奥尔巴赫的巨著《摹仿论》谈到荷马史诗与《旧约》故事在文体上的差异。
他说荷马的叙述完整而周到,各种事件都发生在前景,连接紧密,表述从容,什么都不隐瞒;《旧约》故事则朝着一个目标发展,只突出对人物行动有用的部分,其余则任其模糊不清。
这跟两者所描写的人物的身份有关:荷马写的是上层社会的生活,《旧约》的对象则不分阶级。
这不正是《红楼梦》与《水浒传》在写法上的区别吗?《红楼梦》像荷马史诗,事无巨细,皆刻画无遗,工笔细描,笔笔都勾连开去;《水浒传》像《旧约》故事,删繁就简,一气呵成,朝一个目标进发,只突出聚光灯下的行动,其余都模糊成背景。
这是因为两者所反映的社会生活形态有显著不同。
大观园是岁月静好,现世安稳,作者乃耽于文字的声色,讲究细节的丰缛与感官的华美;而梁山泊则险象环生,杀机四伏,说话人线条比较粗放,常有“说时迟,那时快”的强烈动感。
举两个例子说明。
《水浒传》写端王赵佶赴驸马王诜的府上宴饮,《红楼梦》写贾宝玉到冯紫英家中饮宴,都涉及皇亲国戚,都是宴饮时上洗手间,也都有赠人礼物的事,正好可以对参。
《红楼梦》里,宝玉出席解手,蒋玉菡随了出来。
宝玉见蒋玉菡妩媚温柔,心中十分留恋,问他戏班中有一个叫琪官的在哪,可惜无缘得见。
蒋玉菡笑道,就是我的小名儿。
宝玉连称幸会——将一个玉玦扇坠解下来,递与琪官……琪官接了,笑道:“……我这里得了一件奇物,今日早起方系上,还是簇新的,聊可表我一点亲热之意。
”说毕撩衣,将系小衣儿一条大红汗巾子解了下来,递与宝玉,道:“这汗巾子是茜香国女国王所贡之物,夏天系着,肌肤生香,不生汗渍。
昨日北静王给我的,今日才上身。
若是别人,我断不肯相赠。
二爷请把自己系的解下来,给我系着。
”宝玉听说,喜不自禁,连忙接了,将自己一条松花汗巾解了下来,递与琪官。
《红楼梦》里的礼物,从来就没有简简单单送出去和收进来的,比如这两条汗巾。

以祭社为例,自先秦至明清,祭社活动一直是村落重要的集体活动,它所折射的是农民对土地神的祈望和诉求,是维系村民情感的精神纽带。
先秦时期,人们使“唯为社事,单出里;唯为社田,国人毕作”。
战国以降,这一传统相沿不衰,汉代村落之祭社便是举家而动,杀猪宰羊祭祀社神,然后分享祭肉,歌娱宴饮。
