymonth this year we commemorate either the centenary of a momentous event in the FirstWorld War; the 70th anniversary of a milestone at the end of the Second World War; or, herein Germany, 25 years of reunification following the fall of the wall which divided this city andthis nation for so long.But, tonight, I would also like to cast back rather further in time. Last week in a water-meadow by the River Thames, I attended an event to celebrate the 800th anniversary of theMagna Carta. Of course, in common with other events in our remote history, the precise factsof 1215 are disputed. The consequences of the agreement between King John and his barons,however, are not disputed: for the first time we established in England that no man should beabove the law and that individuals as well as rulers have rights. Thus began the long, slow andinterrupted process of our country's evolution into a democracy.Tomorrow I shall visit St Paul's Church, where the first freely-elected legislature in Germanymet in 1848. The FrankfurtParliament turned out to be a false dawn; it took another centuryand the loss of the most terrible wars in history to set Germany on the path of democracy.Earlier this year my cousins visited Germany to mark with you, Mr President, more recent andpainful anniversaries. The Duke of Kent visited Dresden and The Duke of Gloucester visitedBergen-Belsen. I myself shall visit Bergen-Belsen on Friday. These visits underline the completereconciliation between our countries.Germany has reconciled with all her neighbours. I pay tribute to the work of the Germanstatesmen since the Second World War who reinvented Germany and helped to rebuild Europe.I met Chancellor Adenauer at Windsor in 1958. He rejected the idea of a neutral Germany,preferring to anchor Germany in the West. His successors took up the challenge of unitingGermany as a member of all the institutions of Europe and the West.Since 1945 the United Kingdom has determined to number among Germany's very strongestfriends in Europe. In the intervening decades, Britain and Germany have achieved so much byworking together. I have every confidence that we will continue to do so in the years ahead.Since Berlin and Germany were reunited there has been much to celebrate. Today I cruisedwith you, Mr President, along the Spree. I saw fewer cranes than when I was last here in 2019.But still the most magnificent element of Berlin's skyline is the Reichstag dome, an enduringreminder of our cultural cooperation. Our work together includes every part of life, frompolitics to commerce, from industry to every aspect of the arts, in particular, music,museums and education.We also saw a wonderful example of partnership in education and science during our visit to theTechnical Universitythis afternoon. The enthusiasm and interest our students and youngpeople have for each other's ideas and work is our greatest asset: the next generation is at easewith itself and with contemporaries across Europe in a way that was never the case before.The United Kingdom has always been closely involved in its continent. Even when our mainfocus was elsewhere in the world, our people played a key part in Europe. In the nineteenthcentury in the Russian Empire a Welsh engineer called John Hughes founded a mining townwhich is now Donetsk in Ukraine. The Queen’s Christmas Broadcast 202024 December 2020Every year we herald the coming of Christmas by turning on t he lights. And light does more than create a festive mood –li ght brings hope.For Christians, Jesus is ‘the light of the world’, but we can’t ce lebrate his birth today in quite the usual way. People of all fai ths have been unable to gather as they would wish for their f estivals, such as Passover, Easter, Eid, and Vaisakhi. But we ne ed life to go on. Last month, fireworks lit up the sky around Windsor, as Hindus, Sikhs and Jains celebrated Diwali, the festi val of lights, providing joyous moments of hope and unity –d espite social distancing.Remarkably, a year that has necessarily kept people apart has, in many ways, brought us closer. Across the Commonwealth, my family and I have been inspired by stories of people volun teering in their communities, helping those in need.In the United Kingdom and around the world, people have ris en magnificently to the challenges of the year, and I am so p roud and moved by this quiet, indomitable spirit. To our youn g people in particular I say thank you for the part you have p layed.This year, we celebrated International Nurses’ Day, on the 200t h anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. As with oth er nursing pioneers like Mary Seacole, Florence Nightingale sh one a lamp of hope across the world. Today, our front-line se rvices still shine that lamp for us –supported by the amazing achievements of modern science –and we owe them a debt of gratitude. We continue to be inspired by the kindness of strangers and draw comfort that –even on the darkest nights –there is hope in the new dawn.Jesus touched on this with the parable of the Good Samaritan. The man who is robbed and left at the roadside is saved by someone who did not share his religion or culture. This won derful story of kindness is still as relevant today. Good Samarit ans have emerged across society showing care and respect for all, regardless of gender, race or background, reminding us t hat each one of us is special and equal in the eyes of God. The teachings of Christ have served as my inner light, as has the sense of purpose we can find in coming together to wors hip.In November, we commemorated another hero –though nobo dy knows his name. The Tomb of the Unknown Warrior isn’t a large memorial, but everyone entering Westminster Abbey has to walk around his resting place, honouring this unnamed c ombatant of the First World War –a symbol of [the] selfless duty and ultimate sacrifice. The Unknown Warrior was not exc eptional. That’s the point. He represents millions like him who throughout our history have put the lives of others above thei r own, and will be doing so today. For me, this is a source of enduring hope in difficult and unpredictable times.Of course, for many, this time of year will be tinged with sad ness: some mourning the loss of those dear to them, and oth ers missing friends and family-members distanced for safety, w hen all they’d really want for Christmas is a simple hug or a s queeze of the hand. If you are among them, you are not alon e, and let me assure you of my thoughts and prayers.The Bible tells how a star appeared in the sky, its light guidin g the shepherds and wise men to the scene of Jesus’s birth. We also remember those who through doing their duty cannot be athome for Christmas, such as workers in essential or emergency services.And especially at this time of year we think of the men and women serving overseas in ourarmed forces. Had the fortunes of war gone against us, how very differently events in Britain and Europe would have unfolded?Earlier in the year, we marked another event of the first importance in our history C the 300th anniversary of what is popularly known as the Glorious Revolution.The invitation to King William and Queen Mary to accept the thrones of England and Scotland finally laid to rest the “enterprise of England” which Philip of Spain set in hand.It thus gave the particular direction to our history, which was to lead to the development of parliamentary democracy and the tradition of political and religious toleration which Britain enjoys today.It was a great pleasure for us to celebrate that event in the pany of the Crown Prince of the Netherlands. Together we visited Torbay C which was where King William landed in 1688.It was shrouded with fog when we were there, but we did manage to see through the mist some of the hundreds of British and Dutch yachts that had assembled there.Three hundred years may seem a long time ago, but there are still some objects here in Buckingham Palace which bring to life William and Mary as people C and one which I particularly treasure is this little patch box that belonged to The Queen and which caries her monogram entwined with William’s on the lid.The 1988 anniversary season opened in Australia C with a grand party on Australia Day to mark the country’s 200th birthday. It was a party which went on for most of the year, but Prince Philip and I joined in the festivities in April and May.Like so many visitors in Bicentennial year, we brought home some souvenirs of our visit. In our case, it was some delightful early prints of Sydney, which served to remind us of the extraordinary developments which have taken place in Australia in the short space of two hundred years.Contrast this scene of Sydney Harbour with the pictures we all saw of the crowded waters around the Opera House and the famous bridge in January this year.Centenaries may seem rather arbitrary occasions, but they nonetheless prompt us to look back into the past. When we do so, we can draw hope from seeing how ancient enmities have vanished; and how new nations have grown and established themselves in vigour and wisdom.Equally, they make us reflect on injustices and tragedies and inspire us to do our best to learn from these as well.To do that, we surely should draw inspiration from one otheranniversary C the one we celebrate every year at this time, the birth of Christ.There are many grand and splendid pictures in the Royal Collection that illustrate this event, but one which gives me particular pleasure is this precious, almost jewel-like book.It is a “Book of Hours”, full of prayers and devotional readings. It’s in Latin, but it contains the most exquisite illuminations and it is these that speak to us most movingly.The anonymous person who drew the pictures nearly five hundred years ago has included all the familiar elements of the Christmas story which we hear with such pleasure every year.Here are the angels, bringing the glad tidings to the shepherds, who listen attentively. Down here, where baby Jesus lies in the stall, you can see Mary and Joseph, watching over him, quite unmoved, it seems, by the man playing the bagpipes overhead.The star over the stable has lit the way for all of us ever since and there should be no one who feels shut out from that weling and guiding light. The legends of Christmas about the ox and the ass suggest that even the animals are not outside that loving care.Recently, many of you will have set up and decorated a Christmas tree in your homes. Often these are put by a window and the bright and shining tree is there for every passer-by to see and share. Yet it was China’s desire to shape a new future which captivated us the most. We were struck by the energy and enthusiasm with which China’s leaders were forging ahead with a new and ambitious future for the Chinese people; and I well recall our discussions with the late paramount leader Mr. Deng Xiaoping, who was foremost among these leaders in setting a clear direction for China with his policy of reform. It was also Mr. Deng’s visionary concept of One Country Two Systems which opened the way for the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty under the Sino-British Joint Declaration.中国塑造崭新未来的愿望，留给我们的印象最为深刻。

Almost thirty years later, Mr Deng’s vision has borne remarkable fruit. Rapid economic growth and development has transformed the lives of people across China and lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty: a huge and historic achievement with far reaching positive effects on people’s lives.将近三十年后，邓先生的愿景已取得了丰硕的成果。

I was delighted that my grandson Prince William was able to witness these changes during his first visit to China earlier this year. We have, this year, marked the seventieth anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations. Today the world faces challenges which call for collaboration between the nations: conflict and terrorism; poverty and ill-health; conservation and climate change. As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, Britain and China are stewards of the rules-based international system, and we have a responsibility to cooperate on these issues which have a direct bearing on the security and prosperity of all our peoples.今年是联合国成立七十周年。
